I remember when this came out originally. It created quite a splash. Very 1968 and 'transgressive' in the day. I'm not sure but this may have been one of the only recordings at the time to feature a Beethoven symphony on solo piano. I think Gould at some point said that he was not that fond of the Beethoven symphonies except for maybe the piano versions (!).

Beethoven's grand pupil did a very great job on his symphonies for the piano.

It's hilarious that he only played this because he thought it was a ridiculous transcription, and wanted to make a statement about it with his recording of it. His transcription of Ravel's La Valse for solo piano was apparently also meant to be a parody of these kinds of transcriptions from the 19th century. Yet both performances are quite compelling, maybe undermining the very point he was trying to make.

He's so ingenious even pieces he hates he makes a compelling case for it. He thought the 5th symphony was very overrated, his favorite being the 8th. I don't think he hated the transcription, he simply said Liszt made an overly faithful transcription.

Héctor Melicoff - That is a fascinating anecdote - he was an unusual character and apparently he had a rather troublesome time with dystonia - he is in my opinion the most trusted pianist with the music of Bach.

I laugh very hard when I hear someone say that Glenn Gould couldn't play romantic repertoire because he lacked the right technique to play it.
@platypusguy4 жыл бұрын
I've never heard anyone with any musical formation say that.

Gould had the ability/technique to play any keyboard (harpsichord/piano) repertoire. He just didn’t want to. Gould is well known for not liking or showing little interest for much of classical music. His distaste for the latter Mozart works is well known. He trashed Stravinsky as a fraud. He is silent about many famous composers. In the end he was mostly a Bach specialist by choice. Which is fine but I don’t put much value in his opinion about the broad range of classical music.
