I absolutely adore this version of the Bach keyboard toccatas by GG! I have to admit that I like it even more than both books of the WTC played by GG (even though that’s obviously also a glorious version)... for those who want to look up all the fugues, here are the track times for that: 5:24, 9:20, 16:58, 19:08, 34:30, 42:01, 50:24, 1:00:30, 1:07:55, 1:18:06

Good work sir re. the fugue times. I must confess that on my Bach journey to date I’ve largely bypassed the Toccatas. Beginning to think, having now listened to this recording through a couple of times that it’s really something I ought to remedy sooner rather than later. Gould was, and is, to my ear at least, untouchable when it comes to his Bach recordings. There is no one else I would personally prefer to hear play the master. I am though always listening to others interpretations with fascination. Played well, you can’t really go wrong with his music though can you? But to hear Bach play himself....

It interesting that no matter what one’s position in life, artistic field, JS Back reigns supreme around the world, there’s just something about his work that connect us together, that transcends languages and culture, inspires each artist to add their unique touches when playing…in my opinion, but what’s most people who listens to Bach, may not realize, he created these masterpieces before the piano was invented, for the harpsichord and organ, timeless, people will be listening to his works long after we are gone, like previous generations….Peace !

Late last night I fell asleep listening to KZbin cycling thru its many offerings of Bach's Art of The Fugue's innumerable renditions. Somehow I opened my eyes as Glenn was playing it alternately on piano and organ (an entire album of his I never heard of). I was left sleepless for about an hour or so thinking how this man was able to not just make the organ sound like that, but how fresh and distinctively enjoyable he made that monumental work sound. When I hear Bach everything falls into place, when I hear Glenn it all fits perfectly.

Bach composed the toccatas very young, right after his return from a trip to hear Buxtehude playing. He missed an entire month of class in that trip. His works before this event were rather poor. I guess he truly had a vision and found his musical identity during those days, because after this he just picks up in quality and doesn't drop the ball ever again.

A future stop has to be Netherlands Bach society All of Bach series. I watched the B minor mass last night and the little documentary with musician interviews. They describe much the same ethos, trying to get clarity, and cinematic pans and close-ups. Interestingly, GG spoke in similar terms. The conductor of this also spoke of landscapes, and it is amazing his interpretation conveyed some of what they were saying in the interviews. For example of using musicians (very much like Gould actually) who had their own strong opinions and personalities. I remember Lenny Bernstein saying that about Gould, that it was always an adventure to work with such a great genius who had his own ideas sometimes in conflict with the conductor even. But Jos seems to balance all these performers somehow, and they all seem to love him.

But I knew that he had more in mind, but for years she said "Oh noo, no way he is just a friend". One day out of nowhere she treated me as a total stranger and i believe i must have been framed with lies, i was never able to find out what happened from her. It must be said that there also was some cultural and language barrier. Life broke my path and i had to relocate far away. I tried to contact her still she never replied. Of course years later i found out that she had married that other guy. I could never forget holding hands with her, even after having been in other relationships.

John Chessant, try scholar-pianist William Kinderman's "Beethoven." Now at UCLA's school of music, he was giving a lecture-recital about 10 years ago on the last three piano sonatas of Beethoven called, "To the Heart from the Heart." I can't find my copy but in the book he discusses the structure of many of the compositions in some detail. His CD of Nos. 30-32 is very revealing.

@@lachankla3124 Probably true concerning these toccatas, but I found this: >>Soon after his move to Vienna in 1792, Beethoven was swept into the circle of Baroque enthusiasts who gathered every Sunday in the apartments of Baron Gottfried van Swieten to perform music by Bach. He lost little time responding to his host’s invitation to peruse his library of early music. He soon began to acquire manuscript copies of Bach’s music that came his way and eagerly snapped up published editions as they became available. His correspondence mentions several attempts to locate a copy of the B-Minor Mass, which remained unpublished during his lifetime.
