I love all Gould's recordings of Haydn. They've made me much more curious about Haydn's music.

Great composition, great performance. If you feel like you're getting a bit stale with your listening skills, listen to Gould play. He will sharpen your focus and magnify your joy. Bravo to Haydn. As great as he is, he's still a bit underrated. Haydn was a giant.

In Stockholm, they have the recordings for Beethoven’s Op.110, Alban Berg’s Op.1, Mozart’s piano concerto and Bach’s Concerto 1.

I can imagine Mr. Gould saying to himself, well it says allegro. Perhaps Haydn would've wanted it to be played fast so that the long phrases are easier to hear. I can play at the speed of a piano student or I can make it more spiritually expanded. There's plenty of recordings at the slower speed. Haydn would've wanted to hear it like this if the instruments and the performers could do it, but not every time maybe. Sometimes it could be played slower than standard. In any case I'm not going to record it like everybody else. That just goes against the Art of music as an exceptional spontaneous conception (especially when there are so many recordings that sound the same due to what's been accepted).

I have an actual Columbia LP of this that also includes Mozart's Sonate No. 10 and K394. I never thought to try the 1st Mvt of the Haydn at 45 rpm. Holy Cow! At mfr's recommended speed, the 2nd mvt and Mennuetto are beautifully played at "respectable tempi of Community Standards."
