After watching many interviews with Gould, I am convinced that his ultimate objective, in these and other recordings, was to ensure that people would STILL be talking about him in 2022 and on into the future. :)

This Haydn record is one of the best in Gould discography. Of course it will never be "cool" like the Golberg to the general audience but the rendition of this sonatas is just overwhelming, showing the terrific peak of artistry that Gould was able to reach.

Wonders will never cease- Gould actually played the da capo in the Adagio. An idiosyncratic performance- but nevertheless irresistible. Love your choice of performances, David. Many thanks.

Lebhafte und wunderschöne Interpretation dieser perfekt komponierten Sonate im veränderlichen Tempo mit klar artikuliertem Klang des technisch fehlerlosen Klaviers und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Der zweite Satz klingt echt schön und auch beruhigend. Im Kontrast klingt der letzte Satz echt lebhaft und auch begeisternd. Wahrlich intelligenter und unvergleichlicher Pianist!

I agree. I found this rendition to be too offensive on the ears.

@@chrisclr GG had of course a fine piano technique, to bad he did nothing with it. The music of f.i. Bach and Haydn was all about "conversation", question and answer but GG rattles everything off from the first note to the last. For some reason this is appealing to many . I know the score of this Haydn sonata and the meaning of the notes is obvious but GG chose to disregard it totally.

I suspect that Gould would be delighted to read your evaluation of his performance. What with all the recordings of Haydn's piano works that provoke a mere shrug of the shoulders. Gould of course saw recording and performance solely as a means of delivering something fresh. And he succeeded brilliantly.

@@davidhertzberg Agreed. By disregarding completely the rhetorical character of the music of the classical period GG really created sth new. That's why I refered to the performances by computer programmation.

@@christianwouters6764 Agree with you, this is why he's most renowned for playing Bach, as Bach is one of the few composers that actually sounds good with midi haha!
