Glenn Greenwald: The NSA Can "Literally Watch Every Keystroke You Make"

www.democracynow.org - The German publication Der Spiegel has revealed new details about a secretive hacking unit inside the National Security Agency called the Office of Tailored Access Operations, or TAO. The unit was created in 1997 to hack into global communications traffic. Hackers inside the TAO have developed a way to break into computers running Microsoft Windows by gaining passive access to machines when users report program crashes to Microsoft. In addition, with help from the CIA and FBI, the NSA has the ability to intercept computers and other electronic accessories purchased online in order to secretly insert spyware and components that can provide backdoor access for the intelligence agencies. American Civil Liberties Union Deputy Legal Director Jameel Jaffer and journalist Glenn Greenwald join us to discuss the latest revelations, along with the future of Edward Snowden, who has recently offered to assist U.S. targets Germany and Brazil with their respective probes into NSA spying.

this effectively renders any electronic evidence in court to be unusable - which renders the entire 'spying' process down to a question of 'is the nsa trust-worthy or not?' rather than 'is the electronic evidence real or not?'. the evidence of that question of trust is clear.

People who think that privacy exists on the web know nothing about how computers work, if I type something here on youtube and decide not to post my comment the information was still gathered by youtube because I was interacting with their website, even if I did not hit post, the act of just typing in this box is still registering activity.

The whole point here is that, by installing compromised bios and firmware, the NSA circumvents all software/OS/encryption protections. They have hardware root access, so to speak. You can use whatever you want, it's still running over their layer

I had a Law Enforcement Official at the Attorney Generals Office in the State of Hawaii tell me I better not screw with them and it was with the F word,or I could show up missing,never to be seen by family or friends again.& I can positively I.D. the person via a photograph,when I brought up drones in the conversation,at a local government bldg.

I wonder if this malware which tracks all of our activities was developed in-house at the NSA (as 75% of their budget is allocated for) or outsourced to a private company like MICROSOFT. As someone who previously worked in HR at MICROSOFT I know that they record every keystroke their employees and contractors make on their computers so this sounds eerily similar. Any thoughts?

Hes is full of it. It is not worth it for a company to intercept a device. First off it could never be used in court, second off it would be a specific target that the surveillance of that person would already be active. Finally I could find it on the command line, or replace the secondary memory with a new drive.
