"You're Being Watched": Edward Snowden Emerges as Source Behind Explosive Revelations of NSA Spying

www.democracyno... - Former CIA employee Edward Snowden has come forward as the whistleblower behind the explosive revelations about the National Security Agency and the U.S. surveillance state. Three weeks ago the 29-year-old left his job inside the NSA's office in Hawaii where he worked for the private intelligence firm Booz Allen Hamilton. Today he is in Hong Kong--not sure if he will ever see his home again. In a video interview with the Guardian of London, Snowden says he exposed top secret NSA surveillance programs to alert Americans of expansive government spying on innocents. "Even if you're not doing anything wrong, you're being watched and recorded," Snowden says. "And the storage capability of these systems increases every year, consistently, by orders of magnitude, to where it's getting to the point you don't have to have done anything wrong, you simply have to eventually fall under suspicion from somebody, even by a wrong call, and then they can use this system to go back in time and scrutinize every decision you've ever made, every friend you've ever discussed something with, and attack you on that basis, to sort of derive suspicion from an innocent life and paint anyone in the context of a wrongdoer... The public needs to decide whether these programs and policies are right or wrong."

Is it really the truth? Have you ever wondered who could be listening to and watching all the videos? The sheer number of people talking about 9/11 would overwhelm their actual capacity. Do you think a computer can tell the difference between serious statements and sarcasm? Could they even arrest everyone who is questioning the establishment? They NEED us to police ourselves... Snowden is helping to create the perception of a panopticon that doesn't actually exist, but if everyone gets scared and settles down, the truly courageous will be easy for them to spot.

It looks to me whatever Snowden saw and learnt at NSA was so horrific that loosing his freedom or life was less scary for him than to live knowing what expects all of us if he will keep quiet. I guess his generation just has more guts.

I agree. The NSA can keep tabs on 7 billion people but can they blackmail 7 billion people if they do something that exposes them? I don't think they can stand a 7 billion attack or even the whole of America attacking them. There's one flaw with the NSA. The one thing that hurts them the most, a whistleblower. Enough whistleblowers and the NSA will breakdown. Right now I'll be probably be placed as a possible "terrorist". The irony that the NSA is the real traitor towards the world but people don't recognise that they are a traitor. We fear something unknown. So what do they truly fear?

He's definitely a spook. It makes no sense that he could ever get into that role with any level of conscientiousness that would overrule his survival instinct. The NSA wished they could tell everyone, but you can't exactly stand up and say, "BTW we're doing a bunch of illegal things that you should be really scared about without real cause because we don't have enough people to be watching everyone - not even close."

Non removable batteries both assists the Surveillance State and the smartphone manufacturers by forcing the technology to become disposable and thus increase turnover. In an era where governments lecture populations re recycling and environmental awareness, this exemption for smartphones stands out as being inconsistent and hypocritical. I would rather go without than buy a smartphone with a non removable battery. It smacks of environmental waste and decadence and is akin to buying a laptop designed with a maximum user life of no more than 2 years. The Surveillance State exists to monitor Working Class dissent. That's its main purpose. Terrorism is a red herring.

If Snowden would have given this information anonymously would we have fought the problem he exposed? Since he chose to reveal who he was, the story became more about him than about the privacy concerns. He is still my hero. He gave up everything for us. He stood up for what he believed was right. Not too many people do that these days.

Simple fact is this. The NSA or government has no right to monitor phone calls regardless of reason any more than a police officer has the right to randomly search houses. And our federal court system is now corrupt so it is not up to us to wait politely for our rights to be given back. This is no different than the illegal search and seizure the British used to engage in. Illegal as in against the natural rights of man. There is something called probable cause. If the government thinks someone is a terrorist or linked to then get a warrant explaining why. Just like a police officer can use probable cause-ie he smelled like weed out of his mouth so I searched his vehicle. You can’t just randomly search or monitor at the government’s whim. And by the way thanks a lot Bush for starting this whole invasion with the Patriot Act. As I have written, we are becoming accustomed to losing our freedom due to apathy. America has not had a real problem since WW II. Not on a tyrannical type scale. We are too interested in reality TV and Fantasy Football. We have become too fat from the Whopper to run for freedom. Many in America just don’t care. Half of the youth can’t even name the Vice President. And when you have a nation like that it will be very easy to implement tyranny. As long as there is vodka and a shack nearby. Because it happened before when there was the shack and vodka. And our genetic makeup isn’t any different than a Russian’s. Charles Hurst. Author of THE SECOND FALL. An offbeat story of Armageddon. And creator of THE RUNNINGWOLF EZINE

Dear NSA I am requesting information. I was on the phone with my mom and she told me it was the last straw and I MUST attend her sighn language graduation. She learned to sighn to help deaf people. I was not paying good enough attention and need the time and address I said I wrote down. If you can record and save my communications against my constutional rights then you should do me this IMPORTANT favor.

I WATCHED an interview where they had all these various technology geeks & influencers talking about Orwell & the question proposed was what would Orwell think of present day society? One of the talking heads mentioned that Orwell wouldn’t be so impressed with the technology but that fact that The Powers That Be, got the mass public to not only pay for it, but able to place a premium on the most personally invasive/intrusive devices. ALL FOR YOUR SAFETY. “Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.” -Edward Snowden

About 1998, I was informed by whistleblower (anon.) of "US State Department surveillance of my activities overseas". My business trips were nothing more than an attempt to create my own Entrepreneurial venture into Importation of foreign textiles to Hawaii, for commercial manufacture of American made clothing for retail distribution. That's all. After 9-11, my entire collection of textile samples, listed as such in the US Customs Disclosure Document, was seized by P.O.E. Customs officials. Under threat of retaliation with a Federal Lawsuit, my seized property was subsequently released and a personal check was accepted as US Customs Duty on the merchandise. My business ended abruptly, and I never again traveled to a Muslim country for any reason. I still have a label (three letter / three numeral) that is on record in NSA data base forever, in spite of Presidential Proclamation (Clinton) to remove from all files, the names of all (presumed) innocent victims of US Government Secret Surveillance Program (Code Name unknown). The recent President Elect has promoted by Executive Privilege the approval of unchecked spying on average American Citizens, in violation of US Constitution First Amendment Rights. Why isn't America in vehement protest over this? Are we all comfortable with the manner in which government can spy on our internet activity without a Federal Court Order? What have we done to be treated like we are suspected enemies of our own country? = Wake Up America =

The collection of data is standard, however agency staff need to be tightly restricted on what or how they can monitor what they have access too. The problem is corrupt staff can miss-use it to spy on their partners or run protection rackets for criminals.
