ABOUT US:
Weber State University (WSU) - Automotive Technology Department - Transmission Lab. This video demonstrates the operation of a typical manual transmission. See the parts of a manual transmission in operation. The information here applies to most manual transmissions and transaxles. This particular transmission is a 1995 Toyota "Truck" 5-speed Aisin R150 model. A version of this same transmission is used in some newer vehicles today. We teach current vehicle technologies to our automotive students at Weber State University and online. For more information visit: www.weber.edu/automotive
This video helps demonstrate part of the following NATEF Tasks:
A3.C.3 "Diagnose noise concerns through the application of transmission/transaxle power flow principles.", a priority 2 task.
A3.C.4 "Diagnose hard shifting and jumping out of gear concerns; determine necessary action.", a priority 2 task.
This video was created and edited by Professor John D. Kelly at WSU. For a full biography, see www.weber.edu/automotive/J_Kel...

This was way better than any video featuring 3D animations of manual transmissions. Really gotta see the real thing in action to feel like it's practical. Thank you for showing ALL of your working and continuing to repeat key phrases and concepts as you kept using them. I appreciated how centered this was on Neutral. Like, that's the starting point for everything, and then where can and do you go from there? I learned to drive automatic transmission cars and I'm about to take a course on how to ride a motorcycle (but I haven't yet), which I know will involve manipulating manual transmission. Until now, I always kind of regarded Neutral as a "neat feature" of the gearbox, but I personally never found any practical use for it. This video has driven home some concepts that make me really appreciate the Neutral gear position, and I hope that I can apply this lesson in ways that will make me a better driver and a better rider.

This has got to be one of the best explanations and demonstrations of a manual transmission on the internet. I've been through several and this really clears up a lot of concepts. And for the content critics, you're not really helping. I'd hazard a guess that we'd be lucky if 1% of current generation could even change their own oil. The skills and knowledge this man is spreading are going to be absolutely vital in the near future. I'm glad I grew up with a dad that taught me how to work on my car. Right now, in my area, you can't get your car into a shop in the same week, often not in the same month. If you don't know how to work on your rig, you're gonna be stuck. The average age of tradespersons in the US is climbing at an alarming rate. How about we focus less on his lack stellar video editing and production skills and focus on the invaluable experience he's sharing. Plenty of gen-z kids are going to be perfectly competent content creators, but a tiny handful of them can work on a transmission, and that's gonna bite at some point, hard.

Haven't been able to find a proper explanation of the sync rings how they work. Almost all explanations just leave it at "they match the speed of the gears". For real though. I finally understand that the transmission fluid isn't just for keeping the gears themselves from grinding up, but the synchronizer rings as well if they're having to rub up against another gear spinning at a different speed.

Well, congrats. You're about to enter into a very deep pool of knowledge not only on how cars did work in the past but also how modern EVs and hybrid vehicles work today. I have the utmost respect for the good professor here and his pedagogy methods of explaining complex stuff so that everyone can understand it. Enjoy the dive.. or ride.
