Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds kzbin.infoUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. Great job. As I watched you wield a persuader to mate the rafters to the beams, a lesson I've learned when building outdoor projects in the NW came to mind: the end grain shoulders of the notches on the rafters aren't going to dry much when tightly fitted, and they will expand in the wet seasons, slowing crushing the cell walls of the beam while driving in moisture. Even Cedar is subject to rot sooner than you'd think--unless you source old growth. It's tempting to always want to show off precision, but a bit looser fit, consistent of course, will last a lot longer. Alternatively, it pays to take the extra time required to apply end grain preservative, especially on the tenon shoulders, which being horizontal, will trap and hold moisture every time it rains.

You did an amazing job!!! I bet your wife was very happy with it! I was getting so nervous seeing you clamp numerous boards together and cut them all at the same time. I have done this and made a huge trellis and cutting all the boards at the same time was just too much for me, I kept thinking I would make an error. Mine finally came out great but yours is amazing! I’ve been building a pergola over the patio I made out front of our house. It’s about 16x 9 so a decent size. I’ve spent about a month working here and there, mainly on the weekends but I am also sanding every board and staining. It’s such a huge improvement to the front and people are amazed at how it’s turning out. Nothing better then having neighbors ask you if you charge to do this work. Heh. Long as you are creative handy with tools anyone can build these. Having the right tools is a major help also.

Planted a single Wisteria plant along a new cedar fence with lattice top thinking it would look cute. After a few years the vine had literally strangled, crushed and deformed my fence. It's like slow motion violence combined with Shackleton's wooden ship ripped apart by pack ice. Ruined the fence and then proceeded to climb and strangle a nearby cedar tree up to 30 foot heights. Plant should come with a waning label.

I have a pool in the backyard and concrete ground’s not leveled up, and you gave me this brilliant idea on how to set up post heights and saved me from the dilemma! Thank you man!

Really a GREAT job … I just done building one and you did a few things I wish I had done …. I got all my wood cut them to length and corner routed all the edges and notched out all the wood and basically put together like an erector set … it is 12X16 and just got the last shade installed along with a sail inside the pergola … I built it because of the afternoon sun and heat and enjoy outdoor eating and afternoon relaxation … I give you a 12 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

The notching is super top notch and the spacing is super on spot. I have yet to see a craftsman put all the boards together and do that all at once

If you watched the video because you wanted to see how to build one, why in the world would someone thumb down this video. He showed all the tools and cost. You can buy a generic one at your local Costco for $1500 plus $400 for install. This one will most likely survive a hurricane. People are so judge mental. Great work!

Great video! Subscribed! The only thing I would've done different and it would've taken longer would be used spar urethane (oil based) on the wood after the final cuts just prior to installation making it water repellent preserving it for many years.
