It is actually not in the least surprising that Gould would perform this work. Gould regarded Richard Strauss as "the greatest musical figure who has lived in this century." Unfortunately for Gould, Strauss did not write very many compositions (other than his songs) that use the piano. The Burleske is probably the best of such works. It is actually the first of Strauss works to enter the standard repertoire. Gould's performance here, despite some sensitive playing, is of course too slow. The classic recording of this work is Byron Janis with Fritz Reiner conducting.

Whatever mocking Strauss may have meant by this piece, Gould managed to make a real drama out of it, although I am not sure he actually meant it, because he knew the background of course. Every time I listen to this version I love it more and more.

I agree Alice. I didn't know anything about this work, or that this video even existed, but I'm mesmerized by the work, and even more, as usual, by Glenn's thoroughly heartfelt interpretation of it. As you might know, Glenn loved Richard and recorded many of his works.

I think Gould was interpreting the piece ironically, but the irony would have come across more acutely had he played the fast sections faster. Nevertheless, the clarity is amazing, and this is fascinating as a historical document.

Perhaps not so uncharacteristic of him, given his acute sense of parody. Remember his radio and TV programs? And he enjoued Strauss's piano music (he recorded his piano sonata). I'd say here the tempo is a bit too slow However, Gould's playing is supremely clear, articulate and sensitive.

A simple mathematical equation: You take the tempo from Glenn Gould, you multiple this tempo with 1.25 from the original and add a little bit more temperament and musical esprit: then you have the ingenious interpretation from Martha Argerich with Claudio Abbado !

@@TheSonofFrank We won´t know the original interpretation. Even if one could read a critique on the scherzo of that time, the reviewer would be biased, standing in his current musical period. This Strauss sounds like Prokofiev, ahead of his time. The category of burlesque was a decoy to slip a real avant garde opus into the status quo. Genius.
