I love to watch this man play these Goldberg Variations over and over❤! His extremely long fingers bounce among the keys, while you see-sometimes hear-him sing the notes with joy, sometimes with seriousness, but never hitting the wrong key! He is an unusual marvel!!

I first heard this Glenn Gould performance on an LP in 1954. Later I got to meet him after a concert at the UW/Madison in the 1960s. There he was introducing us to some contemporary Russian composers. Some of my most treasured piano CDs are Gould performances.

I too treasure Gould's album CDs, in the 60s my father bought home a new discovery, recommended by a clerk at Wallich's Music City on Wilshire Blvd. It was the Italian Concerto & Partitas 1&2 album, and as a beginning piano student age seven, I became obsessed with both the album and Gould himself. What a privilege you enjoyed to have met him! I was touched to learn that Gould's last public performance was at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, a favorite destination of my parents for concerts and plays on their Saturday date nights! How I wish that they had heard him there in person. Gould was utterly unique in his way of using changes in tempo and chord/note voicing to reimagine Bach's melody and counterpoint lines, so that every note and chord could shine a new, like a recut diamond. I must say he has spoiled me for most other pianists' interpretations of Bach, in comparison, they sound tentative, even a bit frazzled and muddy. But you already know that. If you haven't already, I humbly urge you to hunt down a copy of the art film, "37 Short Films About Glenn Gould". The film's unique structure and casting does an exceedingly rare justice for such an unusual, eclectic and erudite man, one whose brain, ears and fingers simultaneously catapulted us both far, far beyond today's world, and also far, far back to Leipzig and Bach's world.

The quodlibet is absolutely majestic. IMHO, the Goldberg variations should end with it. Repeating the aria detracts from the incredibleness of the sequence of variations, and the marvelous 30th variation, which is its magnificent apotheosis.

Love that Gould choose to play all the cannons in sequence. You gotta love Bach's rigorous ability to create such highly artistic cannons on all the scale degrees. That must've made him one hell of an improviser. Would be interesting to see what he could've done past the 9th interval or even on the accidentals.

Like Samson and his hair, Gould gained his supernatural ability from his mystical chair! Crafted from wood found on the upper slopes of Mt. Olympus! Touched by the hands of Orpheus himself! LIke the hammer of Thor, the chair would fly any distance, break through any wall or obstacle at the raising of Gould's hand! Even now, the chair sits bolted to a museum floor, to prevent it flying to rest upon Glenn Gould's grave!

"Let's not waste time hearing it again...." genius comment, surely Bach laughed? I hope they have met, but fear Bach may have been re-incarnated and Glenn just missed him!

folks relax about the vevo; who gives a eff. We are this video available-that is what is important. The thing about gould is his playing looks so effortless and has this whole score memorized reminds us of how much this man has practiced this piece.
