Great video nicely captured! Just a shame nothing on the West Cliff - there's so much happening and it would alleviate some of the crowding if people visited the markets and events near the Whalebones - such a fabulous photo op too! Come back in April! Loads happening at The Pavilion.
@thewhitbyphotographer2 ай бұрын
It all gets a bit official on The West side. Ive witnessed some quite unpleasant comments and behaviours from some event organisers. The lady who got thrown out the metropole being one. Think she ran sexy Sunday ? Always a lot to say, and not much of it very nice.. I like to stay clear of nonsense that comes with official events, committees and commercial ventures. Loving the fringe far too much to venture away from town centre.
@raychelmcguin2 ай бұрын
@@thewhitbyphotographer That's a shame - we at Whitby Pavilion are promoting inclusivity and The Gathering is not commercial at all, we are a group of traders who have taken over the April event from this year, back next year with loads for everyone.

Yeah, those handful of people post the same rubbish every year. I never worry about Who comes and who'se a real Goth. I think those people asking the questions are mostly loosers, who we can cope without. Whitby, I believe, welcomes everyone. Isn't it Ironic that the ethos of the Sophie campaign is one of acceptance, yet year after year we still have these judgemental folk unable to accept people just wanting to enjoy themselves in a costume of their choice, which I hasten to add, they always do, despite what the detractors have to say about it.

I met a fellow in Casiopi in Corfu a few years ago . He came from Whitby and was a big part of the Goth scene there . He told me that he actually lived in a disused pub . I can't remember his name, but he had long white hair and a very long white beard . Some of the local Greeks thought he was a Greek orthodox munk, or at least that's what he told me . I have been looking at the variety of pictures of the event and have not seen him in any . I am wondering if anyone knows the fellow I'm talking about and whether he's still involved and doing well.

Great footage.. I've noticed the weekend seems to have got away from the original ‘Goth Subculture’ of old, based mainly around the music of particular Goth bands and the style that came from an original subsection of Punk, starting with bands like the Damned, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend etc.. But today it seems to have lost that edge and just become ‘weekend gothic fancy dress or ‘gothic steampunk fancy dress’. I'm not trying to detract from those people that obviously enjoy dressing up for the weekend, I'm just saying its lost its youthful rebellious subculture edge, like those who lived a Goth lifestyle and dressed this way 24/7, not just a couple of times a year.
@MissMollyMoo9972 ай бұрын
Goth has always been about the dark and macabre, not necessarily just the music (which I do like and go to alternative clubs regularly), most of that music isn't goth it's post punk, dark wave, new wave, so the actual subculture splits off into various niche subcultures, inclusive of folk, metal etc.,. As long as you appreciate the dark and macabre in life I think it's perfectly fine to visit, dress up in the clothes and celebrate all things dark. I've studied subcultures since I was in my teens and I'm now in my 20s, so I think the gatekeeping in what is supposed to be an all accepting society is honestly not very welcome.

These people aren't Goths though. Just normal people in Whitby for Halloween. Goths don't wear costume and don't aimlessly walk about town looking for thier photo taken.
@thewhitbyphotographer2 ай бұрын
Doesnt matter. I loved seeing whoever they were and what ever they wore, and given the amount of smiling faces, a whole bunch of other people had a great time too. Thats the Whitby I was born in and have lived in for all my life, there are no rules to who can come here and have fun.
@benfletcher96592 ай бұрын
@@thewhitbyphotographer I think the same way about if Football or Rugby was permanently banned or stopped, expect you might feel the same way I do about this though. You don't care because your not a Goth or affected by it and I am not a Sports fan. The town is fickle, I remember when they used to put signs up "no Goths" soon changed their song when they smelled £££. Now the public don't feel out of place the town would happily see Goths out and replaced by normals in costume.
@thewhitbyphotographer2 ай бұрын
@@benfletcher9659 I think the people who didnt want goths still don't want goths here. The ones I know who are anti Goth are not in the tourist industry and still speak out about the problems the goth weekend causes. As for sports. whats that got to do with who is allowed to come to Whitby two weekends a year. It's a nonsense analogy. I come across this problem very often with Goths, they scream for acceptance, yet want to ban everyone from a seaside town they dont live in every October, thats not very accepting is it. Claim to be progressive yet are the most unprogressive judgmental people I meet.
@benfletcher96592 ай бұрын
@@thewhitbyphotographer We originally went to Whitby to be around others Goths. It was 5 nights of clubs, gigs, bands and markets. It was cheap, out of season and not busy. The Steampunsk then started latching onto the weekend. walking around aimlessly getting photographed. People then assumed wrongly we all wanted our photo taken. Photograph's circulated, more not Goths came to gawp at us, more Steampunks, more photographers, more Goth spotters and more public to gawp. Prices increased stupidly and the town stupidly busy that its avalanched out of control. I have nothing against people wanting to wear costume normally but you don't need to go to Whitby for this. Its caused prices to go up and get silly busy when they could quite easily have gone to York, Harrogate, Bath or any nice city (they are not going for the bands, the venues etc). It would have been great and made something interesting for those places. Unfortunately they all go to Whitby, where they won't stand out and we have been pushed out. I hope you can see my point of view.

Although it was a brilliant weekend, helped by the good weather and I had a great weekend, it is a bit sad that it has morphed from a "goth" weekend into a fancy dress/streampunk weekend. It was far better in the 90s when it was pure goth. Bit of a shame really.
