My Great Grandfather & Grandfather help build Independence & Cottonwood Pass. There were other roads too, Rocky Mt. National Park, Monarch, Million $$$$ Hwy - Ouray to Silverton, Colorado National Monument & Grand Mesa Road. They helped supervise Civilian Conservation Corps road construction crews. They built a lot of roads in their time. I was born in Grand Junction, CO.

Mike, have you realized what a beautiful country you live in? We, in the Netherlands, have to make do with only flat land and a small hill in Limburg. The roads are some of the best in the world. But the view in America is cracking.

@@andrewj4442 That's what we're going to do. Our schedule is to come to America in 2023. We want to buy a camper in America and then tour for 3 months. We buy the camper on day 1 and sell it on day 2. So that we can hand it over to the new owner after 3 months. If we lose $1,000, that's still cheaper than renting.

Thanks for the ride through the canyon. The last time I was through here was in October of 1988. The westbound elevated section and tunnels were not open or in most cases, even there. While I was traveling westbound, most of the highway was either on stretches that are either now the eastbound lanes or are stretches of bike path. I guess that some of the ramps leading to the rest areas are part of the old US Highway. I can’t wait to be able get back that way and drive through the canyon in both directions. I’m glad they were able to get the road reopened fairly quickly.

Thank you for sharing. I was wondering if it had opened yet. We drove from Louisiana to help our son and his family move from UT to TN. This happened the day before we left UT and had no idea about it until it was too late to turn around. We had to go Monarch, late at night through all that construction and with storms and loaded down. It was not a fun drive. I'm just grateful we didn't leave a day early and were one of those who got stuck in the tunnel. By the way...beautiful country out there. My parents are from there, and I've always loved Colorado!

Love it. After watching al the 9News videos on KZbin and seeing that damage at 123.5 from rocks and water from nearly 2000 ft up the hill and then seeing the big hole in the east bound lane there, i am amazed at how quickly the road reopened..So kudos to the Colo Dept of Highways. i wonder where all the rock went that they hauled away. The dust at the Bair Ranch exit was from a mud slide that went nearly 3/4 mile each way on east bound and was like 4' high. Thanks Mike for the video and yes you can hear the acceleration of the V!

I hate to admit I've missed a few of your videos, but this is my first time riding shotgun in the V. Love the change in perspective. Thank you for showing the damage in Glenwood Canyon. I'm always amazed at the highway and how it's constructed. I'm so old I remember when it was Hwy 40, before I-70, before the Johnson-Eisenhower tunnels (and everyone went over Loveland Pass), before Lake Dillon, and when Glenwood Canyon was a two-lane highway with few opportunities to pass.
@jackball42013 жыл бұрын
Hi Waneta, Loved going through the Glenwood canyon late at nite, on a two lane road, no cars and trying to see if i could average 70 mph. When you are young, can be kind of stupid. Now im content to cruise along. My uncle was an engineer for the state and i remember walking across the bridge that goes over the Eagle River just before the curve west of the Wolcott exit. He explained about two layers of rebar on the bridge deck crisscrossed 8" on center and how it was his job to count bar and to see if it was all tied properly before they poured the concrete. Later i was on a crew that did the bridges across the Colorado at Dotsero. That was an experience.

It sure was fun driving back then, especially in the winter with just two wheel drive and no snow tires! How'd we survive?!
@neeterb55843 жыл бұрын
My dad was a traveling salesmen, first of key blanks and key making machines and then of car seat covers sold to car dealers, whose territory was Wyoming, Utah, western Colorado and northern New Mexico. He covered his territory every 6 weeks. I learned all about recapped tires (bias ply and snow tires) and the usefulness of studded snow tires. He was selling cars in Steamboat when the Oldsmobile Toronado (the first front wheel drive car produced in the US) was introduced and his dealership got one of the first delivered in Colorado.

From what I could tell, CDOT reported several roads closed even when they weren’t not to stop congestion, but to stop people in large trucks and busses who think the GPS is always right from taking these roads. There is a lot of truck traffic, and these truckers will take the route of least resistance. In fact, even still, a bus tried to take cottonwood pass, and got stuck! So even though the news is giving them crap for “closing” those roads, if they didn’t, there would have been a lot more issues.

@Sam Macaw well, there was a fire not too long ago that burned the plants and trees that held the earth together then came the rain, then... mudslides. I don't believe it was an earthquake. I'm not sure, so if I'm wrong someone can correct me.
@jackball42013 жыл бұрын
@@ghodgeco Hi you guys, A fire that started at the west end of the canyon, burnt east, north up to the top and crossed the river and burnt south all the way to the top. Called the Grizzly Creek fire. Closed I-70 for what 2 weeks last summer. Mike has video of the burn after the road opened last summer. The canyon walls go up nearly 2000 ,dont believe it? look it up. and so when Colorado had some good rain storms, the rock and dirt that was held together by the vegetation all came down at various places through the canyon and also across the river came down from the south side and buried the railroad tracks.. Again this is the main thoroughfare for both rail and vehicle traffic through Colorado. There is video of them cleaning up on the tracks on KZbin,, like 9News.

I can't believe how smooth and perfect I-70 is through Colorado. Ain't that nice through Indiana that's for sure. Indiana should hire Colorado D.O.T. to come maintain I-70 through our state.
@faithismespeaks68483 жыл бұрын
@ James Barrow, For all the money DC wastes and blows up it's ass all our roads and bridges should be paved with gold with free food and drinks along the way. Anymore in Colorado you almost have to have 4WD and great suspension just to drive on the regular roads.
@kingjames82833 жыл бұрын
@@faithismespeaks6848 - Now when I travel to the desert southwest from Indiana, I avoid Colorado at all costs. I prefer the southern routes. It is an absolute disgrace that the gov't allowed our interstate system to fall into such disrepair. The money is there but has been re-directed to other projects or pockets which have nothing to do with transportation infrastructure. A few years back, Indiana raised fuel taxes again which raised billions of additional dollars which was supposed to go towards our highways and infrastructure except it didn't and now the state is talking about raising fuel taxes yet again. It's the same song and dance about revenue generated from our lottery system which was to supply funding to our educational system. Well that didn't happen either. Oh the money is there but it too was re-directed away from its intended purpose. Recently I heard that federal funds to the states for the battle against Covid-19 instead ended up as major pay raises to elected officials.
