i was a bit unclear on the superman thing. i've never been much of a comics guy so of course people are gonna know more than me, and this is just my relatively uninformed position. to be clearer, the superman i dislike is the invulnerable "nothing can go wrong" superman from the golden age (to my understanding). the superman i like is the one from stories that examine the ramifications of an all-powerful being's existence. in total though i mostly don't care either way, i always thought she-hulk was cooler

Superman Vs The Elite sounds right up your alley, though I will advocate a bit for my big blue boyscout. I find many stories where he is nearly invulnerable and able to solve all of his problems easily intriguing because the effect he has on others. Its the heroism. He is the bar everyone strives to meet, and even he isn't always perfect. With great power comes great responsibility, and he can be interesting regardless of whether or not he lives up to said responsibility.

There’s a lot of different ways to do Superman. My personal favorites are the ones that make clear his humanity. Because despite being an alien from Krypton with the powers of a god… at the end of the day, all Superman is is a farm boy from Kansas who wants to help people out because it’s right. Even if he didn’t have powers he’d still be out there making a difference. Superman is just one of the ways he decided to help people. I think Superman works best when it’s clear that at the end of the day he isn’t some monolith, but just a good man doing his best. And sometimes the problem isn’t something that the Man of Steel can solve with powers, but something Clark Kent can with his good heart and willingness to understand.

It’s mind-blowingly stupid, that’s some serious small child bullshit. “I can’t tell who’s a goodie or a baddie and that makes me angry”, followed directly by saying Daemon is “mostly evil” or whatever? Infantile. Honestly, even looking at things in terms of “good vs evil” in anything other than children’s fiction is stupid, in my opinion. Characters are far more interesting when they’re complex, rather than “incorruptible pure pureness” and “constantly eating babies evil”. “… slowly failing over the generations…” The author so clearly wanted to make the “fading out” point about the Westeros world (which doesn’t work with the rest of their article, anyway) and tried to shoe-horn this in as a plot descriptor for parallel. THIS SHOW IS LITERALLY ABOUT HOW THEY DIDN’T SLOWLY FADE! It’s literally just about how their magnificent control and dragon-wielding came to a head and burst in a spectacular explosion of hate and fire and blood. It’s the literal opposite of slowly fading.
@sherlocksmuuug6692

Exactly! The Dance of the Dragons is House Targaryen getting absolutely crippled when compared to its previous power and then hobbling along at a mostly stable, if somewhat humbled level for another 150 years. Remember, the huge war against Dorne and its eventual peaceful merge with the realm comes *after* this. And all the Blackfyre Rebellions except the first one get crushed pretty efficiently. It's only really the burning of Summerhall killing almost the entire royal family that weakens the dynasty enough to be overthrown. Even then, if Aerys hadn't gone insane there is no indication the dynasty wouldn't have carried on. Thats definitely not "fading". I really like this. A lot of people fall for this narrative of the "Great Decline" for empires in real history, as if a state peaks and then just enters an inevitable slow decline, never succeeding at anything ever again. Which is of course nonesense, things are far more dynamic than that. So it's cool that George established a far more realistic developement for a fictional royal dynasty (even if the Targs are literally the only realistic House in ASOIAF, with every other family having existed and ruled more or less the same territory for milennia).

Some reviewers have been encouraged in some way to give bad hot takes (lol negative reviews) to drum up controversy (lol interest). 3. They're genuinely still personally traumatised from GoT and it's affecting their professional judgement. They're still wrong, either way. Coming at it from an angle with which I do not identify. This person speaks in terms of "we" constantly but it has been thoroughly established that people CAN in fact empathise with morally grey, or even morally black, characters. "Breaking Bad" with Walter White and "The Sopranos" with Tony Soprano being two examples of very much beloved protagonists who are quite dark. Jaime Lannister is one of the more popular characters in the "A Song of Ice & Fire" fandom and he's extremely morally grey. Trying to murder a child and killing his king, but doing it to try and protect his lover and to save half a million people. Not exactly purely morally good actions and yet people empathise with him. Are there people who find it difficult to empathise with darker characters? Anecdotally I would say "yes, there are." But not all people are the same and plenty of people do not have this problem. So rather than talking in terms of "we" the person writing this article should've been honest and just said "I personally." So much of this article is fluff as well. Like just talking about "it has stilted plotting" is meaningless if you don't explain what you mean with that.

Making characters black and white is unrealistic and dull. Most everyone is conflicted on some level and having those qualities in characters make them familiar to us and allowing ourselves to invest in them and the story. Pretty sure most people that come up with these articles are just trying to pad their 5-7 paragraph essay assignment and it reads like a 7th grade, poor take, opinion piece on The Great Gatsby. I feel like it has becomed a legit business now on the internet to just shit on any new show/movie no matter if its bad, mid or actually good. People just gets so many views on yt for simply talking shit about anything new in Hollywood, it dosent matter if the shit talk is valid or not they just gets tons of views from it. Just look at critical drinker for example, his entire channel is made to diss any big movie or show he finds, and he also makes a few videos of movies he actually likes. You can see a clear difference between his view count on a video were he talks shit on a movie and a video were he recommends a movie. Like what happend to film review channels? Have they all just to decide to hate any new movie?

People seem to forget how indifferently the pilot of GOT was received by audiences and critics alike. A big MEH across the board. Now some halfwit (no doubt one of those criticising the GOT pilot) is making profound declarations after ONE episode of a series which will run for probably 4 seasons. The pilot of HOD has been universally praised with a few outliers with their own butthurt axe to grind. It's the biggest ever viewed pilot on HBO, astonishing figures across the globe. That's REALLY going to make them fume.

Disagree on the Superman take Glimbus. He's only boring when handled by a bad writer whose entire repertoire comes down to 'bad guy punch good guy, good guy punch bad guy harder', which just so happens to include most comic book writers. Superman is only perfect physically, he's not immune to emotional struggles or complex questions of morality. If you put Superman into a morally complex and nuanced story, like ASOIAF, where he can't just punch the evil away, he becomes really interesting. In concept it's very similar to Daenerys in the books, and for a very brief period of time in Season 7. You have unparalleled military might, but that's not really enough to solve all the world's problems, and you can't even use it freely because of the collateral damage you could cause.
@infinite5imal

agreed. what's special about him also is that he's good because he CHOOSES to. If he didn't, he has the power to do god knows what amount of damage, but he actively chooses to follow his moral compass to a tea.

I mean even Joffrey, I'm not sure how culpable he even is. He was a child and double inbreed (child of siblings who are children of first cousins) which probaly greatly impeeds his mental capacity. And he was primarily raised by Cersei who was constantly telling him he could do no wrong and was entitled to everything. Gildy Glidy, I ask you consider ole Supes more completely--not just as a story about concealed identity of a survivor from a doomed civilization penned by a Jewish author during War War 2--but also as an exploration of the cultural application of power. Besides just being an emblematic Ubermensch, Superman navigates what it truly means to absolutely wield American morality. Read Superman for All Seasons, All-Star Superman, Red Son, and Morrison & Greg Pak's Action Comics runs for some highlights. I find that most people who begrudge Superman as a boring character without internal or external conflicts are people who haven't really read much Supes. Even in the times that Supes himself isn't the most compelling, he's placed into captivating situations that are only made more gripping by having a moral deus dropped in the middle of.

It’s explained in GOT by Stannis’s daughter the Dance of dragons was a civil war that left the Targaryen empire a shell of what it one was, which is why King Roberts rebellion even won against the Targaryens and he was able to kill the rest, because they were weak and all they had was the mad king and a broken empire with no dragons.

Having more magic in HOTD might have given it more of a unique identity as well as supported the lore of dragons being the source of all enchantments and spells. Not to say the focus shouldn't still be on politics and people, but more of those folks couldve easily been sorcerers, hedge seers, wannabe dragon mages, etc. There were magical elements at play in George's writing during that time which could easily interact with the continent-spanning dance of dragons. I really don’t get the hate some people have for this show. Feels like they decided to hate it long ago and now nit-pick every detail they can. I personally loved it. It had Violence, Blood, Politics, Dragons and Sex. It looks like a decent and well-acted story if the whole series keeps the quality of this pilot. My personal score is a 10 for this pilot. My background (If anybody is wondering): I loved seasons 1-4, Was disappointed buy season 5, Season 6 was mostly bad minus the spectacle (If I rewatch ill just watch the battles) and I hated season 7 and 8. I also didn’t care much for the zombies and the magical element of the show personally (Loved the dragons ofcourse), so when that was coming to the forefront, I was mentally checking out more and more. Didn’t read the books, but I did watch some vids on game of thrones, I also know how this is going end and am excited to see it. Criticism: Race swapping is an easy one, but than again not that big of a deal. They are a separate family and house from the Targarians, they don’t ride dragons, they live on an island and are mainly a naval power that relies on the sea, so they could easily marry some black people from other parts of the world. I could have done without them at the end calling back on the “zombie apocalypse” stuff, but they hopefully wont dwell on that. The crew and cast have said some dumb stuff, which is really baffling considering how well they did the themes in the episode anyway. Even the “Toxic Masculinity” was done well in my opinion. Guys loosing their shit and fighting to the death after loosing the jaust for vanity and ego was shown pretty well. I saw myself in Daemond after he was knocked off and got up enraged wanting to fight 1v1 which gave me something uncomfortable to chew on, however uncomfortable that may be LOL(I am a tall and pretty athletic/muscular guy BTW). If anybody has read everything, I am sorry for any bad English. It not my first language.
