That was a great video !!! I had no idea what a Glimmer Hot Foil System was and now I have to have one!!! Anybody still have the original metal embossing plates that Spellbinders invented? I do! I bet these would run through the glimmer machine and leave a gorgeous impressed image! To me, Spellbinders has always been on the cutting edge of design! I still have my raspberry colored Grand Caliber because it is the only die cutting machine that will do large dies! I plan on getting their newer fold up die cutting and embossing machine, as I think I like it better than my Sizzix which takes up too much room on my table. Way to go Spellbinders!

Watch again if you haven't already yes aware you wrote this question a year ago. But relative today too. But she demonstrates the use of a thinlit or THIN die cut plate to make that soft framed card. Go back again and see her do that. So the answer of course YES you can use SOME DIE plates of course. BUT maybe not all. Steel Rule dies wouldn't likely work well. And I am not sure about some of the embossing and die cutting dies yet even the thin ones. So I myself need to play around too with this. I for one want to foil onto vinyl and faux leathers. When ever I've asked about doing that I get mixed feed back. Some say sure you can others say never and then there are plenty in between. I'm just going to have to experiment. But that's part of the fun and challenge of playing with this STUFF or adult toy's if you will. Take care, stay safe, and spread some whimsy and joy in the world.

Yes as long as it is heat activated foil for that purpose. I mix and match all of them across brands. This includes foil made for laminator methods. i have mostly gemini foils because I'm always finding them on sale and they often come in sets of three selections too. But you don't want to get this foil mixed up with Heat Transfer Vinyl or permanent adhesive vinyls. Both of those vinyls are thicker and they have a super adhesive backing that usually the design is CUT OUT and applied by heat pressing for the HVT or just firmly pressed in place for the permanent adhesive type and is cold applied not heated at all. The HVT is great for Knit T's and sweat shirts etc. The other is great for mugs and hard surfaces however I've seen both used and with pretty decent results. It's called taking a chance and experimenting. Do it with some caution and paying attention or focused on what you are doing and what products you are using and why they may or may not work out to avoid damage of machines or materials. Stay safe and spread some fun.

I really want to try this, however, I have what may seem an odd question. I only have use of one hand/arm, so I can't unhook the machine and hold it -- as she demonstrated. Hi Sandy, Not sure if I'm late answering your question, but if you could put a little tape on your cardstock and then your shim and plate to keep it down that may help you. I use masking tape at the end of my cardstock to hold it down because mine will usually shift. Hope this helps.

No it works with a lot of machines as long as the opening is large enough width and height too. Some of the stand alone less known brands do not have a large enough height to run this size base plate the heated up platform through their openings. I have one of those but I also own a sizzix express and a spellbinder platinum 8.5. Also a gemini but I dislike my gemini it's ruined a number of my expensive 3-D Tim Holtz die and emboss plates two on their first run through. So anyway you will need a embossing machine to work well with this machine to apply enough pressure to it to achieve a solid good take of the foiling.

When using dies, you will need to add an extra cardstock shim or two because the dies are slightly thinner than the Glimmer plates.

Yes usually you can. But you want to use good contrast materials. In otherwords dark blue or black cardstock would look lovely with silver foil. And shimmery whites and pastels might look really nice with gold foil. And of course they make different multi designs and colors in the foils so rainbows are wonderful to use on darks and light cardstock and that includes metalic. However some silver metallic cardstock and silver foil might be lost in transition so to speak. I make mini note books so I like to personalize and own all the zodiac star layouts for all 12 that come in foil plates and choose the darker metallic cardstocks to cut out as covers then foil the stars onto that. So I just ordered 100 pages of dark blue metallic cardstock from amazon to work with just with these dies primarily to foil designs onto. Hope this gives you some ideas and to think outside the box.

Hi Beth! You can use MANY metal wafer thin dies (0.8mm thick) with the Glimmer Hot Foil System. Some things to note: Some dies do not translate well to foiling and you will need to experiment. Also, when using dies, you will need to add an extra cardstock shim or two because the dies are slightly thinner than the Glimmer plates.

Can this be used with rubber stamps and HS’s toner ink?

Probably NOT. The rubber stamp and toner inks is an entirely different approach to foiling. You can often use the same foilling sheets for both but this is for HEAT and PRESSURE combined method. If you laminate you use toner ink by laser or copy machines that use toner and then apply the foil sheet and run through a laminator to heat it and apply pressure but your laminator is not going to accept the sandwich you make here to run through the embossing/die cut machine. Ok both those methods use heat and apply pressure. So since you know how to apply toner ink to a rubber stamp and place the foil over that and run it through a laminator the kind with heat not cold lamination the laminator heat and rollers are applying the pressure. You can sometimes get results to foil via an iron too but it's tricky and you do not move the iron around just press hold and release and move to another spot overlapping and again press and hold and release etc. There is also products that are a tacky glue substance that allows you to apply to rubber stamps and then stick the foil sheets over the printed design via the rubber stamp onto paper and it kinda works but not my favorite for sure. The difference is the laminator and stamp/toner method does not leave an impression in the cardstock but you can get some embossing if you use an embossing machine and follow these directions on this video. Some methods work better than others as she demonstrated.

I bought this machine awhile ago and finally decided to try it, it works great except I keep getting the foil on the paper away from the die. I have tried to cut down the foil, closer to the size of the die and also cut the corners, what am I doing wrong? I really don't want to have to cut down the paper always to just around the design, but use it on front of a A2 card.

Hi Marion! You may be applying too much pressure or using too thick a shim, which is pressing the foil onto your paper where you don't want it. Try using a thinner shim and see if this helps. Hope somebody at Sizzix sees this. HOW does one line up a card front if you place the cardstock on top of the die, which you then cannot see? I have a difficult time trying to line things up, upside down. The grid helps some, but not a lot. Is there a trick that I'm missing?

It's helpful to use cardstock that is a bit bigger than your finished product so you can trim it down if necessary. Hope this helps!

Shim and spacer would be the same thing, really. You’re just adding thickness. If you’re into it, you can use digital callipers. They’re cheap and easy to use.

I have this machine because it was a whole lot less expensive on Office Supply when I purchased it. By the way Google it first because depending on if I selected it on their site it came up higher than an offer from them via google search. I know who knows? Anyway if you are an experienced print maker I believe you would do well with either. Having said that I have not used the gemini version. I have a sizzix Express electric die cutting machine and also the Spellbinders Platinum 8.5 manual. Pretty much many items these days across the bigger name brands work well with one another as long as you stay focused and pay attention and use the right shims and plates and sandwich properly for each of it's quirks and suggestions. I have a lovely LARGE rubber stamp with the song...Oh Xmas Tree..only it's in German and my husbands family grew up in a traditional German Xmas tree ritual of kids did not see a tree until Xmas eve. Then before the french doors opened to see the tree the family gathered together and doors opened and they all sang the song. So anyway I want to figure out how to emboss it as will as foil it. Now it's a mounted stamp on wood base. I may attempt to remove it from the base. It would be too thick to fit through any of my machines. But due to it's size I have never gotten a perfect print or worse trying to get an embossed print via embossing inks and powders. It will smear or skip or worse leave little bits of embossing powder that ruins the print too. Anyway would love to find this song done in script like the one she demonstrates here as in You are a Child....it's about that size. And I would love to find a few more. I do have an alphabet set for foiling but it's not enough characters to print an entire page like I'd need too. Or I would have to buy dozens of alphabets in same size etc. to have enough letters to do it and sure enough they would shift even if laid out on a magnet sheet first. Ok enough of that...since you have a lot of experience with print making again either machine. But do read reviews on Amazon and watch more videos here on KZbin and then search for best prices. They like to sell the Gemini foiler in bundles so the price can jump around quite a bit. Both machines are quite similar in their approach to how they work. You heat up the design plate usually metal and then it helps to warm up the cut to fit foil after it's placed onto the die and then continue to heat for a few more seconds the shims and sandwich plates. I have the full Zodiac set of foiling plates for all 12 along with the die cutting designs and stamps too though several different brands they all mix well together giving lots of options. This is why I want to foil on faux leather and vinyls because I make mini personalized note pads and use the faux leathers as covers. I usually just cut out figures and names but would like to go up a notch and add the zodiac star designs and embellishments via hot foiling too. Some vinyls will melt however so it's a little tricky.

I think the cuttlebug's mouth opening is too small as in not high enough opening to accept the heated plate as a base plate. The cuttlebug from photos I've seen all look too short but wide enough if your dies fit but not high enough.

I think polyesters usually would work fine but some nylons might melt. So you would need to do some trials to make sure it's compatible.

That's a bummer. I was looking at both the Gemini and the Spellbinders machines, I would have to buy the gemini die cut to use theirs. I own the Grand Calibur and thought I would be able to use it. At this point I don't want to have to buy a new die cut machine to use the Glimmer Hot Foil, that would be two new machines...to costly.

@@dmurfval702 Oh watch some of the multiple tips on how to foil where they demonstrate a variety of methods. Some use the laminator method so if you had one you could do that. If you don't there are other possiblities including a tacky glue product that you can apply to stamps like inking and then stamp the paper stock and lay the foil sheets onto that and work or burnish it onto the glued stamp areas. Anyway better to watch the videos to get a feel for the various methods and how great they are.

I don't know what a stampinup machine looks like. But if it uses a large thicker base plate maybe it will work fine. You need to have a high enough opening to accept a sandwhich of sorts not just wide enough too. Otherwise I use the hot plate on a sizzix and a spellbinder both.

Hot enough I do not recommend allowing smaller children to use unattended. And maybe not older kids who aren't mature enough yet to stay focused and not leave it plugged in and or go off to do other things. Yes it has a safety time off if not used button but some teens not all thankgoodness can get distracted and lay say paper onto of this and oops could happen. Anyway they provide a magnetic tweezer to help you prevent burnt fingers and yes hot enough to burn a finger so be careful.

However, if you have already gone over the part that needed transferring, you could just roll it back through the way it went in. I felt she was just saying she didn't need to run it all the way passing as long as she hit the plate both directions fully. It's more her style is all and I took it that way. Of course if you feel the need to go all the way both directions or multple times more than the two once through the machine and then backed again making it two passes sure you can. Maybe she feels it just takes too much extra time during a demonstration that's limited in time.And she may have just wanted the viewers to know she had fully hit the design well so she mentioned it as much as anything else so you would't question if she had actually done it live before your eyes when you didn't see her pass the complete plates all the way through both ways.

@@racena2034 she didn’t make a big deal about not running it through all the way; she was simply saying that you don’t have to. She stated several times that you run it completely over the plate until you feel that it has passed over it. It’s exactly like die cutting, where you don’t have to run it all the way through but only until you pass over the entire die.

Tutorial informative. Speaker needs to check how many times she says “ I’m going to go ahead and....” For me distracting. Otherwise, super information. Thank you.
