Maxson Goh Films Siemens C651 Set 217 heading to the scrapyard after nearly all of it's components were refurbished. This is one of several trainsets that were refurbished as part of a 2015 plan to upgrade the existing Siemens C651s. None have ever been deployed on revenue service before being sent to scrap.

Something that wasn't mentioned is that apparently they were scrapped due to equipment failure, after replacing all of the components, the train was unable to connect to the CBTC system and can only be operated in manual mode. SMRT tried to unsuccessfully fix the issue over many month but ultimately decided it was a waste of time and resources to replace the entire system again so they just cut their losses and scrapped it

Mentioning that only makes it worse though. This means they spent two years to upgrade something without figuring if its key basic functions were possible. That's like you spend 5k to zhng a car, then realise you get on it and cannot brake. What kind of a dumbass upgrade is that!?

Do u even know how shit works? These are refurbished for a pilot test. Also, u can educate ur ignorance by looking at the fares over the years. When fares decrease back to back, nobody cares. When increase, suddenly all make noise. Want faster arrivals, want this want that but dont want to pay. Cheapskate.

Singapore badly needs a train museum. Stop sending all the old trains to the scrapyard, but preserve some of it so that at least the future generations would get to see what sort of trains used to operate on the MRT system. It would be a tourist attraction as well.

The only thing closest to that would be old KZbin clips of these trains. YT is the closest thing we have to a museum or a time machine.

@@swfx101 The new trains will be from Bombardier Canada but will be built in Changchun China. Note that trains from DTL were by Bombardier and too were built in China Changchun Facility Same for Alstom Metropolis of France. The 2nd batch of trains for CCL and NEL were from China as well. Many companies partner with China. Kawasaki of Japan as what many have been complaining had their trains from CSR Qifang. Canada, France, Japanese Manufecturers had their trains built in China. Thats the reality. Only small purchases will be built in their respective countries

@@swfx101 Only small orders would companies be more likely to built at country of origin. But the reality is up to the companies when they bid for the contract. The only known companies are Kawasaki Bombardier Alstom These 3 companies have been the main contractors for SG's rail network. They have facilities in China. Other bidders are Hyundai Rotem or companies from China

By refurbishing a trainset and never entering service, later scrapped is just a waste of time and money. LTA should have sent the refurbished C651s elsewhere.

Damn, if this train had been rolled out immediately after being fully refurbished in 2016, it could've run for 5 years before being scrapped. It's sad to think that so much time, money and resources was dedicated to this project only for it to be all for nothing.

Still kinda surprised that they didn’t use the ones that were already upgraded, it would’ve been perfect to operate them on the Changi Branch Line, sigh... it’s very unfortunate that their next stop was the scrap yard.

Man,even tho I rarely ride the MRT these days,everytime I see the C651 roll into the station,it takes me back to my early childhood in the mid-late 2000s.The nostalgia is just overpowering. It's weird tho,how these train stock are still perfectly usable and then they scrap it.They could have saved millions by using refurbished C651s instead of purchasing new stock

@@humblebumble1328 True. It's so apparent when it's German quality(Siemens) vs China quality(Sifang). I only happen to know the companies that manufactured the rolling stock for SMRT as my father has been a train operator with them since '97.He has driven them all.

I have sat on one countless times as I am from Singapore. Singapore has SMRT trains. But, this is the train I remember taking it for 10 times. Thank you for your service 🚝

My son's favourite mrt train... Siemens train. Every time we took train to travel, my son insisted to take only Siemens train. So we had to wait for Siemens train to arrive then only we can leave the station. That was in 2010 onwards. He called it the White Train. He won't want to board KHI or KNS trains... only Siemens trains. He knew that Siemens trains are made in Germany...

My son is the same. I've waited for countless trains just to get on the white train. I never understood it, but now it makes sense. I hope more public outcry will put a stop to this wasteful practice. I'm sure any engineer can tell us that these machines are built to last. The public has a right to know.

Same. C651 are the best. I also skipped several C151 trains (because it was my least favourite model back then, but now the C801 seems to be my next least role instead) in the past just to wait for the C651.

Same here I also used to wait for white trains when I was 4 5 and 8 I refused to ride c151’s and more I only wait for the c651 which I kinda made my dad waste his time and finally we were bouta leave but c651 white train came

I'm just puzzled over the initial plans to refurbish, the refurbishment was done, money was spent, never put back into service and subsequently scrapped? Good money and parts wasted.

All the trailers are motorised so when the primer movers are reversing, the trailers let out a sound that looks like a motorbike in full power. Great work to Hup Hin Transport Co Pte Ltd which employs high technology when moving these train carriages to the scrap centre.

When the prime mover arrived at the scrapyard while pulling the trailer along with it, the company personnel immediately activated the motor and when it was the turn to bring in the refurbished train carriage, it was the motorised trailer 's turn to pull the prime mover as the prime mover reversed to bring the carriage.

@@Ealsante Well you would likely repair a phone if that broken phone is a new phone that you recently bought and just spoiled it. Rip They did 2 prototypes. There are 19 C651 trains. It underwent some testings which some train observers saw the trains went out on the tracks on the late nights. The number 2 seems to be a standard number for prototypes. My complaint was 1 would be enough for a test train. Would there need be 2 idk? Another issue was bad timing which may have played a part. Im not familiar with this issue(need clarification)but it was said that the C651 upgrade was a project by the rail operator and not the authority. This was before the new rail financing framework existed. When the new rail financing framework came, now that they own the assets, that was perhaps when the authority made the call to not proceed with the upgrade project and hence decided that it was best to have a leaner fleet where not only the 1st generation trains be replaced but the 2nd and 3rd generation be replaced by a fleet of the same type. Had the upgrade project proceed, it would be likely that the 2nd gen trains would continue to run until its service life ends and the issue of a rojak fleet of trains on the NSEWL be present till the end of the decade. If the NRFF and bad timing had a part to play in this issue than it cant be helped in the timing. Rail operator was doing what it can best do based on its capability and can upgrade platforms not acquire new ones. Which require more resources Whereas, the authroity had bigger plans and have the resource and will to do it. Especially so with the recent troubles during that period, they needed to improve rail reliability hence they came out with the NRFF and had a long term goal. This is something which i think rail operators in SG cannot achieve without the authroities help. I think by now since all the incidents in the past years, there has been closer developments and collaborations between operators and authorities The authorities make decisions for long terms developments and planning. The operators job is to run things and maintain the standards set. Any issue will be sorted out jointly by both and learn from it.

Many people don't have much idea about train technology. Nowadays, these old trains produces very loud screeching sound when they travel in tunnels and they jerk left and right a lot compare to the first 10 years of their service. Yes, you can extend the service life shelf by refurbishing but you can't upgrade to the latest parts or even software unless you do a full makeover which cost us a bomb. We might as well get new ones with every single screws new and better design at almost the same cost, why not?

Could've spent the money I didn't want to contribute in the first place to buy some McDonald's but no. It has instead gone to the scrapyard.

Car manufacturers have designated purpose built models for crashing etc. These trains (there are many more) were refurbished with the intention of extending their service lifespan but scrapped when the program failed. There is a huge difference.

I hope for your sake that you're really no older than 13, because otherwise I would, if I were you, be really concerned about my life choices and motives in life to spend time malding at every single person's comments, after searching specifically for a video on a subject matter you despise. However, unless you happen to be far right, you don't seem to fit into the demographics of today's teenagers, as most teenagers these days would be careful not to assume the gender of an internet stranger. Unfortunately, this means that it really doesn't look too good for your life's purpose :( I do, however, believe that it is possible for you to maintain a youthful age while being oblivious to your peers' advancements in society, and am not surprised to see that you are still at the ripe tender age of 13. Hmmm. Maybe due to parts and pprices? Yes refurbish already. But the running cost and spare parts? Maybe previous management find the initial discount attractive. But the later spare part price spiral like nobody business? Unless they publish why the decsion lah. else no one know the full story behind.

This basically means an old building being upgraded to a new and modern one then just not opened to be demolished just a few years later, yep SMRT does the same thing with their trains, such a waste of money, effort and resources... Imagine if it does enter on revenue service can you imagine being the only train to have these unique looks and features? Many enthusiasts would have been hyped for this but the reality turns out to be the complete opposite:( I seriously miss this legendary train, hope the rest of the fleet still stays for a couple more years! I am not affiliated with SMRT in any way and I do not have any insider information. All information presented in this video is public information easily available on the web that was published at some point by SMRT or the local newspaper, with the exception of the trains being sent to the scrapyard which was not mentioned but it's happening literally in front of my eyes with the video as proof. Anyone is allowed to film and publish content taken within public areas without a permit or prior approval. This is why you do not see any footage of the trains inside the depot or being scrapped in the yard as these are private property.

Realised that after the C751Bs are scrapped the NSEWL will have a completely assembled in China fleet (assuming that the R151s are also assembled in Changchun, where the C951s frm the same manufacturer came from)

Any refurbishment fault might result in incidents? Or train whatever fault I guess, maybe that’s why they don’t want to risk another major delay. In the first place, shouldn’t have refurbished.

maybe the mechanics of the engines were too old to be used or maybe new signalling system etc is not compatible with it that it's cheaper to have sent it to scrap.

Thank you! It was an open secret in the train enthusiast community that these trains were going to be disposed of sooner or later, and it took several attempts going down randomly to "try luck" before I eventually got lucky and was able to record this footage to tell a story.
