this ones a bit of a deep cut and definitely unintentional but i love how the line "the milk is turning sour" matched up with the shots of nanami pushing touga away from her, it calls to mind how in the black rose arc, the milkshake was a representation of incest-- when nanami was confronted with the reality of what incest would actually mean, it completely spoiled the fantasy she had of it in her head. ie the milk turned sour. really good.

I didn't intend the milkshake comparison, but yes definitely I was alluding to their relationship and the turn from seeking comfort in touga's embrace to shoving him away from her!!! i always saw the milkshake as more of a representation of the illusion of safety in childhood for kozue and miki (kozue used to drink them>refuses them because "she's watching her figure">asks miki to make her one when she's recovering as she longs to hold onto that illusion while she can believe it) it's overly sweet and sticky but milkshakes are fleeting and you can't sustain yourself on them (much like anthy's shaved ice)

@@wellofhavoc ooo thats such a great read, definitely more interesting than my initial take. nice contrast to the chocolate in the tsuwabuki episode

can you imagine if nanami and anthy had bodyswapped in that one episode unstead of utena

Ohhhh my god foaming at the mouth this is so good. The timing to "rotten to the core/such a bore" both times (the steak, the candles); juxtaposing the box in the river and Anthy's stab; and of course some brilliant deep footage cuts. Absolutely marvelous.

Ugh, I love it when people play with the parallels of these two and show their poisonous dynamic and mutual bullying

YES YES i need more of them realizing the other only acts that way because of the terrible things they can't control and decide to be even worse- like lab mice shocking their fellow rodents for scraps of cheese

@@wellofhavoc Exactly!! I also kind of see Anthy as an involutary mentor figure of Nanami, one who hates her guts yet guides her in a toxic way with her pranks and what she reveals about herself to her. I was thinking perhaps because Anthy finds her childish and pitiful and a mockery of her own situation, and Nanami will naturally rebel against her that can set her on the way of healing and self-realization.
@wellofhavoc3 күн бұрын
@@dasytaylor "involuntary mentor" is SO true- i think also in the sense that utena is a story about stories and anthy views herself and paints herself as different roles for each situation, she may be a "cautionary tale" for one she believes it may not be too late for like "oh you want a relationship with your brother? a romantic one? BAM this is the reality babes, buckle up and come get some- this is what you wanted?" i love them.
@dasytaylor3 күн бұрын
@@wellofhavoc Ohh yes "cautionary tale" is spot on!! Not just for Nanami but for almost everyone from the cast, she's the harsh reality of their fairy tale-like delusions. And if the theory is true that Ohtori is born from Anthy's inner world, no wonder the problems that appear in it reflect her own struggles. Nanami's situation might be Anthy's biggest in the face reminder, no wonder she's so nasty about it, seeing what an annoying person is supposed to represent her who still has what she can't anymore (innocence). sjskdkskf I love Anthy and Nanami sm they both need lots of hugs
