Lyrics:
Adiskide bat bazen
Orotan bihotz-bera
Poesiaren hegoek
Sentimentuzko bertsoek
Antzaldatzen zutena
Plazetako kantari
Bakardadez josia
Hitzen lihoa iruten
Bere barnean irauten
Oinazez ikasia... Ikasia
(Chorus)
Nun hago, zer larretan
Urepeleko artzaina
Mendi hegaletan gora
Oroitzapen den gerora
Ihesetan joan hintzana
Hesia urraturik
Libratu huen kanta
Lotura guztietatik
Gorputzaren mugetatik
Aske senditu nahirik
Azken hatsa huela
Bertsorik sakonena
Inoiz esan ezin diren
Estalitako egien
Oihurik bortitzena... Bortitzena
From Solange Igoa:
"I am Basque and was raised very close to the culture. I grew up hearing this song, and learned it as a child at Basque summer camp - “Udaleku.” This song is about a Basque shepherd and singer. The song, normally a ballad, speaks of words weaved from pain and loneliness, on the wings of poetry, of feelings learned through hardship. It has been such a gift to share this song, to share that piece of me, to take sad words and sing them in a way that sounds happy. It feels similar to how I feel about being Basque, to have this huge part of me but to be so far from the community. The sadness and joy I have through this tether to a language, a people and a place so far away."
