Many say spot on - don't under any circumstances scrimp on UAT testing and surely they have a Live QA Lab consisting of several servers running Microsoft Windows, Azure, various Offshoot test systems, dumb Shopping Terminals, Basic Airport check in, Medical System that they should test to Nth Degree their existing patches and new patches.

Also now agree with others from this thread and others; that customers are also responsible in that you shouldn't apply patches straight away ( automatic ) on a live system without good QA Testing, e.g receiving virus patches should place in a QA Box & system, test the mother out making sure nothing / not much affected before applying the patches live.

The blame should be shared by providers as well as the using companies that all allowed an untested update to be rolled out to their systems. Society essential companies and providers such as hospitals and airports should have acceptance testing as a mandatory step of their update procedures. Note that not all Windows users faced this issue, but only those that accepted this update without prior testing. Only complacent companies that trusted automatic updates to never go wrong got to learn this expensive lesson.

@@mycosys - Interesting. On a previous job for national police I saw that even mere virus definition updates were tested on a secluded system prior to rolling them out. That was quite some time ago, but I think they still do testing as part of their update procedure.

Many say if their customers have a strong case of neglect on Crowdstrike they got a good case of serious Litigation; costing Crowdstrike likely compensation into the $billions but again customers ( doing this from early 90s) should be Testing, Testing, Testing on a Sandbox, UA / QA environment before Live deployment of virus, M/soft security updates / firmware updates, etc

Just so you all know, that was not the BSOD! TRUE BSOD is absolute failure of the bootloader. Crowdstrike is getting away with calling it that when in fact what it was was a lockout that their own protocol triggered. There was no HEX KEY to identify the failure of the system hardware, therefore NOT BSOD!

CS is not traditional antivirus software. It's a network monitoring solution sending data from sensors/agents directly to the CS-managed customer endpoint. The solution focuses on endpoint security, detecting early signs of malware/cyber attacks by analyzing sensor data. Friday's CS update aimed to improve detection but caused chaos instead. 😂😂😂

The problem is not only because of update, it is more, because of updates everywhere, on all computers at the same time. When you can not more, like earlier turn off updates on your comp, or install only well tested updates, a little bit later.

Patients in the middle of surgeries. Doctors unable to see updated patient charts. Customers unable to Fly. Customers unable to withdrawal money or pay bills. Workers unable to work on their computers. Very dangerous indeed. As layman with no technical background, one would presume with any new "update" one would use it in a phased and with some test live systems before it is massly distributed. Would this not be possible with whatever this update was? Major systems seem to have been affected, critical systems like 911, medical databases, people's online bank account, airline ticketing system, people's home systems, etc,. This is very dangerous as who knows what else might be affected and further ramifications. There are already too many data breaches causing many Americans major financial issues/losses. Do Americans now need to be worried about IT companies causing issues with regular system updates? Were they using AI to do their updates? Where were the checks and balances; quality control? What else did this affect?

Basically quite a few companies, since Microsoft is outsourcing part of the updates, have access to put ANY kind of malware in yours and billions of computers if they want to all at once. Once it's a Windows component no antivirus will be able to do anything about it. Think about that. This one is a mistake, but it could be done either on purpose or if the company itself is hacked, or by order of government authorities.

If they understood the concept of staged software updates, such as limiting the update to a small area initially and then gradually extending it over time as a verification process, this situation could have been avoided. However, it seems people have stopped considering the broader perspective. Microsoft also bears responsibility for allowing the update to propagate to such a wide area so quickly.

I think hospitals and airports, or their benefactors, should also take some blame for negligence. At a nuclear plant, in 2011 or 12 [old time instance for data safety] is when they were upgrading to windows XP(2003 version or less). I laughed but then was told it was safer from all angles, software update failure included. And it definitely wasn't cheaper or cutting cost corners since there was also a 6 to 7 digit $ payment to microsoft annually at that time.

In order not to happen again you need to audit companies like Crowdstrike and have a Quality Assurance company between the third party security companies and Microsoft. Or you can nationalize Microsoft due to its impact profile on global productivity and have them follow regulatory standarts. There are measures that can be taken. Only the will to implement them is lacking.

Why? That screen what you see when Windows crashes has been called "Blue Screen of Death" for literally decades. Bad practices by all affected companies not just Cloudstrike are to blame along with Microsoft which by default automatically applies the updates like this everywhere at the same time, the companies affected don’t test or delay updates themselves unforgivable. Cloudstrike is not only to blame, nothing can be tested 100%. This shows poor IT practices by many major companies and institutions.

Your absolutely right. In my country plenty of organisations use Windows and only a few had problems. Unfortunately some were part of critical critical infrastructure, such as the Schiphol airport. Acceptance testing of updates should be a mandatory step when mission critical systems use that software..I've not yet heard any of the affected companies issue apologies for their lack of testing and allowing untested updates to be rolled out automatically.

Many years ago, it'd already been said by some computer experts that the window OS system at that time hadn't been stable enough, especially when it was compared with other then similar competing OS system like say UNIX/ORACLE. The UNIX/ORACLE system was more commonly used by the commercial banks in those past years, simply because those banks' computer system network could never have been down at any time for any excuse in any way, for very obvious safety reasons. Given this global IT outage, maybe the above view still holds today. (I think Apple's OS computer system has had UNIX as one of its basic inner core.)

@@jptrainor they clearly fed up. Seemingly it was tested and then corrupted in the deployment/encryption stage. I would guess many places will be updating their testing.

A lot of companies do this and were unaffected. This should be standard practice for any companies that have more than a few hundred computers and should be a common feature of their IT dept. Even if it does nothing more than delay updates by a day so other companies catch it.

@@PeterSedesse a LOT of these companies WERE on n-1 and n-2 updates for the software. This wasnt a software update it was a malware definition file. While it makes sense these need to go out right away - you cant have half your customers unprotected for a new exploit and stay afloat as a security company - a LOT of sysadmins are REALLY p*ssed it didnt respect their update policies.

The company can no longer be trusted because they can’t roll out a routine update following common sense tested procedure. With the lawsuits they will face, I just sold off all the CS stock that I held.

microsoft as well as the other company involved should pay up the damage that this update failure has done. This is literally costing millions of dollars and even putting lives in danger!!!

what I do not understand is that how such a critical updated was not tested properly before it was rolled out on the internet and update global systems. It has fingerprints of a planned attack. Updates are always tried and tested before rolling out

Didn't check lazurus' advice, but DW News is, "obviously", the English version of their organization, targeting international audience. There is also "DW Deutsch" which is in German instead.

Should have used the vastly superior OS: Linux. It being free and open source makes it easier to test with and predict the behaviour off - hence there CloudStrike didn't affect it like it Windows.
