Global National: July 20, 2024 | Wildfires rage across western Canada as heat wave lingers

After a relatively slow start to the wildfire season, things in western Canada are heating up. As temperatures soar across much of the region with a lingering heatwave blanketing almost half the country, dozens of blazes are being sparked and putting thousands at risk. Catherine Urquhart has more on the escalating wildfire emergency.
British Columbia is currently the epicentre of Canada's wildfire fight, with more than 300 wildfires burning on Saturday. More than half are considered out of control, with around 80 starting in just the past day. The Shetland Creek Wildfire in B.C.'s central interior is one of the most dangerous currently burning in the province. Aaron McArthur has the details.
After warnings that the tentative agreement reached yesterday between the LCBO and the union representing its workers might collapse, both sides are now saying they have signed off on a return-to-work protocol. In a Saturday statement, the Crown agency said that all unionized employees would return to work on Monday and stores would be open to shoppers on Tuesday, pending ratification. Sean O’Shea reports.
Plus, internal documents obtained by Global News are shedding new light on the federal government's recent moves to decrease the number of temporary immigrants. Among those measures was the return of a visa requirement for Mexican nationals, following a surge of asylum claims coming from that country. As Touria Izri explains, the documents show how that issue also quickly became a problem for U.S.-Canada relations.
In Rome, ancient history met modern-day heat as tourists sought refuge from scorching temperatures by going underground. Europe has been sweltering under an unprecedented heatwave this week with temperatures soaring to record highs in some regions, and communities across Europe have found creative ways to cope with the heat, amid growing concerns over climate change. Neetu Garcha reports.
And finally, as the Olympic flame is set to be lit in Paris for the Olympic Games in a week's time, many are questioning whether the real-world conflicts of Ukraine and Gaza will overshadow the competitive spirit of the games. Nathaniel Dove takes a closer look at the delicate balance between celebrating human achievement and navigating the complexities of global politics.

I think Global hadn’t been the target of (or has figured out how to stop) political bots. If you look at the comments on CTV, it’s clear that it is filled with bots. The racist, nasty, ugly, weird comments there are out of control! (For a while there every other comment was about Trudeau being a ‘tyrant’ 😂).

Over 50 years ago, people were trying to tell forest services that annual burning was necessary for the forests survival and growth. That by putting out the smaller fires, they were creating a recipe for disaster as old growth is not cleared naturally and will build up over time. Guess what? It has built up over time. It's called forestry mismanagement. Sad but not unpredictable and no, the cause is not the oil and gas industry. 🙄

I have been saying that since the 80's, I have been camping since then and have noticed a lot of debris left by logging companies. The prescribed burns actually helped, then that program was terminated. Now a lot of logging companies are either lazy or the government is meddling.

Spare us the Conservative science & evidence denial. CDN wildfire expert Mike Flannigan has stated, "the increase in area burned in Canada is a direct result of human caused climate change. The area burned has doubled in Canada since the 1970s as a result of warming temperatures.” There is an overwhelming scientific consensus on human caused climate change (caused by the burning of coal, oil & gas) - 99.94% vs .06% - a higher scientific consensus than for the theory of gravity. Do you also deny gravity?

Right!!! That fire that happened in the Kelowna area a couple of years ago(2003).....that lightning strike hit near that island but on shore in an area that was designated "au natural" park. What ever classification that was. It was not to be logged or mined - it was how nature intended. It was like that forever. Not good enough to make a real park out of it as it was too rugged and too many gulleys. Jack pine(short squat trees was there). When lightning strikes it was picked up by Penticton weather tower. Most times fire will start and quickly go out on its own. That is usual. THIS TIME because it was in a gulley and a slight breeze was blowing away from the lake up the gulley, the fire stayed lite and spread up the gulley. . So there had never been a fire there, no forestry work done there Not even campfires got out of hand because it was just bushland. Nobody wanted to camp there. Maybe it took out 600 homes? Hard to remember, Mine was NOT one of them. Even MARS waterbomber was deployed once or twice. I scoped out the fire zone after the fire was out by rain. I kind of knew the area as being a place I don't want to visit again-so boring. . There were no houses, any made out of aluminum siding, they were GONE...the fire was so spotty. Here a house is gone and out in the field next door, say 75 feet, a plywood shed still stands. I went to the forest and there were numerous gopher holes(which I figured were tree roots) The fire was that hot that it burnt the roots underground. No blackened trees standing(like Smoky the Bear commercials). There was nothing. No blackened logs, only white ash. I went into a former subdivision....many houses were gone and many still stood unscathed. No rhyme or reason. The reason is the way the wind blew as it went up the gulley. . I was more amazed by the number of underground fires that were happening. So many gopher tunnel holes. . People built there again . Then the same happened on the West Side of Okanagan Lake in 2023 with 30MPH wind blowing up the valley. Many homes lost there and Lake Okanagan Resort(20 miles away). That has been there for over 30 years. . So it happens when it happens(maybe once in your lifetime)

Warmer and dryer is more conducive to fire no matter the source. Pretending that all fires are arson is a bit childish. Lightning, power lines, thrown cigarettes, etc. are far more likely to cause a fire if... warm and dry. But golly, we have to hear from the people who thought only arsonists started fires.

Canada needs to change its immigration. Those who came in the last 2 years on student visas should be deported. Anyone who immigrated in the last 2 years, from problematic countries should be deported. Training for post secondary or upgrading should be more affordable for our own citizens. Job ads that are offering different priorities or higher wages based on pro-immagrant criteria should be a human rights violation. And made illegal.

Can that be totally criticized? There is not the resources to fight all wildfires, and often small fires do not amount to much. Might burn for a few days and then start to fizzle, depending on what the weather does. Sometimes wildfires burn _AWAY_ from populated areas, thus not having much need of suppression. I think that they fight too many wildfires. What does it matter that a wildfire is becoming really large, if it is out in remote wilderness? I thought it is going to burn sooner or later anyway?

Funny thing about "wildfire insurance", like ":flood" and ":earthquake" insurance. The only people that want those are the ones in high risk areas and, ergo. must pay high risk insurance rates. Just remember insurance companies operate to make profit, not to pay out more money than they bring in. GOVERNMENT insurance is a different animal. P.S. the average "burn cycle (years between forest fires), BEFORE Europeans came, was between 10 and 20 years. Now we put out fires which increases the amount of fuel available increases which makes fires harder to extinguish. Vicious circle, for sure.

Many people have to drive to work, else they can not work there, and that is very bad for the economy if people are limited to "walking distance" for their jobs. It also penalizes large families who need larger vehicles. Yet large families help to increase the human life, and loving parents or people with faith in God, tend to have more children. Many areas are far too remote to justify costly wildfire suppression, better to let more remote areas burn naturally, run their course. Whatever is a "fire retardant missile"? That will do nothing against a fire-front that is miles or dozens of miles across. Like trying to pee on the fire. It is not going to make a difference.

Climate change is about extreme weather events happening more often than usual. It's not necessary to believe everything that climate change activists say because they tend to exaggerate in the same way that climate change deniers do. That doesn't mean that we should not make an effort to look after the planet in reasonable ways. There is plenty of middle ground between climate apocalypse and climate change. The properties lost to floods and fires have to be rebuilt. Some insurance companies in the United States are not renewing homeowner policies in riskier areas. Since we're going to pay a price, wouldn't it make more sense to spend that money on mitigating climate change instead? Even if you don't directly suffer from the storms, you will notice the increase in food prices.

There’s a difference between climate and weather: Weather fluctuates day in, day out, whereas climate refers to long term trends-and the overall trend is clearly and indisputably a warming one.

@@bronco1199 It actually doesn't matter what you and I believe. Just like science was right about acid rain and the ozone layer, both of which were solved by science, science is right about fossil fuels and climate change. Natural consequences (drought and severe storms) will be the unfortunate result of not taking action to save the planet.

It's not like flipping a switch. It took time to cause the damage. It will take time to reverse the damage. The carbon tax rewards those who use less energy. For example, the mass transit user pays less carbon tax and the guy who drives a big truck pays more. Both get the same rebate. That seems both fair and reasonable.
