Oh oh! I know the reason for Brits being good at playing Bad guys! The reason is Shakespeare. See, in America, the finest actors want to make it big in Hollywood. Historically, this meant playing the leading man. The action hero. The guy whose name was biggest on the poster. In Britain though, the best actors *always* do Shakespeare, especially when training. And in Shakespeare, the best roles, the best monologues, are the villains. Richard III. King Claudius. Iago. Macbeth. Edmund the Bastard. Shylock. So, when the transition from stage to screen is made, American actors always wanted the best hero parts. But British Actors were perfectly fine playing the bad guy. This didn't happen every time of course, but it happened enough that the British Accent became associated with "Bad Guy" in Hollywood, and became a trope to itself, to the point that in Hollywood, they'd begin to seek out British Actors to play the villain, hoping it would make the villain sound more villainous. Thus, it continues to this day.

The Brits still have an apprenticeship for acting. As a result, you get finely tuned actors that are eons above American actors who are typically chosen for their appearance and THEN trained to become an actor. That's why there are so many 'one (or two) hit wonders' in American films (I am speaking from the late 80s onward here). a select few go to the Actors Studio but even then, talent rises to the top. Most British or Irish actors you see on television / movies are talented because learned their craft BEFORE they auditioned.

Fun Fact: Oxford University is _older_ than the Aztec civilization. The originating Aztec city of Tenochtitlán was founded in 1325, and ended in 1519, whereas Oxford University opened its doors in 1096 and has been going continuously to this day. And yet Aztec ruins are dug up today and put in museums in dedicated exhibits, as if it's ancient history (which it's not, really, it's far more modern than people realise) - yet we don't really consider Oxford University as something ancient despite being older.

The English ain't too shabby either, the computer you're using right now to access the World Wide Web, the first website, and the first web browser were English inventions, the light bulb, the electrical motor, vaccines and the discovery of immunology and antibiotics. We also have the theory of evolution, Isaac Newton is perhaps one of the most important mathematicians to have lived, English scientists also revealed the double helix of DNA and hydrogen gas. Our crowning glory however is of course our wonderful language and we all made that and we're still making it and that's fantastic, most of the time.

Great reaction James! I see you’ve got a few comments re the difference between UK, GB and England. Lots of people use UK and GB interchangeably and most people don’t mind too much - BUT if someone is referring to ‘England’ and they actually mean GB/UK then we (in the rest of the UK) really don’t like that! Lol! Northern Ireland is the only country excluded from GB, it’s part of the UK. However, the UK has lots of smaller islands around it too, eg Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkney Islands etc and these all fall under GB too! Interesting fact re Oxford and Cambridge given the comedy reactions you’re doing - Jimmy Carr went to Cambridge and Al Murray went to Oxford! Lots of our comedians are really intelligent and went to one or the other - John Cleese, Stephen Fry, Hugh Lawrie, David Baddiel, Rowan Atkinson, Mel and Sue (just off the top of my head - there are probs loads more I’m missing!) Oxford and Cambridge are obviously in England, but Scotland also has some fantastic universities too; Glasgow (where I went lol), Edinburgh, Aberdeen, St Andrews etc. This video was quite interesting overall, but the last segment about Music triggered me slightly!😂 So, Stormzy introduced grime and is leading the charge?!😂 I understand why he said this as Stormzy’s first album was the first ‘grime’ album to go to nr 1 in the UK, but that was in 2017! I understand that he is the most successful uk rap artist to be huge overseas but he’s no ‘pioneer’ of the genre. Skepta, Wylie, Tinchy, Kano, Dizzee, Giggs, Ghetts etc. have been around for 20+ years.

"The United kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" (The UK for short) refers to "Great Britain" (The actual main island itself), which consists of England, Wales and Scotland, (but which are all seperate countries with their own cultures, laws and languages, especially in Wales). And on a seperate island, there is Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK), and the rest of the island of Ireland (ROI, or "Republic of Ireland) is "Ireland", a completely different country altogether, which is not part of the UK, and still part of the E.U., and trades in Euros. As a general rule for, if in doubt, always say "The UK" or "British". There's nothing more infuriating to the Welsh, Scots and NI than being refered to as "English", or "in England". We're all brothers, but we all have unique historical cultures, and we proudly defend them, resulting in what we call "banter".

For clarification, England is a country within Great Britain. Great Britain is England Scotland and Wales only. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (which is the full name) adds (as the name implies) Northern Ireland. So England is one country Great Britain is three and the United Kingdom (which is the shortened version of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) is four countries.

Ok, so for the difference between the UK, England and Great Britain you can think of it like this: "England" is one of four countries that make up the UK (the other three being Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). For simplicity lets say they're like the individual states of the US - capable of enacting their own laws - to an extent - in their own parliaments (that you can think of as state senates). England's parliament sort of acts like DC in that laws that are passed there generally apply to the other three countries too, but laws passed in - say - the Sennedd (Wales' parliament) only apply to Wales, and so on. "Great Britain" is the name of the island that Scotland, Wales, and England are on, whereas the fourth country is on the island of Ireland alongside the independent nation of the Republic of Ireland (when people say they're Irish, they usually mean that they're from the Republic of Ireland - though some Northern Irish might call themselves simply "Irish" rather than "Northern Irish" too, usually - but not necessarily exclusively - if they dislike being part of Britain and think Northern Ireland should unify with the Republic). So, in summary: "England" is the name of one country in the union - the most populous one. You can think of it like our equivalent of a "state". "Great Britain" is the name of the island that Scotland, England, and Wales are on. You can think of it sort of as the equivalent of 'mainland' continental US (i.e. excluding Hawaii much like the term Great Britain excludes Northern Ireland). "UK" is the name of the union itself and is the proper name for the country. You can think of it as equivalent to the USA (i.e. all 50 states not just the mainland ones). Though in fairness we tend to use Britain (without the 'Great' part) and UK fairly interchangeably even here, so either is fine in day-to-day conversation. Referring to the entire country as "England" though is all but guaranteed to annoy the Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Irish, however, so it's best to avoid doing that. That's the equivalent for me referring to the US as whole as "New York" or "California" - it's gonna annoy people from other states, especially those that don't like New York or California very much. None of that is 100% accurate as an analogy, but its close enough that you're in the right ball park.

Shamans Bridge explained the UK Britain thing perfectly. Each of the 4 countries are usually called the Home Nations. However the English as opposed to Scots, Welsh and N. Irish, we are often referred to as Brits, particularly by Americans. E.g. the British scientist Isaac Newton (he was English) but James Clerk Maxwell is always called (correctly) Scottish, but he was also British. The Scots etc. have managed to keep hold of their core identity whereas the English are usually called Brits. It's understandable because to a foreigner it must be confusing. Even the English are confused. Some of us call ourselves English, some answer "I'm British". The other, much smaller, countries almost always call themselves Welsh, Scottish etc. This is probably because of their relative size. The population of England is 57 million, Scotland 5 million, Wales 3 million, NI 2 million. This is probably why they are keen not to be mixed up with "bossy big brother". A Scotsman's official nationality is British, same as all others on these islands. We all have a British passport, there are no English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish passports. The front cover says "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". The reason for the word "and" is historical, I wont go into that. And don't get me started on devolution and parliamentary representatives. The Home Nations have MPs in the London (British) Parliament and get to contribute to the laws which affect the English, but there are no English MPs in any of the Home Nation's parliaments. Again, a consequence of the English being the biggest, richest, much the most powerful brother. There is English-spcific Parliament. It doesn't really matter because English MPs heavily outnumber all the others. Hope this helps.

Great Britain is literally the big island. If you include the smaller islands (Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Isle of Skye,…) the collection is the British Isles. England is the main part of the big island, with Wales on the West, and Scotland in the North of the island. England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland used to be independent kingdoms. Wales was annexed by England in 1284, but became officially united with England under Henry 8th in 1536. In 1603, the English royal line died out. The closest relative who could inherit the crown was King James 6th of Scotland. So, he became James 1st of England, uniting the two kingdoms. In 1707 the union between England and Scotland was made official and became permanent.

@@SimplySavageReactions Nope 😅 The usurper Royal family are German. The original Britons are the Ancestors of the Welsh - The Brythoniaid - before the millions of invasions to skew the truth 😂 The King is King of England and the UK. Not King of Britain. The UK is not a country. It is a political alliance between Britain and Northern Ireland. Most think it's a country. It is basically a piece of paper. Britain is the island, host to three countries. The reason you get confused is because of videos like the one you just watched, where the narrator does not understand fully that Britain does not mean England. They were indoctrinated through schooling to believe what they do because history is always changed by the invaders. You may be interested to know that the only official language of Britain is Welsh - because they are the indigenous peoples. English cannot be an official language because England doesn't have a parliament! It is a UK Government. English is a defacto language - but most English people will fight you over this fact because they are ignorant of the truth. This video should really have been about influential English - NOT Britain. Sad fact - most think Britain is England and we all have English as our first language. It's propaganda that all three countries are increasingly becoming more tired of. Just as more are becoming more and more tired of the ridiculous royal family that we have to give our money to, to support their sickenning lifestyle, along with all the hangers on. Long comment 😅 sorry! But the propaganda and ignorance is infuriating. Most Britons don't even know a fraction of their own history!
