Alberta man says peeling paint on his Dodge Ram truck clearly "not tough enough"

An Alberta man is challenging Dodge Ram’s “tough” branding after he said the paint on his 2018 pickup truck is peeling off in huge pieces.
Wade Adams, of Okotoks, said he started noticing paint problems with his 2018 Ram 1500 after a spring snowfall.
“I was sweeping that snow off my roof, and I noticed a piece of paint - it was a sizable piece,” he said.
What started as just a few pieces, he said, quickly grew into almost the entire roof.
“So, the paint actually peels to the side,” he said. “Lifts right off and it peels right up to the metal. There is no paint left on it. There is no primer.”
Adams took his vehicle back to South Trail Chrysler, where he had bought the truck new just a few years back. He said he was told his corrosion warranty had expired and there was nothing that could be done. The dealership did escalate his claim, but it was denied.
It was also denied by manufacturer Stellantis.
“It’s kind of a shame that that’s what we’ve gotten to,” Adams told Global News. “You can spend $60K on a vehicle and you get a vehicle that’s not worth what it used to be.

I wonder what date it was made, I wonder if the truck started production and then sat on the line for a day during the holidays or something and got a very small surface corrosion over the entire body and then after vacation when every one returned it was finished with the surface corrosion then not allowing proper bonding

If they admit fault in this guy’s case it will open them up to thousands of other claims that they’ve probably declined. So it seems like “why don’t they just pay 3k to paint this truck and solve the bad press?” No brainer decision, but their lawyers have probably calculated admitting fault with this vehicle would be a slippery slope especially because this isn’t that old of a truck. It’s a similar reason big box stores hate hiring security at one problem store, they are afraid they’ll need security at all their stores if they admit they don’t provide good security at one store. It’s also why they like to blame employee theft, that way they can claim they don’t need security on the floor in a bad neighborhood because it’s actually the employees stealing lol.

@@alexburke1899 $3K? that would have been the cost maybe 20 years ago. $3K won't even touch the cost of the paint, primer, let alone disassembly, media blasting, and the time to properly repaint and assemble the truck. Then they are liable for "x" amount of time to warranty that repaint. Prior experience with molar paint issues in the late 1990's, with bad paint issues they gave owners at that time options to repaint the trucks, be given a new truck, or a buyout. Saw a lot of trucks get disassembled, sand blasted, repainted, and shipped through the vehicle auction where I worked at in the 1997-1999 time frame. Cluster fawk doesn't even begin to describe this.

Its like 5 years old. Who knows if he left it outside in the blazing sun every day and parked under a water spout. Paint does NOT stay sealed and hundreds of tiny metal shards embed in the paint as you drive from brake dust to everything else out there. If you dont clay bar and wax or seal regularly your paint looks like microscopic swiss cheese. Dont matter the car brand.

@@BG-bx4ey looks like the primer pealed with the paint (bottom of paint chips was light colored) as someone mentioned below they probably painted the coat too thick which made it less flexible and it buckled and peeled from the metal expansion/contraction.

Autobody painter here. A huge issue with a select few of these rams is they were repainted multiple times in the factory. This causes the paint to be super thick and and it basically just self destructs after some years. One thing a person can do is buy a mil-gauge (it measures paint thickness) and test the vehicle before buying it. We just had a 2014 in the bodyshop here that had to be stripped all the way to bare metal and resprayed.

Im a painter as well. When I saw how thick that peeling was I thought the same thing. Thats super thick paint, almost looks skim coated. I remember back in the mid 90s Chrysler had a bad batch of vehicles where the paint flaked off in big chunks but it didn't curl like this mans truck. I've never seen this generation of ram do that though

There was no filler on that body work that they showed. That was a failed factory paint job. A step was missed or something was on the body that stopped the paint from bonding.

If more customers complained they had same issue then dodge would probably cover it under a warranty issue. Right now wranglers have the most problems on the doors where the hinges are and hood issues. Paint bubbling around the hinge and under the hood jambs. Due from the aluminum and how the corrosion starts.

It's not just Ram, it's ALL brands. I worked at a GM dealership when they had a huge paint peeling issue and were paying to have whole vehicles re-painted. It was the new water based primer that was at fault. They also get re-sprayed on the assembly line if there is a flaw in the paint, it gets run thru the paint booth again without stripping so the paint gets really thick. This truck had hail damage that got repaired. You can see the dents in the darker rusted areas. Lawyer up and push the issue.

I had two Hondas start to peel like this on the front edge of the hood from stone chipping. One was a 1979 prelude and the other a 1990 accord. Both were three years old and had more than 50k miles on the clock. Both were Canadian models in Canada. Both were black. I went in for a routine oil change and the service manager asked me about each of their condition and I told him I planned to get each one painted in the spring. He told me to give him a little time to talk to Honda and he would get back to me. Within two weeks he called me to bring each one in for repair at no charge. I did, and when each were done, I went back to collect the car, and to my surprise, each one was totally repainted and looked brand new. The body shop even removed all the chrome window trim to paint the car so there was no overspray anywhere! Needless to say, I was delighted. I’ve been a loyal Honda customer ever since, from 1979 to present, 2024.

I have been a paintless dent repair technician / Craftsman for 31 years. I literally got started in September of 1993. There were two guys in Central Indiana doing it when I started, one has passed and the other one retired. I know what I'm talking about. I'm going to say in the last seven or eight years, I cannot explain what has happened to Chrysler paint. It was just as good as anyone else's back in the day, but now, even a small door ding that isn't very deep will make that paint split and Flake like nothing I've ever seen when I repair a dent. And if you're talking about Challengers where they pick up the dense right on that body line, you can barely push on the metal and that paint will crack. I literally have to take a heat gun and get everything super hot to get it to hang on. I was doing some very light hail damage on a Jeep Grand Cherokee about 3 months ago, and hail damage almost never causes me to break paint. Ever. But just pressing on the smallest of dents caused a break in the paint that would star. I couldn't believe it. And it was actually the factory paint job. I can't imagine why Chrysler can't figure this out. First it was their transmissions for decades, now, they can't seem to come up with the same kind of paint every other manufacturer uses

No. A dealership would not paint a whole new vehicle from the manufacturer. If there was something wrong , they would return it. The problem probably lies with the primer. Either there isn't any, or the primer didn't adhere to the metal properly.

Same happened to my truck, 2017 Ram 1500, except it was my back bumper. Went to the stealer ship, they denied my claim, saying I didn’t bring it back for a one year inspection, (I payed for the extra paint protection) so I wrote a google review about it. The stealership called me to correct the bumper as long as I took my review down on google. LOL then after it was fixed a year later was rear ended and learnt they had put a restriction in all body work voiding the warranty. Can confirm chrysler is a joke.

2014-2019 (Gen2) definitely have issues, but are preventable if you understand the emissions components are the culprit. Remove said emissions problems and the issues go away. 2020+ (Gen3) seem much more reliable, however even they will have some emissions problems. Especially if you're using them as a grocery getter and not hauling with it enough. Modern diesels must be worked otherwise they will get clogged up faster.

i had a 1993 Dodge pickup that had a similar paint peeling problem. i asked for warranty coverage, was denied, escalated to the regional customer satisfaction team, it was not resolved. the paint should not peel off of a vehicle like that. Dodge's lack of support/accountability showed me that i needed to buy from a different manufacturer and i have.

We had the same issue with our Chrysler minivan. They use cheap primer and fail to prep the surface so the paint does not adhere to the metal. Our paint peeled off in sheets. Nice to see they still have not ever corrected this issue even after 20 years.🤯

Dude I have a client who ended up getting thier cabin stained by someone else and they got a company to come out and do it. They got charged 4x what I would charge and the guys came and pressure washed and stained the same day causing mildew to form in the stain and causing their whole cabin to turn charred black. I couldn't beleive it when I went to open thier cabin for them the next year and refinished all of the cedar siding and stuff for them that summer... I felt bad because I didn't have time for them the previous summer so I just charged them what I normally would and knocked off about 60 hours of work to refinish the siding.

That means the steel was pre-corroded before manufacturing. Similar things happened with the Alfa Sud. The bodies where left out during rain and the steel rusted after after the paint was applied. That means Dodge is making major mistakes during the production process. The roof probably got wet while the raw body was transported and before it got painted.

As someone who done half a corrosion control and protective coatings apprenticeship, that rust has only started since the paint come off. And junky steel is FAR worse than what that is so it's well smelted steel. I have seen stuff you wouldn't believe. Salt water corrosion has a particular look to it and it even occurs on galvanising.

Chrysler does not use zinc coated metal, ford and GM can have a rock chip and it will stay rust free a long time, it’s a thin layer of zinc which is like galvanizing. Now fords are aluminum since 2016 and GM pretty much is all aluminum even though they tore ford for it they have slowly started making panels in it.

This is a super common issue with stellantis vehicles. They are literally built to last just past the warranty period, and i am always shocked that people keep on buying them despite all the available information online.

I work in the automotive industry, and I swear people keep on buying there vehicles because of either the image, because they have poor credit, and mostly because stellantis marks up there vehicles to discount them. People always thinking that they are getting a great deal, but if the vehicle was overpriced to begin with, then any discount isn't really a good deal. Then they complain that there trade value is too low when they inevitably try to trade it in, once they realize they are off warranty and own a POC. You got a big discount when you bought it, now your getting a even worse resale value when it is time to get ride of it.

I had a Ford that had more electrical problems that I ever thought were possible. These issues are far from just one manufacturer. Isn't even just vehicles. Corporate greed is being allowed to side step quality control while allowing loop holes in warranty. At least the US has lemon laws to protect consumers. Canadians have nothing. I feel for you brother! I bought a 2018 dodge ram sport. Never missed a service, only serviced by the dodge dealership in my town and I was handed a strike of bad luck or was screwed as well. I loved my truck! Never had as much as a hiccup with it! Not a pin dot of oil on the drive way, it was the best truck I ever had! All of a sudden I take it in for its service and I’m told it needed a bunch of work, mostly all wear and tear parts, cost me 2700 dollars… next thing I know maybe 3 weeks later I’m sitting at Burger King eating lunch and my truck red lines, only for 5 seconds! I shut it off right after I heard the alarm! I let it sit for 25 mins, checked under the hood, everything looked good! I turned it on and it started normal, and regulating heat normal. Engine sounded great! I drove it to the dealership right away which was 1 km from where I was. They diagnosed it as a thermostat and needed coolant flush! Another 1100 dollars. I pick it up that night and two weeks later I’m driving it to the dealership again as it started running like garbage! I’m told from them the head gasket is gone! 7200 dollars plus taxes to fix! I decided to buy a new truck! What’s sad about all of this is my truck ran perfect, I only got to enjoy 89,000kms on this truck as it was a demo when I bought it as it only had 13000km on it. My trucks engine went bad with only 102.000kms on it! Never once did anyone tell me I could contact Dodge to escalate my issue! I have only purchased Dodge products since I was 22! This one stings so bad! My warranty was up in Dec 31, 2023 and like I said I only had 102,000km on the truck! I asked the dealership if Dodge would help me since it was so little over my warranty and they said they would not! I find it repulsive and a massive slap in the face that I paid so much for my truck and have paid so much on Dodge products and they couldn’t/ wouldn’t support a life long supporter! It makes me sick! Strike two for me, one more strike I will never support Dodge again and make sure no one does in my family/ friend circle!

Brand new ram at 20 k miles my whole front end needed replacing. At 30k both wheel hub bearing went and new front brakes. 50k miles needed another whole front end put in the truck with ball joints joints and differential. My truck is always very clean ,waxed etc and at 60 miles the rear bumper rotted off. I ended up selling it and buying a Jeep wrangler rubicon and this thing is a bigger p.o.s then the ram..I am life long mopar guy and still have a couple old roadrunners that I love to death but I will never buy another modern vehicle from that company again..

You do realize most repair shops, and especially the dealerships will either skip the work and charge you for it so they have more work, or purposely destroy your vehicle so you would buy a new one right there? You have to watch them work or have a trusted private mechanic.

Agreed. Something is off here. The paint appears to be much too thick. I wonder if the affected areas have been overpainted. I heard stories of vehicles getting damaged during initial delivery to the dealership and then hastily overpainted before being put on the sales lot.

Was a hail damaged truck that was repaired...you can tell by the paint! Alberta has dealers advertising hail damaged vehicles every year,watch for it...Some dealer bought it cheap, repaired it and sold it and either failed to tell this guy or the guy claims its "new".

It's very unlikely this was original undamaged paint. From the patterns in the metal it's apparent water reached the sheet metal at a few points and then the rust radiated outwards. It could be as something as simple as rock chips. Since the damage is on the roof of a truck, the owner probably can't see the damage without climbing into the box or onto a ladder.

My guess is the vehicle was in a hail storm on the lot or in the purchasers possession. Paint cracked, water got in there and the freezing temperatures causing this to happen. Seen it happen with my commuter.

I bought my first and last new ram in '05. Had to rebuild the top end @ 40,000 miles. New driveshafts, power steering hoses, leaking waterpump, windshield wiper switch, 3 sets of brake rotors. Pull up to a stoplight and it would just shutdown. Never flashed any codes. Pulled into my driveway, the next morning it wouldn't move. Transmission went out overnight. All happened with less than 50k miles. Junk

Uhm...I had a new Toyota pickup truck that had rust on the seams of the bed in less than 24 months. Driven in a no salt environment - Vancouver - and very well cared for. No rock chips, no body damage but rusting on both sides. One experience - whether your good one or my bad one - does not indicate what the average owner will experience.

Ram on the other hand denied my paint claim at 18,000 miles on a new 2500. They're shady as hell, in fact they are currently embroiled in two RICO suits (racketeer influenced corrupt organization) regarding Ram trucks.
