@@esparda07 It's more likely that sometimes she has to search for the appropriate English word she wants. She doesn't do it in her French interviews, I mean there are still some if when anyone speaks. The likely cause of this is due to when you speak whatever your native tounge is you just speak it. However, when you speak in another dialect... your brain knows what it wants to say in language 1, but to spit it out in language 2 it has to not only speak it but translate on the fly. This makes a bit of a third issue as a direct translation might not make any sense, so then your brain has to go hunting in language 2 to find a synonym. And listening to her talk, her English is far from on parity to her French.

As a Canadian, we need to get away from this notion of building in Canada… we don’t spend enough to sustain this method. We’re building new ships at Irvin, then it’ll be 50 yrs before we do it again.. we are not the US that needs to pump out 30-60 ships a year. This always ends up costing us way more and takes way longer. It’s a huge part of why our procurement process is a mess. I would rather buy proven off the shelf products at a fixed cost with a contract that has harsh penalties for delays, etc. Look at South Korea or Japan for example, they’re excellent ship builders, even the US purchased 2 Frigates and is considering changing their laws to allow ships to be built overseas for the US Navy. The P-8 Poseidon is a recent good example. It’s tested, comes with a fixed cost and can be built and delivered in the time it would have taken us to build the plant alone. We either need to spend 10x on our defence budget to sustain the industry, or buy off the shelf and use the savings elsewhere.
@truthseekerodinson50944 күн бұрын
During WW2 Canada's military production was incredible. We had a population of some 12M at the time and cranked out ships, tanks, artillery, planes etc. The notion that we couldn't do the same with a 41M population (while SKorea is at 51M) is defeatist in many ways at least in a medium to long-term sense. Let's be real on the amount of Artic waters which we claim sovereignty over and we'll come to the answer that Canada probably does need to spend 10X at least in that area. I'm not oblivous to the challenges Canada faces (watch Perun's video on Canada's Defense Strategy and procurment boondoggles; and he does discuss SKorea shipping) but we need to get over this attitude of mediocricity. Went to Spain last year and took a train from Madrid to Barcelona at 300km/h,....noticed that Madrid was the size of Toronto GTA while Barcelona was the size of Montreal. Yet,...high speed trains are "infeasible" for Canada.

@ Yes, we did. My first tour was a career highlight, due to the quality of the people with whom I had the privilege of working, the results that we achieved, and the tremendous support of the Canadian populace and (until near the end) the Harper government. Huge improvements in the situation in the Canadian area had been made in the interval between my tours. Then, our government lost interest and we packed up and left halfway through that tour. I developed my great respect for the Afghan people in the 1980s, as they forced the Soviet Army out of their country. Following the defeat of the Taliban, four million Afghans went home - the largest reverse migration in human history. Most had spent years in refugee camps in Pakistan and Iran, but many went back from comfortable and safe lives that they had forged in Western countries. The governor of Kandahar Province during my time there, Tooryalai Wesa, was in a high position in one of the universities in Vancouver, but returned to help rebuild his country when asked by Hamid Karzai - they were old friends. He did so at huge personal risk, yet survived several attempts on his life. The first female Deputy Police Chief of Kandahar City was assassinated just before I arrived the first time. The target on her back was huge, being both a police official and a woman. Another Afghan, undaunted, stepped into her position immediately. I cannot recall how many combat deaths we sustained during my first tour, but we only sustained one during my second, and that was avoidable. Our area was quite stable by then. One of my undying dissatisfactions with the Harper government was our departure, on the cusp of success. The other was his cynical milking of firearms owners for votes, while ultimately failing us completely. Those, though, pale in comparison to Trudeau's absolute failure to get all of those who loyally supported us, as interpreters and in other roles, and their families out when fellow-incompetent Joe Biden triggered the complete and sudden collapse.

Kudos to the interviewer who didn't just let the general off easy with her insufficient response. Its clear the general is afraid to respond truthfully about the situation since its politicians who decide her fate. Its the same in the US. Its the system they created.

We need leadership who are not navel-gazing, heads-in-the-clouds sorts. This is the most significant threat to Canadian sovereignty since the last war. If we cannot protect our land mass, we have to anticipate that others will ignore our wishy-washy glacial approach to protecting ourselves and simply walk in and take what they want.

Between the Liberal budget cuts, the woke policies driving personnel away from the military and the extremely inefficient procurement programs of the CAF there needs to be a complete overhaul of Canada's military leadership and government before we see any improvements.
@colleenmonfross42837 күн бұрын
It would be great to see Canada return to a force in readiness for its own defense. I think too many rely on the US for their defense, which puts too much burden on them. Each country needs to contribute equally to NATO and to their own national defense. We must all be strong separately in our own right so we can be a powerhouse together.

The west is short on 155 mm shells, Canada could build manufacturing capacity for 10,000,000 shells per year, then maintain it by making 2,000,000 shells per year. Canada would make herself critical to the alliance. Just a thought. 9:42

I really can’t take a woman in a position like this seriously. She might be very smart and capable, but our current society has a tendency to promote people based on their diversity and inclusion check marks. It’s a sad time for women in the weatern world.

That is a sick Trump based statement. These military personell have devoted their lives to fight for our country and no matter what gender they are that has to be honored. Both men and women in the military have lost their lives fighting to keep our freedoms. Your statement is very offensive. If it were your wife or mother or sister putting her life on the line to save your country il bet you would change your pregadist thoughts.

This is the core decay in Canadian governance. This clever, probably well qualified person, DID NOT STATE A SINGLE CONCRETE THING THAT WAS GETTING DONE OR HAD BEEN COMPLETED. It's all org speak..."We've been focussed on leveraging....we are modifying our approach..." And its the same with no improved fast rail ever actually getting built, or pipelines that should have been in place years ago. It's all talk, and no achievement.

when I was in the CF in the 90's, we were sent to the US for courses and UN deployment training, utilizing their bases and training areas. If troop housing and training locations are an issue, why not partner with the US - it definitely would show Trump that we are 'actually' doing something. Furthermore, in wartime, we trained troops in camps on indigenous and crownlands. Where are all of the 'smart' people in the CF now, are they all politicians?

Depending almost solely on the United States for defense is foolish as the US will do so only until it doesn't meet their goals or the American public get tired of doing so. Ask the countries of South Vietnam or Afghanistan how that policy worked out for them, opps, you can't anymore as they no longer exist. Countries like Israel or the Ukraine that step up and look after themselves fair much better. Canada better wake up to this fact before it is too late
