I received a tea cake for the first time today from a Chinese student of mine as a gift. I love tea but I haven't tried a Puerh tea cake before and don't know what to do with it. Glad I saw this video. Thanks for teaching.

Teabags are meant to be steep once, loose leaves can be steep a lot more time!

Great video! At the beginning you mention it is good to break up a cake if you plan on drinking it in a year or two to get a more even brew. Does this hold true for all tea equally? Fresh sheng pu'er, shou pu'er, and dian hong?
@globalteahut4 жыл бұрын
Yes, breaking up the cake you are going to drink and putting it in a ceramic jar for a month, then start drinking, is the ideal. You may not be able to do this, due to lack of space or jars, but it is the ideal. A half-broken cake is neither ideal for storage, nor for drinking...

What kind of jar would you store that in. Like an airtight kilner jar?
@globalteahut4 жыл бұрын
A clean ceramic jar is best (clay or porcelain for example). Puerh needs to breathe so the jar should have a lid but not be completely airtight. We will make a follow-up video explaining it in more detail soon.

I’m a newbie. How much tea is used for a brew?
@globalteahut4 жыл бұрын
That depends on the size of your teapot and how many people you are serving and in what brewing style. 10g may be an average? may be....

@@globalteahut thanks. By the way. Do I need to use filtered water for all of this? Or just standard chlorinated stuff out of the tap?
@globalteahut3 жыл бұрын
@@bradhouston4734 water is the cheapest way to improve all your tea. Each cup or bowl is 99% water ! Try experimenting with filtered waters and different bottled waters as well. We all have to find that convenience to quality sweet spot!

Bro who cares about whole tea leaves it will still taste the same
@globalteahut3 жыл бұрын
Actually, bits and whole leaves steep very differently. Of course, don't take our word for it. Try a steeping just of bits and one just of whole leaves. You will see they taste very different, steep at different speeds and to different strengths.... There is no way to break a cake without creating some broken bits and a mix is usually ideal for steeping, but trying to keep the leaves whole while breaking is still a good approach we think. But if it doesn't matter to you then break away and stay happy and full of tea!
