We have a similar situation in Uruguay, where a city is traversed by the Uruguay-Brazil border. One avenue, in the middle of the city, crossing it from east to west, separates Uruguay from Brazil. The southern part of the city is located in Uruguayan territory and it's called Rivera, whilst the northen part is in Brazil and it's called Santana do Livramento. Of course, the border does not divide the city in two perfect halves, as the Brazilian side is more populated than the Uruguayan one. Rivera has a population of 64,465 whilst Santana do Livramento has 82,513 for a total of 146,978 people. It is, in fact, a conurbation which can exceed 200,000 inhabitants if we take into account the whole metropolitan area (Santana do Livramento is still more populated if we take this data into account). Interesting fact: the Brazilian and Uruguayan governments agreed on declaring the city's airport (located on Uruguayan soil, in the outskirts of Rivera) as binational, meaning that the flights originating from any Brazilian or Uruguayan city will be considered domestic. For example, if a passenger takes a flight from, say, Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo and his final destination is Santana do Livramento, he'll land on Uruguayan territory (Rivera airport) but won't have to pass through customs or migration as the flight will be considered a domestic one. This will apply to any Brazilian or Uruguayan airline whose flight originates in a Brazilian city and whose passenger(s) final stop is Santana do Livramento. But if that passenger's destination is Rivera instead, then he'll have to do customs and migration as he'll be staying in Uruguay and not in Brazil. Same situation happens (but inversely) on flights originating from any other Uruguayan city. This binationality agreement entered into force last August, after both countries signed it, while at the same time the airport was undergoing a $10+ million investment to expand and modernize it. The renovation project was finished last December. This has made Rivera's airport the only binational one in the whole American continent, and the second in the world (the other one is located in France, and it's shared with Switzerland, as it serves the Swiss city of Basel and the French city of Mulhouse). Sure, some might say that there are other binational airports in the world, but only Rivera's and Basel-Mulhouse's airports are currently de jure binational.

@@SixSkyDiver Yes, a common road and boundary. The boundary goes thru a few lakes westward and then cuts into the St. Lawrence Seaway. With the 911 attacks it did become a focal point, as did all points across the boarder. This occurs frequently in Europe and the border in some places goes thru the middle of a house. In those cases the country the house is officially in is determined which side of the line the front door is on. This being such a small town the people probably thought of themselves as citizens of both countries.

I do not know how to comment my thoughts! We are all americans on this north american contenent. The united states is simply (states of america). Texas, for example is a state of america. What is so wrong about Canada, being a state of america. That is a wonderful thought that we could all share the strength of unity that would provide! Don'tlet callus, human pride stop you from making a great choice. Texas is not only big but a great state. Canada would be the biggest state on the north american continent and a very proud state they would be. It would be an expontential move that would bring a lot of posperity not only to this continent but to the great people of Canada. The border follows the 49th parallel, but it has not always been respected. Today, some buildings straddle it and are used by residents of both countries. One or more roads also overlap it. There are agreements. When you want to access a building common to both countries, it is possible to cross the border inside the building, or outside to enter it and you are then exempt from customs procedures. However, if you import an object, you must then go to customs. For roads, there is also a tolerance, but this tolerance does not apply to pedestrians who would like to walk on the other side of the street. For border residents, these are known and the procedures are simplified, or even exempted. The same goes for farmers who own land on both sides of the border. Apart from this, there are official crossing points and it is obligatory to pass through one of these crossing points. However, one or more of them are not monitored. This is the case of the “northwest corner”. And if you go through one of these crossing points, you then have to go to customs.

The 49th parallel is the border between Canada and the US from Manitoba to BC, but the broder then follows a water border throughout Ontario (rivers, locks and the great lakes). Western Quebec (Montreal area) it's the 45th parallel (nominally) between Quebec, parts of NY, and all of Vermont.

Nope, if you are a US or Canadian citizen you may cross the border visa free! If the neighbors choose to interact and visit each other on their respective sides they must report to the customs and border agents down the block in town in either Stanstead, QC or Derby Line, VT. I’ve been here quite a times and it is a fascinating place! I’ve been to the Haskell Free Library that straddles the border and sat at a table to read a book where my left leg was in the USA with my coffee in my left hand and my right leg in Canada with the book in my right hand. If you ever get the chance, you should visit! :)
