I visited the Strangest Border on Earth in Derby Line, Vermont - A town the US Canada Border splits into 2 countries in the middle of a street!

Beebe Plain, a small village in Derby Line, Vermont, has the unique distinction of being the only place in the world where an International Border splits 1 street down the middle into 2 countries. That street is Rue Canusa (Canusa Ave). Everything south of the yellow median is the United States of America, while everything north, is Stanstead Quebec in Canada.
Derby Line also has many other bizarre legal border crossings and anomalies, such as the Library and Opera House being in both the US and Canada, as well as certain houses being in the USA, while their backyard is in Canada.
Why was the border drawn in such a strange way? And what is life really like for the 700 Americans and 2800 Canadians who live in this fascinating border town? Join me on this epic road trip to find out!

I just moved up to Derby a couple months ago, it's kind of a trip. We've gone up shopping in Sherbrooke and Magog, since it's only about a half hour. I-91 is very light on traffic going north. I was commuting to Rutland 2.5hrs, and the only easy part of that was the last 100 miles on I-91, where I had the highway to myself. Well, and the deer and other critters. Also, my phone welcomes me to Canada occasionally when I walk across my house, and I'm 2 miles away from the border. Lastly, you drove past my house, which was kind of cool to see.

No I was going to sell my house in Baltimore Maryland and move to either the Winterpeg or 27 or so miles south of Winterpeg to a small town called Morris Manitoba Canada and I was told that my Pedigree female German Shepard would be best and less costly and stressful for my dog if I rehomed here or left her with a trusted relative because she would have to be kept in a animal shelter or hospital under quarantine for 4 to 6 months if i brought her with me and this was back in 2000 or 2001but in 2007 or 2008 I was still driving a truck and I was taking a load up through the US and Canadian border and I had this young blonde asked me if I have EVER been arrested and I said NOT since I was in my mid 20's and I'm almost 47 now and she sent me to customs and they were training some new recruits and this young guy around mid 20's came out with 2 chunky blonde trainees who these and this guy says in a rude voice Driver step down out of the truck and I did and as soon as my right foot touched the ground he grabbed my arm and spun me from half way turned around to face him to face back at the side of my truck and shoved me against my truck and says WHAT WERE YOU ARRESTED FOR AND WHEN, so I turned back around to face him and said when I was 17 I was shoved like that by a Baltimore City Cop and I beat the shit out of him and 4 more and 2 civilians in the wrong place at the wrong time so he lost his attitude and told me to follow him inside and I needed to tell his supervisor what I just said so we got in and he gave his supervisor a heads up and I was asked if I had just said that and I said NO I most certainly did no such thing and what he didn't notice was that when he first showed me against the side of my truck his 2 trainees backed away about 15 feet and when said that to him they didn't hear it because if the noise from my truck running and they were back beside my trailer and the tried to get them sat what they heard me say and they said all they heard was 2 trucks running and he got really pissed off and they all went behind the glass enclosure and talked a few minutes and then the supervisor comes out and tells me I to go across to the south side of the lanes ti immigration and he escorts me over and they kept me there for about 2 almost 3 hours and the Big boss in immigration looked up my complete arrest records and they even somehow got my juvenile records from 15 to 17 and I wasn't happy and told him to pound sand and then I got barred from Canada for life and then they decided to let me go to the delivery point and then the north bound scale house pulls me around back and tried to get me for log book violations and I was there for another 2 or 3 hours waiting for their main supervisor for him to go over my log books and then I finally released and I can't make my delivery so I have to stay at the little fuel stop with truck parking area and the sorry SOB had an unmasked cop follow me in the truck stop and parked by the door of the building and sat there AND watched me all night and then followed me back to the delivery and back to the US border and I was told NOT to enter Canada because THEY DON'T ALLOW CRIMINALS IN CANADA. I SAID THANKS FOR THE FAVOR AND LEFT

@@glennredifer688 So sad to hear that story Glenn. I lived in this border town for years on the Canadian side. Too many Canadians have a similar story to yours but, with the US customs. This border BS has screwed many whose families live on both sides. Both countries signed the NAFTA accords which was sold to us as open borders for people living near there. Instead they closed the open roads and got stupid tough on tariffs and trade and custom duties. Now after millions of undocumented Illegals have been allowed to enter both countries in the last 4 years the borders are open to all but the ones with a record for Anything in their distant past! Having crossed the lines 1000"s of times, the worst hassles were Always when either side were "Training" new recruits. BTW you can get a pardon to enter Canada and your Dog only needs an up to date Rabies shot! We love our American friends and Family! Us country folk are apples from the same orchard. Time to stop the division and support all our Veterans. Too many are homeless and in dire need of assistance for PTSD. Same problem both sides of the border. Now Illegals' need to go and homeless need their shelters. We are hoping DJT does the Job! Keep on Trucking!

even if you have dual citizenship you still have to go through customs if you are crossing the border even if that border is of your own country. My father was born in Newport back in the late 40's when my grandparents and his brother & sister were coming back from visiting family in lower NH and traveling back to Sherbrooke. Grandma went into labor and they pulled into the nearest hospital which ended up being Newport. My father ened up a US citizen and they had to do paperwork to make him a Canadian citizen. They ended up moving to NH a couple years later and the whole family became US citizens. I always found it an interesting story that Dad was the first generation born in the US on a technically.

It was a actually a whale watching boat that belonged to a bureaucrats friend who was paid handsomely. They reported it as a solution for the people of Point Roberts to go to doctor appointments and Costco runs. However, depart the Point at 0900 arrive Bellingham at 11. Two buses to get to Costco which allowed about 30 minutes to shop before you had to return on the busses. Then when you arrived at the ferry you were allowed only one item the size of an airline carry on, ridiculous. It was a cash grab for the boat operator

This is ridiculous. The US and Canada should create a 2 mile open zone on each side of the US - Canada Border for Canadian and US residents who live within 2 miles of the Border. Canadians and Americans living in that 2 mile open zone can have an electronic device on their vehicle(s) and a special ID they carry that allows them to travel inside the 2 mile open zone for local Canadian and US residents without having to report to or be hassled by US or Canadian Customs commandos... This way, Canadian and US neighbors who live nearby or even as close as across the street from each other can visit, have activities together, take their children to local parks and pools, and use all of the other local recreation facilities without being hassled by the Border Patrol commandos running around hassling, spying on people with their hidden cameras or trying to arrest local residents. The current situation in this area reminds me of a dumbed down version of the Cold War Berlin Wall....

I live close to Stanstead. I remember the good old days where we didn't need a passport to cross the border. They would ask how many Americans and/or Canadians were in the vehicle. That's it, that's all. It was extremely rare that one got pulled over to have their car searched. 911 changed everything. Before 911 we didn't need passports. Even driving on the USA vs Canadian side of the border wasn't as anal as it is now. I use to go to a summer camp every year in Beebe Plain. Half of the kids were Canadian and the other American, coming as far as Texas. The majority of our border is not secure. It's the largest border between two countries in the world. You don't need to have both languages in Canada btw. As for here in the Eastern Townships, Quebec, it's the same exact geography as Vermont. Lots and lots of hills, mountains and lakes.

I, a Canadian woman old enough to know better, crossed the border on foot illegally from Stanstead to Derby Line, just a few feet from the Haskell library ten years ago, and was picked up by a patrol car within minutes, taken to the American Customs border office in Derby Line where I was told by a very angry customs agent "You are in big trouble". And I was! The story is too long to relate here, but five hours later I was back in Canada, having been VERY lucky that I wasn't fined $5,000 and wouldn't be allowed back in the U.S. for five years! With grandchildren in the U.S., that would have been painful. Rick was right about everything. He was so nice and informative, and so were his friends!
