"Cut flower culture" is a term coined in 1951 by American sociologist of religion and Jewish philosopher Will Herberg. Herberg used the term to describe the spiritual rootlessness of modern European and American societies, saying that the attempt to separate Western civilization's moral principles from their religious context has led to "cut flower culture". Herberg compared cut flowers to modern culture, saying that flowers retain their beauty and fragrance as long as they have vitality from their roots, but eventually die because they lack nutrients and life. Cut-flower ethics is the concept that when an idea is separated from its roots, the manner in which it was developed, it is at great rsk of perishing. could you address this?

“The attempt made in recent decades by secularist thinkers to disengage the moral principles of western civilization from their scripturally based religious context, in the assurance that they could live a life of their own as "humanistic" ethics, has resulted in our "cut flower culture." Cut flowers retain their original beauty and fragrance, but only so long as they retain the vitality that they have drawn from their now-severed roots; after that is exhausted, they wither and die. So with freedom, brotherhood, justice, and personal dignity - the values that form the moral foundation of our civilization. Without the life-giving power of the faith out of which they have sprung, they possess neither meaning nor vitality.” will herberg, judaism and modern man

Ancient Greek ethical (such as by Aristotle) thought could exist _only_ outside of his religion. Ancient Greek philosophers and scientists necessarily had to be religious atheists or agnostics.

Please study confucianism which is secular. Long before modernity the Chinese community are already having human ethic without religion.

Only ethics outside religion, because it allows for a ration evaluation of our actions. Religion prevents this

I agree with "only ethics outside of religion," but religion can fit within deontological ethics.
