I think it's a shame this caliber isn't wildly popular.
@IndicacannaJones7 жыл бұрын
How's it a good thing? If it's popular, the ammo is cheap and we'd have a wide variety of models chambered in it. As of now, we're limited to a handful of selections and the rest we have to hope that someone makes an aftermarket conversion barrel.
@IndicacannaJones7 жыл бұрын
I hope I don't come off too combative, but I've very aware of what's out there, which pistols are chambered in it, and how much the ammo costs. Compared to other chamberings, the price per round and pistol options are very lacking. There's very few that are naturally chambered in it and not a lot more that offer conversions from .40 and 35 cents a round for handgun ammo isn't cheap. I mean, I can't tell you that you need to value popularity over something that is less popular, but at the same time, you can't tell me the firearm selection and ammo cost isn't what it is. Reading this post over, I know, it sounds kind of snotty. You have a favorite place you like to buy ammo from? I use SGAmmo mostly, but I also check www.wikiarms.com/group/357Sig to check out other offerings.

Thanks for the video. An often overlooked cartridge. I bought a 357 Sig Mag for my 357 Sig barrel in my Glock 23. Waste of money as the 40 mags work fine. However I was getting stoppages using the 357 sig mag for 40. So just stick with 40 mags. I also bought a 9mm conversion barrel. For the 23. Had to buy mags of course but did not change the extractor. I’ve put several hundred 9mm through that configuration. Had one stovepipe with cheap ammo. Otherwise no problems. Three guns in one.
@heaterfamily7 жыл бұрын
While it is based on a 10mm auto case shortened and necked down to accept 0.355-inch (9.0 mm) bullets, the .357 SIG cartridge case is slightly longer than .40 S&W by 0.009 in (0.23 mm) to 0.020 in (0.51 mm) total. Most .40 S&W pistols can be converted to .357 SIG by replacing the barrel, but sometimes the recoil spring must be changed as well. Pistols with especially strong recoil springs can accept either cartridge with a barrel change. Magazines will freely interchange between the two cartridges in most pistols. .357 SIG barrel kits have allowed this cartridge to gain in popularity among handgun owners. However, the .357 SIG is loaded to higher pressures than the .40 S&W (the C.I.P. and the SAAMI pressure limits for .40 S&W are 225 MPa and 35,000 psi), and may not be suitable for use in all .40 S&W-chambered pistols due to the increase in bolt thrust.

Just FYI... the Glock 27 recoil is MUCH snappier than the Glock 33. The Glock 33 is a great little gun. The only hesitation I would have is that touching off a 357 sig indoors without hearing protection is probably going to cause some damage where the 40 would be a bit less harmful to the hearing... but if you are worried about that, then the low pressure 45acp is the best for that.

Someone probably mentioned it already, but the Glock .357 Sig series differs from the .40 in that the magazines have a small rib inside them, to guide the nose of the .357 rounds (just makes it more reliable). Also I think the mainsprings were a little bit more robust. But yea, barrel , mags are the only differences.

Folks, if you bother to purchase a gun in this caliber PLEASE use Buffalo Bore or Underwood ammunition PERIOD! Now why do I say this? Because they are the only 2 manufacturers who can consistently achieve 1450-1530fps in this caliber for a 125gr bullet. Remington, Hornady, Federal, Speer, Corbon, Double Tap, etc. all come in around 1300 - 1350fps. So if you want 1300fps, then just shoot 9mm+P+. If you're not shooting the hot 357 Sig loads, then its pointless to even have that caliber in the first place.

Although I do the same thing and only shoot ammo that I produce, which sends a 125gr bullet at 1,500fps with a chamber pressure of only 34,000psi, I don't quite agree with your advice to just shoot 9mm +p+ if you're not going with full house .357. - First, the 9mm +p+ can only just barely kiss 1,300fps with a 115gr bullet, and that is from a pistol with a full length barrel. Even the most anemic, watered-down .357 Sig easily does that out of a shorter barrel and with a 125gr bullet. - More importantly, however, is that the .357 Sig pistols (particularly the Gen 4 models that use the stronger recoil spring assembly than the 9mm models) are designed from the ground up to take the higher chamber pressure, whereas the 9mms are not. I have personally seen several police MP5 SMGs that were completely ruined by fewer than 500 founds of the Federal 9BPLE (9mm +P+), and the recoil on those is brutal, as the guns, particularly the recoil systems, are not made to take that kind of slide/bolt velocity. Also, nobody makes practice ammo for 9mm with anything approaching +P+ velocities or similar recoil. Therefore, if you carry +P+ in a 9mm, you will likely practice with stuff that recoils much less, and then if you actually have to use your full power ammo in self defense, the different recoil will make you miss like crazy. This is why the Illinois State Police had such a miserable record in actual shootings compared to qualification and practice when they issued the 9mm +P+, and is the reason they switched to the .40.

i absolutely love my Glock 33. The recoil isnt that bad, its weird to explain... and this is all of course in my personal experience and opinion. the .357 recoil is more along the lines of a .45, its not snappy like the .40cal, instead of it taking a beating on your wrists you feel the recoil flow through your hands and back twords your arms. im not very good at explaining it... but if you've ever shot a 40 and 45 its like shooting the .45 with a little more blast. i have the G19 21 33 36 and 42 and own a couple of more pistols and to me the G33 is actually one of the smoothest. maybe its because i have the Gen4 w/ the beaver tail extension and a pearce grip extension so it fits my hand like a glove but i thoroughly enjoy it. The cost of ammo isnt as bad as they say, i can pick up a box of 50 range rounds for 18.50. the self defense ammo is kind of steep but its not like youre going to be shooting that everyday.(hopefully) im going to have videos up soon

Your story about the birth of the 357 Sig is completely wrong. The 357 Sig was created in 1994 as a response to an FBI request for a semi auto cartridge with the same performance as a 357 magnum out of a 4 inch revolver because of the magnum's proven reliability . Sig Sauer partnered with Federal Ammunition and designed the 357 Sig, which is essentially a 40 caliber cartridge with a 9mm projectile. It's called the 357 Sig because Sig Sauer was the lead company, and it's performance closely resembles the 357 magnum in 125 grain.

I started with a Gen2 Glock 31 the week they became available. It is my favorite carry caliber, though in a Sig P229 Elite now. The ease of going to 40, even to 9 for the Glocks makes it a great choice. My 229 came with both 357 and 40 barrels and a complete 9mm upper. That's stout. And they offer a .22 upper for it as well. I'd be interested to know why, in the gel, you didn't choose different points of aim, even flip the block, to illustrate the difference in performance. The end result looks like a shotgun blast with 3 pellets of 000

If your desire is to have 3 different calibers, but one weapon, then the direction for your quest is the Glock 20/29/40. It is the 10mm that is the father to both the .357 SIG and the .40 cal. The 10mm and the .40 cal are the same bullet and both will fire out of the stock Glock 20/29/40. The only thing you would need to change to make your pistol a .357 SIG would be the barrel.
@roncoon34647 жыл бұрын
"Crash Test", the Glock .357 SIG and the .40 cal are both built on 9mm frames. Whereas, the 10mm and the .45 cal are built on the same frame. Which caliber claims ownership of the frame is irrelevant. Both are stronger than the 9mm when incorporating a higher caliber round in the upper. With regard to Flex and Kaboom, yes that may be a definite possibility after considerable wear and tear coming from the .357 SIG and the .40 cal rounds imposing their strengths over the 9mm frames. But on the 10mm? Not happenin', But you and your buddy keep testing his 10, with some quality ammo, and you let me know when it Kaboom's in one or both of your hands.

If the .40 S&W and .357 Sig are so similar, why do you even have to change the barrel? You don’t have to change the magazine. Thank you.
@762x51n8o4 жыл бұрын
Because one barrel has a .40-size hole down it and one has a .357-size hold down it. (approximate size holes, I haven't measured exact). Also, different chambers -- the cases, though *kind of the same*, are different, and so they have different chambers. There are a couple of other difference in the case, but to keep it simple: the .40 case is based off the 10mm case, though it's shorter in length. The .357 SIG case is a necked-down 10mm case, not a .40 case. If a .40 case were necked-down, it would be too short, so the 10mm case is used. (I believe there are also differences in wall thickness as well). Also, the magazine is mostly the same, but they do have different followers. You can use a .40 magazine for the .357 SIG, but it might not be as reliable as one with the proper follower. Though, I've used .40 aftermarket Glock magazines with my .357 and haven't had any feed issues at all.

actually its the 10mm AUTO shortened then necked because the casing of .40 SW has thinner walls than 357SIG or 10mm. You theoretically could make 357 SIG casing out of 10mm casing but trying to do the same with .40 would be VERY bad idea

The last 30 seconds of this video aren't exactly a ringing endorsement for the 357 Sig. NONE of those shots from the G31,32, or 33 penetrate 12" of gel (the FBI minimum standard). The problem is the round is moving too fast & dumps all it's energy in the first 8 inches. The violent expansion is slowing down the bullet too quickly. Also, why 147gr 9mm's can penetrate 15"........it's a slower heavier bullet with less expansion, but with far deeper penetration.

Do some research on the round and the laws of physics and what not and it tell us reality. Facts and science say the 357 sig is superior in ever way possible when it comes to handgun caliber. Regardless of at 3 yards away or 100 yards away real 357 sig loads will kill you dead and it’s flat shooting which makes you far more accurate at range against a target at 50,75,100 yards. Can you do that with 9mm,40 cal, or 45 acp. Most 357 sig ammo at FPS or muzzle energy tells you all you need to know.

Obviously you must care, since you're sending me love notes. - Did I say "expansion is the same", or did I say, "expansion was uniform. With not THAT MUCH of a difference."? You're right, I could have got more technical, with calibers and exact measurements, but I honestly didn't see a reason to do that. In all honesty, if I were to shoot something alive, with a handgun, do you think a difference of 0.02 will make a difference? Maybe I'm in error to think this way, but I don't. I don't even think the difference between 0.357 and 0.450 makes that much of a different. I don't. What matters is where that .357 or .450 hits on the object I'm shooting at. I love discussing this stuff, and you bring up great points on how I could have done this video better. But I'm very approachable and open to constructive criticism, so in the future, just discuss it with me without the condescension and dismissiveness.
