I took a deer with underwoods loading of the 147 grain XTP 357 sig from my p250c at about 5 yards. It was stuck in a fence and the poor thing had pretty much torn its leg off so it was the only humane thing to do. Regardless it was fast and humane, I would see no issue with using the same round to hunt a deer with if one was hunting with a handgun. My late father loved the .38 super from a 1911! He was a 1911 guy anyway, but as he put it ".38 super is a specialist's round" hits harder than 9mm recoil compares to .45acp, an extra round in the mag, etc.. It's good to see someone comparing it to its competition, and for a 90 year old cartridge, it still packs a whollop.

@danphariss1332 жыл бұрын
@StringerNews1 The old late 1930s loading was 130 gr at 1300. It was developed in the 1930s because the 45 ACP was not great at penetrating car bodies. And all the bad guys were driving cars. Many lawmen carried including some Texas Rangers. But in later years its been loaded down since its the same case as the 38 ACP and the early Browning autos in 38 ACP were too weak for 130 gr at 1300. The newer chambers head space off the case mouth and are more accurate than the early guns. A TRUE 38 Super +P would move a 124 gr over 1350 as it will do with ease. Instead the factory stuff is about 1150-1200. Was popular for a time in competition because it would make major power factor with less recoil than the 45 ACP. At 50 yards its a one shot stopper on a four legged Coyote with a shoulder shot. With Starline brass it will exceed 357 sig easily with no pressure signs or bulged brass. The velocity makes it an effective 100 yard load or even a little farther. There were even Thompson SMGs made in Super.

Please tell me how the guns vertical recoil has anything to do with a "flip" is your gun doing a back flip? Do you say I flipped my car when it raises off the ground if you have excess horsepower to lift the front tires of the ground? When you flip a coin do you just raise it to a angel higher of its original position? No. There is no "flip" involved. Correct or not it just sounds ignorant. Let me just flip my gun. Think about it. Either way I wont ever say flip.

Paul, thank you VERY much for this EXCELLENT video. I was one of the guys who asked for a .38 Super - .357 Sig comparison, and your demonstrated analysis really answers my questions and provides precisely the information I was hoping to see. So, again, I thank you. Please permit me to offer two comments: 1. If you believe the marketing folks at Remington’s ammunition division have never heard of you, well, I believe you’re modest but incorrect. Your credibility, expertise, and honesty are clear as well as INFLUENTIAL (for example, the reason my H&K USP Tactical, which is about a foot from this laptop, is loaded with “old fashion” 230 grain, .45 ACP Golden Sabers is Paul Harrell). 2. I was impressed with the velocity differential - substantially favoring the .357 Sig - which you documented. It seems potentially noteworthy that the Glock’s barrel is somewhat shorter than either the 1911’s or the Beretta’s. Of course, that would likely mean - with equal barrel lengths - the comparison would favor the .357 Sig even more (as you noted in your summary remarks).

Chamber pressure for the .357 magnum is 35,000 PS___ 357 Sig is 40,000 PSI..they are not anywhere close!
@lancewhiteeagle32037 жыл бұрын
toddy2519 Maximum chamber pressure doesn't mean all that much. .357 Sig has a Max pressure higher than a 10mm (35, 500 I believe), but the 10 is generally a more potent round. Max pressure just relates to the thickness of brass on the casing.
@toddy25197 жыл бұрын
" Max pressure just relates to the thickness of brass on the casing." Brass thickness has nothing to do with chamber pressures. Chamber pressure is established by SAAMI as the maximum average safe operating pressure before a possible chamber failure. Consider the .357 magnum at 35,000 psi which is the same as for 9mm Parabellum. The .25 Auto has a SAAMI pressure of 25,000 psi. Chamber pressure means a lot and 5,000 psi difference is very meaningful! If you are a reloader, please be sure and let me know ahead of time before you head for the range, as I don't want to be there when you are!
@lancewhiteeagle32037 жыл бұрын
toddy2519 So by your estimation the .357 Sig is a more powerful round than the 50 AE (36,000 psi)? That is a hell of a round then if it's out pacing a Desert Eagle.

If you want the 38 Super updated to modern specs, try the 9x23 Winchester. Similar in size, the 9x23's SAAMI average pressure is 55,000 psi, same as the 223 Remington rifle cartridge. The 9x23 delivers the 357 mag performance in a straight walled case.

I Think It's Probably His Phone Doing It Because If It Was Keyboard You'd Have To Toggle Shift With Each Word, whereas phones have an auto capitalize feature that works at the beginning of sentences. It's kind of hard to do with a keyboard. But he may be older, not all of us are young computer enthusiasts. Maybe he's spacing twice or something on his phone and it's thinking each word is a new sentence. I see this a lot and its just my thoughts on it. Now, for the part you won't like. I don't think Paul is as big a fan of the 1911 as you may think. He's been pretty critical of it and explained that for about 98% of us, there's no reason to have a 1911 when you can get much better capacity in 9mm or .40 S&W. I like the 1911, don't get me wrong. It's the original American auto loading classic. It was the standard of firearms for many a year. But I think today, in most cases, you'd be better off carrying something else. However, 1911 has a huge fanbase of collectors and shooters. And they are also used very often in competitions. So obviously I'd never say it's terrible, it's not. But I remember Paul talking about 9mm being better for most people to carry, which is true, unless you're a comp shooter carrying a regular caliber space gun with upgrades the equivalent of the original purchase price. I'm a .40 S&W G23 with the 24 round mag kind of guy. I carry 24+1 and then two other regular sized mags, one in the console of my vehicle, one in my inside jacket pocket.

steve lemieux I did this a few months back. I'm sure, as you now know, it was one of the best investments you ever made. Target ammo is pricey but I buy it online for .40/rd, on sale and in bulk. I'm saving my brass and have dies to one day reload. Every time I shoot the 357 Sig out of my G22, it puts a splitting grin on my face I can't wipe off all day. So much more felt power, accurate, makes your 40 suddenly feel like it took an NZT pill, right?

Maybe it was only my own impression, but it seemed that the flash and evident recoil of the .38 super was more pronounced than that of the .357 Sig, even though the chrono numbers suggested it would be otherwise.
@steviesevieria18687 жыл бұрын
+Bob G ...I saw the extra flash on the 38 Super as well, seems like the signature of wasted gunpowder to me. Like a more minor version of what you get from a snub nose 357 Magnum: powerful blast, powerful recoil, but significantly reduced muzzle velocity.
@loves2shoot7 жыл бұрын
was gonna add same comment. I"ve never been around much of the 38 supers, but every .357 sig I've seen shot indoors has a HUGE ball of flame and I often joke about being able to read by the light of it. So, I was anticipating it would be more than the 38 sup on this video and was surprised ..... now I need to see the 38 super indoors. I know there are a lot of variables, powder types being the obvious major types..... I had a bare barrel ar15 years ago and normal flash with most mil spec ammo, but the Guat stuff I shot around dusk literally shocked me and my onlookers. After I shot a bit, some wanted to shoot it but even more just wanted to sit around and watch the fireballs! This was in the mid 90's. But lesson learned was mil surplus ammo could vary greatly in flash signature!!!

Hey Paul, if you're looking for 1911 style 357 Sig I do know that Lone Wolf makes some conversion barrels for .40 S&W CZ pistols. (I would love to get my hands on a P-06 and convert it over to 357 Sig but I'm a little too poor for that.) Also, Sig Sauer makes some 1911s in caliber 357 Sig, no surprises there, you just need to pay them your arm, leg, and firstborn son.

Badass video!! About time someone does a review on 38 super! Seems like everyone on band wagon block 19 9mm lol Mexico loves the 1911 in 38 super! Very popular down there! Seemed to me like it had the best fireballs! It's a caliber that is used by many gangsters and drug cartels tho... didn't know 357 Sig traveled that fast!! U should do a 357 Sig vs. 5.7x28mm!!!

Isn't it popular because civilians can't have 9x19 in Mexico? I'm not saying its a bad round, but that it got popular because they couldnt have what they really wanted.
@1manarmyguzman6297 жыл бұрын
traumajock no it's popular because it's a very lethal and its in a 1911 mexicans love 1911s. 38super round is pretty much a 9mm on steroids and cause .45acp its not permitted by civilians over there. But I mean now a days nothing is permitted cause of the drug cartels. They see u with a gun over there n they either gonna take it away n kill u or rob u. Yes the cops n cartels both. they work together

Thanks for this video Paul, I carry a Glock 32, .357 Sig daily, and yes, I know my gun works, I know that shooting it into a bad guy will make them stop ( eventually, with good shot placement, I understand my ammunition selection is not a magic talisman that will cause evil men to disappear in a cloud of smoke ), I knew it was faster, but I just knew those as factoids, nothing really solid about what that means and really no legal way to test it anywhere near where I live. Short of getting into a gunfight anyway, which is not something I want to deliberately enter. This was very reassuring to me that I made a good selection based on the information I had at hand. You do great work here, thank you again.

Rated velocities for the.357 SIG are often out of 4" or even 3.5" barrels. His Glock 31 has a 4.5" barrel. The SIG's extra case volume, higher pressure, and relatively small bore means it responds really well to longer barrel lengths. Even an extra half-inch or inch can mean substantial velocity increases.

I've used 38 Super for oh 25 years very under rated cartridge. It out rates the 9 mm if one uses hand loads which eclipses factory ammo by a lot. My 125 gr bullets hand loaded over a chrony hit at 1,370 but elevation makes a big difference here in Montana my home sits at 5,700 ft, thinner air causes less drag on a bullet.
@Gieszkanne7 жыл бұрын
Some handload data even say 1470 is possible with 124gr

Yes true the 38 Super is no slouch it can beat the 9 mm and rival it 357 Sig.
@davidcalderwood17 жыл бұрын
Gieszkanne No manufacturer published anything that high that I've seen. Perhaps using cases that are more like Starline brass that might be thicker, but it seems safer to simply switch to the 9x23, which uses the same magazines and is close to the same size. The 9x23 is intended to run at about 150% of the Super's pressures. It's the most underrated pistol cartridge out there.
@montanamountainmen61047 жыл бұрын
True but at the time the 9x23 wasn't manufactured in the early 90's, why I went with the 38 Super. The 9x23 is a under rated round, most even today don't even know about it.
