There’s one that spawns near the Spring of… Power? Is that one area that was patrolled by flying Guardians in the last installment. I remember I spawned it, defeated it, but because I was using explosives to kill it, all of the grass was on fire, creating an updraft, and then Phantom Ganon spawned, turning the sky red. Legit looked like a demon crawling up from Hell. It was great, but terrifying.

Yeah at least you could bully the Guardians after learning their patterns and weaknesses and get lots of fodder for powerful weapons in the last game. Granted Phantom Ganon gives you some pretty sweet melee weapons (that you can fuse to other weapons to take away their health-draining effect), but the ancient weapons you got from Robbie lasted a lot longer.

The worst part about these guys is that they can appear ANYWHERE. Not even just near large patches of gloom underground. No - Depths, Caves, Ruins, not even the tranquility of the overworld is safe. Guardians you could almost always see coming. They were big, obvious, and easily fooled by clever use of cover. But these guys? They rise from the ground without any warning - often the first indication you have of their presence is the screech they make when they spot you, and by then it's already too late.

@@DrAnimePhD Actually Floor Masters do hurt you. Floor Masters are the ones you first meet in the Forest Temple in OoT, the hand that when you attack it it splits into 3 small hands. If you don't kill them in one shot then one of them latches onto you and drains your health before reforming back into the big hand. The big hand can also turn green an ram into you. You are correct though on the Wall Master and how both are babies compared to the Gloom Hands.

One of the main reasons why I think the Gloom Hands are scarier than the Guardians is that they weren't teased or hinted at all before totk's release. We knew Guardians would be in botw and we knew they'd shoot big scary lasers...but the Gloom Hands didn't appear in any promotional material, so encountering them for the first time is much more of a surprise and very panic-inducing since you have no idea what they can do or how to avoid them.

Some of my favorite things about this: they made it so the screen goes blood red when they get close enough. The fact they're faster than you so you cant run away. The way they just appear out of nowhere. Im still not sure if they have set spawn areas or if they just pop up whenever they feel like it. the first time I got attacked by these, the way they just vanished made me wonder if that even happened at all. They remind me of the Guardians from Skyward Sword that chase you around, but in a different way. I really like them

Fun fact: when gloom hands grab you, their arms pulse and swell like a gullet, as if they're literally slurping your life force from your body and sending it directly to Ganondorf. I noticed this in the lomei labyrinth island basement when Tulin's avatar kept getting stun-locked by 2 hands while I was on a lower ledge where the other 3 couldn't reach me (Gloom Spawn can't climb steep surfaces, only slide across flat terrain and gentle slopes)

My first encounter with these things happened after I got myself a new horse who I would later name Tempest. I had decided to just ride Tempest until I got to the next stable to register him, along the way towards Gerudo desert. On the way, I decided to stop by the ruins where you can get Majora's mask, and had a little looksee. Emphasis on little, since I quickly dropped that and decided to try feed Tempest, since we still weren't the closest. Having no apples or carrots, I attempted to feed him some fire fruit. Then he suddenly reared and looked afraid. Here's the following thought process: *Oh, do horses dislike fire fruit that much? Oh wait, there seems to be an enemy theme, maybe that's what's scaring him. Let's see what we---uhh, what are those hands? Why are they surrounded by malice???? WHY IS THE SKY TURNING RED???!!!!* I freaked out and jumped onto Tempest in an attempt to escape, but we were already surrounded. Either the hands hit Tempest and he bucked me off, or they just hit me off. Either way, I remember rolling into the pond nearby and swimming for all it was worth, praying that it couldn't swim or wouldn't go around and grab me on the other side. Afterwards, it gave up and vanished into a red sparkle, which I feel like I could be the first person to see that, considering everyone else would either kill it or run away. After that, I circled around the spark, jumped onto Tempest and we ran as fast as his hooves could take us. Considering how numerous these things are, I feel like this isn't my last unintentional encounter with them.

I believe that these Gloom Hands, Gloom Spawn, whatever are some of the freakiest enemies in most Zelda games. They spawn out of nowhere when you're walking along, probably to your shock and confusion, or you don't even get to see them and just hear the screech. Then the sky turns a blood red as this haunting theme plays, and it gives that perfect, terrifying atmosphere of "OH FUCK, RUN!" And couple that with they kill you, slowly, by grabbing you, and are *faster* than you? Definitely one of the most terrifying encounters for any new player.

This is exactly what happened to me, heading to the same shrine whilst commenting on the differences between the games in my head. But out the corner of my eye I thought it was a malice pit, but then something moved in it and there were hands. At first I hoped that they were confined to the gloom, but they say me and the gloom moved with it. I didn’t think to climb up a tree as it sprinted after me and turned everything red. I died and proceeded to try and avoid the general area it came from since I didn’t remember exactly where. After getting the shrine I’ve been too traumatized to go back to the forest of spirits; even after I fought the gloom hands multiple times and the thing that followed after it, even after I blitzed through multiples of those things, I refuse to go back to the forest of spirits

So! My little horror story actually wasn’t my first encounter with the Gloom Hands, but when I first defeated one. For the most part, I could outrun them just fine. Until I got to the Labyrinth in the Hebra region. First off, I spotted the hands through some wall bars as I walked past at the same time, which is already unsettling. Then it cornered me in the shrine’s room. Which I should remind you, is a small enclosed space surrounded on almost all sides, with the shrine entrance blocked off by ice. But I eventually figured out you could in fact fight them, so I fended it off with bomb arrows. Lemme fuckin’ tell you, there is no way to properly describe that split second of pure relief, being instantly overtaken by absolute terror once the Phantom Ganon music kicked in and he literally appeared right behind me. I didn’t even fight him. I panicked, just blew up the shrine entrance and hightailed it inside. Best scare I think I’ve ever experienced from a non-horror game. 10/10

(Some advice about tracking gloom hands, but HAS SPOILER ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU KILL THEM) If you guys are afraid of random gloom hand appearances, just know that they have set locations. I have around 20+ marked on the surface alone. Good news though, you can track them if you have the tracking ability and the camera! The gloom hands themselves can’t be detected by the camera, but if you defeat them you can take a picture of Phantom Ganon. If you track Phantom Ganon, you will be alerted when you are near gloom hands. No more getting jumped randomly haha

I had encountered my first gloom in a dip by hylia ruins/around the castle area, by a thick tree and I had marked it for my own sanity after the fear wore off after I panic teleported bahahaha
