Gloomhaven | DIY Storage Solution | by Game Brigade

For my copy of Gloomhaven I’ve bought a pre-designed foam core insert, everything fits in the box, including tiles, and it closes well except for the last centimeter. I’ve never liked the idea of having components scattered in different places, that’s what makes me mad about my Imperial Assault with expansions! But your method surely provides a faster setup.

I am like you and have my Imperial Assault divided between three different boxes and I have to make sure I know what box something is located. its a pain.

Hey Bryan, the storage solution you came up with looks awesome. I especially love how you are able to put in little accessories like the card sleeves and the pencil sharpener. It's awesome that it works for you and you're able to enjoy the game. I bought a wooden organizer off Gaming Trunk and it has been the GOAT. Like you, I get a scenario of Gloomhaven up in less than 20 minutes, and breakdown takes about the same amount of time. The only thing is it just has a map tile tray, but after 30 or so missions, I already am able to equate the letters to the shapes of the tiles so that's no longer an issue. It's very cool to see how this DIY organizer differs from a wooden wood. Thanks for the content!

Your Gloomhaven storage solution is Excellent! In a perfect world it would all fit within the box, but it just isn't going to happen. I love the idea of re-using the packaging sleeves! I'm going to do that for other games.

In my friend’s copy of Gloomhaven that we are currently playing he uses the accordion/Plano box combo. For my copy, I carved out all the enemy shapes in the original foam pieces to store the standees because I am adamant about keeping everything in original boxes. I do want to get a small organizer for the status tokens though. Thanks for sharing!

I eventually had to cave and start clearing original boxes from my wall. Things like expansion boxes just need to fit in the OG box and then get stored away. I'm not there yet to the point that I can actually throw them away, but eventually I cant store every empty box.

Great video. I got a copy of gloomhaven with the frost haven Kickstarter and should be arriving this week. Definitely will need a storage solution for it.

let me know what type of solution you decide. You'll be shocked at the amount of cardboard punches you will get in the box. I recommend not watching an unboxing video.

Nice storage solution for gloomhaven. You would think they game designers would think about this before they make a game. Extreme setup time would definitely be a deterrent from playing one game over another

I've had so many people recommend Gloomhaven to me, but now that Dungeon Universalis has kickstarted, I'll probably go for that (I pledged for PM access). Still, thanks for doing this vid. I do believe that buying Jaws will help you learn if Gloomhaves mechanics work for you. I might wait for frosthaven at this point, but thats personal prefrence.

Great video Bryan.. and also a damn fine storage solution! I remember spending the best part of two days sorting and storing Gloomhaven when it first arrived- I definitely started to wonder if I’d made a mistake... until I played it 😂. I definitely want to pick up some player boxes, and I love it that you beefed up your battle goals. Also I feel your pain with the reusable stickers- I ended up marking them because I realised they kind of get damaged when you peel off anyway... I figure if I really want to play again fresh I’ll just buy another set of stickers :). Great stuff!

I used to use accordion storage & Plano boxes for Gloomhaven but settled on Folded Space insert. Cheap light and everything fits in the box. There is still merit to use a organizer for the map tiles as it is annoying to find the right tile.

Love your DIY solution for Gloomhaven! The Accordion file is a fantastic idea that I wish I had thought of. I've pre-ordered a broken token organiser for Frosthaven but my current Gloomhaven one is unfortunately just some marked baggies. It could and should be much better and i'm tempted to go for a broken token.

Great setup, pretty much exactly how mine is stored. I got roughly followed Ryan Chaffee's video "Gloomhaven storage solution for under $20", which is basically the same deal.

Just watched the video. Incredible and a bit creepy. I got the idea of the pizza boxes online in a forum. I wonder if the poster pulled the idea from that video. I tried to look up as much storage solution ideas before I went and bought stuff. What's totally crazy is the layout of the Plano boxes and underneath.

Great storage solution! I really like the mini pizza box idea. Though, it frustrates me when the entire game doesn’t easily store in the original box. I just played Gloomhaven JotL last night. It has a decent insert, but the game contents need to be perfectly “tetrissed” back into the box to get everything to fit right. Paladins otWK is another offender.

@@GameBrigade Understandable. I’d rate it a “C” overall. The removable token tray that conveniently stores all tokens is excellent. The miniature storage, card filing, and player boxes are well done. However the tiny compartment where you’re supposed to store all the monster components fails miserably. It’s frustrating to re-pack the contents. Original GH has the same problem. Even with an engineered storage solution (We have Broken Token) the game box has “lid-lift” when packed reasonably well, and set up and tear down is still no picnic. I like your solution much better--with mini pizza boxes and dungeon tile filing system. It seems like that would be much more efficient to set up.

@@ThrehaneMiniatures the filing system for the map tiles alone is worth it. It's interesting to me how even a paid storage solution still has issues. I expect if I pay 50.00 on a storage plan than it is going to make my set up time faster and easier.

I removed our bed, closet etc., basically our room and added a big table and shelf and 2 chairs and now we have no problems because we never pack the game back into the box. We just leave it open for now. The downside of this is that we are sleeping in the living room on the couch for a while but thats the only downside. Spread all other things around the table on the floor whenever we need it we just look on the floor to the area (alphabetical order). Where my closet was is now A-Z all the Maps in a row, where our nightstands were we have the monsters & bosses cards,... Its the Gloomhaven room now. My gf was shocked first but now she wants to finish the game with me so we get our bed back. If you have a spare room I recommend just getting a huge ass table and never pack the game away ever. Its the easiest option and best in my opinion cause you can just play the game on the fly. Like when you wake up, your on your way to the bathroom to brush your teeth just pop in that room real quick, draw 2 cards and go that round. When the rounds over you can just leave it how it was and repeat til whenever the scenario is finished. On your way to a wedding and need to get ready but want to play a quick round - no problem. Pop in that room real quick and draw 2 cards and go. Pizza is still in the oven and it takes 5 minutes but can't do anything else in that time? Pop in the room and go for a quick round. Waiting in Que as damage dealer in WoW or Overwatch, 10 minutes, pop in the room and go for a few quick rounds of Gloomhaven without setting everything back up.

Game Brigade Feels just like gloomhaven but with a faster setup time due to the binder holding all the scenario maps.

The app unfortunately was forced to stop updating because the designer of Gloomhaven made his own and the other one didn't have ip rights.

I'm ridiculously close to pulling the trigger on Gloomhaven if nothing else pops up on Kickstarter soon. I'm very jealous of how much variety you have across the pond in terms of bits & bobs to make your own storage solutions. The shops here in Ireland aren't great for convenient little tubs, sleeves, etc. for organising board games (from where I live anyway), so I'd nearly consider an official storage solution, but they can be so expensive :( Regardless, this is some good inspiration if I do grab Gloomhaven, thanks for sharing.

@@GameBrigade Yeah Jaws Of The Lion has been shaping up as a nice option to get the ball rolling and to introduce my fiancé at the same time. I'm from county Kerry, way down south in between counties Cork and Limerick. It's a very scenic county with national parks and coastal attractions. I've since moved to the midlands for work since graduating from college, but I hope to return some day. Did you enjoy Dublin? I'm personally not a fan of the place, but that's the country boy in me :P

@@GameBrigade haha I can understand that. We speak quite fast and the accent, while it various drastically from county to county, it can muffle words to a non-irish person. I'm glad you enjoyed it, I was in Italy recently. I visited Assisi (I think that's the name), my god it was beautiful.

I’ve had some bad luck with my Gloomhaven copy. The box was damaged (cracks in the corners of the box) and something that looks like water-damage on the world map. Already tried to contact Cephalofair games, but they seem to be out of the air.

I have a personal pet peeve with diy board game storage in general. Not in any way with yours specifically, it's great, I just couldn't stand using those plano- or pizza-type boxes for example, feels to tacky in my eyes. I'm a bit ashamed to say it, but I'm looking forward to getting the obscenely expensive Smonex insert for when I (hopefully) get Gloomhaven for my birthday.

@@GameBrigade My group finished the main campaign and went on to finish all the non-campaign scenarios for completeness' sake. Plus the solo scenarios and a bunch of randomly-generated ones. We absolutely tore through it tbh! I think Frosthaven looks great, but I didn't back. Much as I think GH is one of the best gaming experiences of my life, I am very burned-out on it at this stage. Also don't want to distract from KDM, which is my new passion.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world that really, really dislikes Gloomhaven. The art, the presentation, the classes, the races, the gameplay mechanics, the lack of dice... I even hate the font and the title Gloomhaven itself... Yeah I know, no one agrees with me. That said more power to all of you that love it and are excited for Frosthaven.
