Some heroes don't wear capes (to be fair, we don't know what you accent those taseful plaids with on your free time, it might be a cape). This series was beyond helpful. I'm off on my adventure and haven't had to read a single rule yet. You've eliminated a serious barrier to entry for this dyslexic and I sincerely thank you (and the good folks at Cephalofair for helping to sponsor this). I really appreciate how the design of the game doesn't punish you for making mistakes. "Whatever, just have fun," is a deeply reassuring approach for a designer to take with their rules, especially for a box this dense. Frosthaven might be a bit much for me, but Jaws of the Lion is just kinda perfect. There's a lot, but I still don't feel like I need (or want) and app to manage it all and really enjoy physically interacting with all of its mechanics. I'd just go play a video game, otherwise. This is my first ever solo board game experience, and I'm glad I started here with the best teacher I could have hoped for.

Be warned. The campaign aka the actual game is the very, very, very last thing they're putting into the game. Right now, there are just a few modes of play that are nowhere near what people mean when they say Gloomhaven. And they may not get the campaign done in 2020. I'm waiting until it's days away from full release before I buy it because of that.
@brianflansburg89344 жыл бұрын
Only includes the starting classes plus one so not all my favorites but it is easier and quicker because you don't need to control monster focus and there's not the huge setup of Gloomhaven. Also these days it is harder to get gaming groups around the table.

Hi Rodney, first of all, thanks for the very clear explanations! They’ve made it even more easy for us to play JOTL. We do have one remaining question which we can seem to figure out, hopefully you can help us: For example, the favorite card from hatchet, it shows 2XP gained written on the card (when performing part of the action). But how often does hatchet gain that XP, since it can remain active for the whole scenario? - every time part of the action is completed? (This seems overkill to us) - every time Hatchet (re-)uses the card from the start within the scenario. - only once per scenario Thanks a lot in any case! Val
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed the videos :) I do by best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. Just a heads up for most questions like this. In this case though, you get that XP just once the card has been played. For other card specific questions I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. Have fun playing!
@valeriepeene8183 жыл бұрын

So I convinced my wife and my mother to play Gloomhaven JotL with me! I have had it for a while but haven’t had people to play with. I also have Gloomhaven which they will play with me when we are done with JotL. We are having a ton of fun playing! Both my wife and mother are doing great in the game! I’m the Red Guard to tank. My Wife is the Demolitionist. My mother is the Void Warden. Our son who is 10 plays Hatchet but he doesn’t have the patience to play all the time. But anyway, we just finished this scenario and it got pretty hairy as I went in for an attack and missed my attack and didn’t have shields available for my shield spikes. Got down to 2 health. We recovered and cleared that area. Got into the boss room and amazingly we killed the boss on our first turn after entering the room. My mothers last turn she was able to move me right next to the boss and the two zealots were moved forward one space from when we entered the room. I had first initiative. I had an upper attack for 3 +1 with using light that was infused, then pulled a -1. Also had a +3 attack on my lower part of the other card and pulled a +0 modifier. Boss down to 12 health plus I poison it. My second attack also hit the zealots. First one for 3 so it would heal the boss which removed the poison. My second attack I pulled my cancel modifier again so I missed my attack. No heals on the boss which was awesome. My wife moves up, attacks the boss for 3…down to 9 health. My mother had 3rd initiative. Moved up and granted a +5 attack for me and I pulled the 2x modifier for an attack of 10!! I couldn’t believe that we actually killed the boss on our first turn! I did this scenario with just my son and I a while ago and we had a much tougher time with the boss, so I was in even more shock when we beat the Blood Tumor on our first turn in the room!! Can’t wait to continue! This upcoming Friday, Cinco de Mayo is our next play session!!

I've a question about a couple of the Voidwarden cards you may know the answer to… These are the small combat cards you get through perks and there is one that gives +0 Ally and +1 Ally with heal symbols (I think). We have played this as a +0 or +1 combat cards and also a heal of 1 to an ally but can't find this anywhere in the rules or glossary. Thanks.

I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card/character effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!

When you level up, do you swap the level 2 card with one from your current hand, or just add it to your current hand? Thank you this video series was very helpful :)
@WatchItPlayed4 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget, you can only bring in as many cards to a scenario as your characters hand limit (you’ll find a reminder about this on the last video). So it’s not so much that you’re swapping the new one for any specific other one. You add the new card to your pool of “available” ability cards and then before the next scenario, pick as many as you want to use, up to your limit. Hope that helps!

Hi, Rodney. I love your vids. Could you recommend which would be better to buy after finishing Jaws of the Lion, Gloomhaven or Frosthaven?
@WatchItPlayed4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for! That said, in this case, I also have played either of those other games, so I REALLY can't help :)

Presumably the Blood Tumour cannot heal itself if it is Poisoned (whether directly, or indirectly via its minions getting injured)?

Rodney, question for you. Are there any significant rule changes between the original Gloomhaven and Jaws of the Lion? I would like to use Jaws to introduce the family to Gloomhaven, but if the rules are different enough, I would rather buy the original outright. Any suggestions on this?
@WatchItPlayed4 жыл бұрын
I never played the original, but I don't believe the rules are radically different from the bits I've picked up from reading online. That said, I really do think this has got to be the easier entry point, just based on how the box is set up, the maps are created, etc.

@@WatchItPlayed Thank you, Rodney! I think this will be a pretty easy purchase then. Be well and stay safe.

We finished Jaws of the Lion and I just received the original Gloomhaven and I was readying the manual and see I can upgrade the cards with the stickers provided, if I use characters from Jaws in gloomhaven can I use the stickers with them?
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if they are meant to be mixed in that way. That's something I would check the Jaws of the Lion rules for, as they talk about bringing characters into the main game.

This game is replayable?? Each time when I watch a video which introduce this one. I feel finishing full scenarios with same friend is difficult. because the game is too long. I think when play this with other who play this as beginner. I should start the game from first scenario. however, there are two equipments disturb replay. One is writing note for scoring. Second is a map where we paste sticker to show we cleared the scenarios. Replaying is worth thing for this game?? And I wish listen to your opinion that about Can I combine this with Gloomheaven or Frost heaven for play
@WatchItPlayed4 жыл бұрын
The rules provide ways to add and remove people from the campaign as you need to (that information is in this video). And there are multiple copies of the character sheets. The map is just a cool visual - you can easily track all its information on a piece of paper when you're replaying. I think the game is VERY replayable, but I can't really know if you'd find it replayable, as it would depend on your personal preferences. For example, I wouldn't mind if I didn't have the map the second time through, but maybe you'd care very deeply about it.
