I love that bright registration on the organ! It sounds like a chorus of flutes with a 2' Principal.

When I was a choirboy at St. Theresa of the Little Flower Catholic Church, we used to sing this on special occasions. For years I wondeed why it wasn't listed in the Schwann Catalog of Mozart recordings (an why there wasn't a Tenth mass, etc.) I've recently learned that because he work was actually composed by composed by the Viennese composer of light opera, Wenzel Müller (1768-1835). Still, I loved it as a kid and sill do.

Thanks! I was fortunate that year with the 1st soprano section. The secret to a volunteer choir program is maintaining a core of singers who can build repertoire. These singers enable the others to learn quickly. We probably scheduled rehearsals on this piece a month in advance of the worship service.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, my choirs enjoyed singing this work. I realize the English text gives it a different flavor from the original, but we really felt the emotional impact of the words.

I just learned that in 2000 our old Wicks was "transplanted" to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Highland Park, Ill. where the The Chicago Symphony Orchestra makes its summer home. Don't know how well the "transplant," went. I read they don't have chambers. LF had two (on on each side of the choir loft). That might affect the dynamics, as the louvers were opening and closing constantly as the instrument was played.

Please forgive all the typos above. If I knew how to correct them I would. But I still want to add that we sang it in Latin and the Church was on the South side of Chicago. It had seating for 1900 worshipers, and a magnificent Wicks pipe Organ. A lady named Alice Doney trained us and played the organ. Sadly the Church closed some 10 years ago for lack of local support. Incidentally the other parts of this Mass, particualry the Credo, are wonderful too.

Glad you liked it! As conductor, my challenge was to control that "big sound" and try to keep the pieces stylistically correct.

u have some powerful soprano's..and this song surely gave them a workout...it's beautiful..how long does it take to rehearse a song like this before you employ it?
@moosatious17 жыл бұрын
Yes, I saw somewhere on the internet that a publisher long ago incorrectly attributed it to Mozart. Not sure when Muller (1767-1835) wrote this, but perhaps it was well into the Romantic era. I know Alice Doney, our organist and director, gave it a very warm Romantic interpretation, that really didn't sound much like Mozart at all (as I learned in later years). You, however, make it sound more classical, like Mozart! Which of you had it "right" I have no idea.
