Bonfire night is to celebrate guy fawkes getting caught. Not his attemp. Why do you thing we have the penny for guy tradition. Where you walk ruund collecting money with your guy fawkes model you made, then burn the model of him on a bonfire later.

It's meaning has changed over the years, this is mainly seen in the fact that hardly anyone actually burns a "guy" anymore, if they do burn an effigy it's usually of some other figure of annoyance. The night, and act itself, is seen more as symbol of rebellion, far from it's original meaning. Even back then, whether Guido was a terrorist or heroic rebel really depended on what church you went to.

@@modithorson7484 where I'm from burning the guy is very common. I've never seen anyone burn a different figure of someone.

just to clear one thing up - for bonfire night, we don't celebrate the attempt, we celebrate the failed attempt...the letting-off of fireworks acts as a constant reminder that they intended to blow up parliament and failed so instead we have a celebration and use gunpower for enjoyment. Essentially it's like giving a massive middle finger to the terrorist. Unfortunately it shows a massive support towards the government 😞. I think most people now just enjoy the fireworks and forget the real meaning behind them. We also used to have massive bonfires where we'd burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes - ironically during the time when Maggie thatcher was PM a lot of people used an effigy of her. You don't tend to see nig events for bonfire night now...too costly
