I love this scene because it shows that there are gray areas. Cause and effect.

God, I hate this scene - for *many* reasons, but the biggest of which boils down to that it takes away such a massive sub-story in this incredible story (which was a huge part of the narrative that ultimately showed each and every coach and program in the US that "if you're gonna continue to be racist and completely refuse to recruit black players, you'll be a dinosaur soon and your program will be left behind completely")! Simply put, this loss - the *only* loss by this historic Texas Western 1966 team that ended the racist narrative altogether - came against a Seattle University squad in which *four* of its six rotation players were black (who were known as "the United Nations team" and were one of the *few other* schools outside of Texas Western actively recruiting black athletes - yes, black athletes found their way onto several squads in the past, including Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, but they often ended up there *despite* a lack of serious recruiting of black athletes)! It was a *major* part of the final narrative that the *only* squad that could beat this Texas Western squad that season was *another* such school that was *also* actively recruiting black players! It was *this* school that NBA legend *Elgin Baylor* famously played for (yes, Elgin Baylor played for *this* Seattle University program about *a decade* before the events of this movie - more on that later), and *this* major win is still celebrated by the school as one of its greatest college basketball achievements! But yes, back to Elgin Baylor and how his success at Seattle crazily set the stage for the events of *this* movie! Without getting too into detail, Baylor was *not* recruited by *any* college programs out of high school, but ended up at Seattle and ended up leading Seattle University (who had only made its first NCAA tournament in 1953) to the *NCAA tournament championship game* on an improbable run that *only* ended after losing in that final game to *Adolph Rupp's Kentucky* squad (sound familiar?)! From then on, black players were recruited *heavily* at Seattle University - ultimately leading to the events in *this* 1966 season!

This scene never made sense to me because they are making the black kids seem like the villain by making them racist towards the white kids.
