Whittle's jet engine could have been available much earlier but for the fact it had to be accepted by an RAF officer who mistakenly believed his own ideas about jet engines were better the Whittle's. It was he who held Whittle back. With out that officer then Whittle's jet engine could have been used much earlier. Just imagine a combat version of the Gloster E.26 during the Battle of Britain. Old Herman Goring claimed the Mosquito made him yellow and green with envy. You can only imagine how many other colours he would have turned if his Luftwaffe had to face jets.

@jimdavis83914 жыл бұрын
Early jet fighters really weren't all that great, poor range, lousy acceleration, unreliable engines and problems with guns at high speed being some of the issues; all the early models had to be used in niche roles (something that Hitler himself failed to understand) unlike aircraft such as the P51 and Mosquito which were very adaptable; some such as the A/B26, Skyraider still in use decades later. As always other technologies such as air to air missiles and airbourne radar had to grow in order for Jet fighters to explore their potential. Jet bombers if anything had more initial value, see the Canberra and B47.
@duncanmcgee134 жыл бұрын
The same could be said about the 262. There was another jet fighter ready for production as early as 1939 but the Luftwaffe saw no need for such an expensive project when, at the time, the 109 and 190 were both superior to anything they encountered. Then when it came time for the 262 Hitler demanded that it be a fighter bomber which pushed it back by several years.

The Meteor was a well sorted out design (for its time) with very reliable engines. The Me262 was a mess, it weaved horribly at high speed & went so fast pilots often didn't have time to get a shot in on a target. It's engines lasted no more than a few hours & THAT was only when they were used very, very carefully, otherwise they'd immediately destroy themselves. Often overlooked was the fact that the Me262 couldn't slow down, so it spent lots of time losing speed before it could land, making it a sitting duck for Allied Fighters, especially since the pilot couldn't throttle up to get away because that would immediately destroy the engines. The Me262 was so badly made panel gaps had to be bodged up with putty, the Meteor was so well made they flew until 2019 using the original engines. The Germans only had a very few Me262s, the Brits had hundreds of Meteors. Germany never stood a chance.

The Żurakowski Cartwheel: "At the 1951 at Farnborough Airshow, Żurakowski demonstrated a new aerobatics manoeuvre, the "Zurabatic Cartwheel", in which he suspended the Gloster Meteor G-7-1 prototype he was flying in a vertical cartwheel. "This jet manoeuvre was the first new aerobatic in 20 years."[6] The cartwheel used the dangerously asymmetric behaviour the Meteor had with one engine throttled back. It started with a vertical climb to 4,000 feet, by which point the aircraft had slowed to only 80 mph. Cutting the power of one engine caused the Meteor to pivot. When the nose was pointing downwards, the second engine was throttled back. The aircraft continued to rotate through a further 360 degrees on momentum alone, having lost nearly all vertical velocity. Carrying out the cartwheel and recovering from it without entering an inverted spin (which the Meteor could not be brought out of) required great skill.[7]" From: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janusz_%C5%BBurakowski choppergirl.air-war.org

The P-80 was a fighter with much a more reliable engine and better maneuverability. Its armament was a bit wimpy compared to the quad 30mm guns of the 262 but the 30mm guns were meant to do maximum damage to a bomber in the shortest length of time. That was not a dog-fight but an interception. N.B. 'Vikings at Waterloo' - an interesting short read on the jet engine development in Clitheroe, Lancashire (apologies, I cannot recall the author). Here, Sir Frank Whittle signed contracts in the Swan and Royal pub in the main street - a neat place to stop and pass the time if you're ever in town. Nearby production of the engines at Barnoldswick, also led to the 'B' designation to some of the World's most iconic jet engines e.g. RB-211 (i.e. Rolls-Royce Barnoldswick). (My great Uncle, Sydney James worked there. He was a pipe smoking, flat-cap wearing working-class man who played bowls and wore a pocket watch and chain. I remember him fondly and his appearance never expressed his day-to-day work on jjet engines. It fascinated me as a child and taught me of the need to avoid stereotypes.) By the way, I know, there are some issues with these productions but give these guys a break. Thanks a lot for those who legitimately point out errors and in any case, we get the chance to see and read about what I guess we all feel is worthy subject content. At least we live in societies where we can counter information and discuss errors. Better to have made an interesting video, than to have made no video at all. (even with some glitches). Thanks. Ad altiora!

Or even if the Mosquito had been built earlier and faster, and adopted earlier and faster as a fighter, although not early enough for the Battle Of Britain, it would have been an ideal long range bomber escort.! . Although as a reconnaissance plane the Mosquito was far more important as nothing could do the job as well... and reconnaissance at the time was incredibly important.

One of the reasons the Metwor gained a reputation as a killer was the single engine thrust line being so far off the centre line of the fuselage. It caused massive yaw with the associated induced roll which if not countered fast enough became a flat spin.
@sandervanderkammen9230 Жыл бұрын
Yes, a fatal flaw that goes back to the aircraft design being hastily converted from twin propeller nightfighter design. The lack of rudder authority combined with terrible asymetric flight characteristics made the "Meat box" a real pilot killer.. an engine failure on take-off was considered unrecoverable.

It's always very important to note the relevant facts obviously. *_Muncherz Krappenz DiktorBummer KARZEESTAN Jurkzxoffenzstadt & co - they should all note with much awe and great wonder._* The ME-262 was limited to running away from allied piston engine fighters & risking engine destruction while doing so & it took 3 downed 262s for each downed allied bomber over Germany where German air inferiority was fairly ubiquitous so there was large swarms of allied bombers available to have a go at.
