Gloucester Schooner Festival, Schooner Ardelle, and a Tribute to David Short-From Pine to Palm, Ep 1

The Gloucester Schooner Festival is really something to behold. Many schooners come to race and to gam, which is what a gathering of them is called. Gamming, back in the day, was when two schooners spotted each other on their way to or from the fishing grounds on the Grand Banks. They would swap stories, news, and send mail with boats that were headed home.
In this video, Harold Burnham dons swim shorts to dive on his own propeller rather than sending crew, cuts the engine in tight quarters and allows Ardelle to carry through some fly bys of cool boats, and arranges for our group of guests to board the boat we just saw arrive at Gloucester. Learn about David Short and his legacy of boats and boat builders who will carry his knowledge and skills forward.

Anne, that was lovely. A great tribute to see so much of David's work in one place. I am sure he was watching from the heavens. Thanks for sharing with us.

Nice music. You might consider making the text a little larger and the onscreen time a tiny bit longer for those of us that are having difficulty. I had to go back and pause a number of times to finish reading stuff. I really enjoyed the details about what we were looking at. Thanks. Referred to you by Acorn to Arabella.

“Proof of life” indeed. You shine a warm glow on why these schooners are worthwhile. And as is typical your videography, narration, captioning are all done with excellence. ⛵️🤩

Well said. I agree completely! Could I ask one favor, to keep your captions on the screen longer. I’m not the fastest reader and the detail that you share is so good that I want to take a second and think about it.

Seems as though a ship that is greater than the sum of its parts can truly still be a part of something great. When form gets in the way of function a museum piece gets burned as scrap. Raised and rooted Midwest nice to see cultural life of those blessed by the sea.

Dear Anne, First of all WIlleke and I feel honored that you made us aware of this KZbin channel. We love to see classic built ships especially when these are sailing with all the sails in top. We love to see these schooners and the beautiful shots you made. The harbor in this vlog looks a bit similar to our Volendam so when you look in Google you might see some similarities. I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands

Wow, what a great splash for this channel! I love it. It felt real, not like a big production. Whenever either (or both) of you two are involved in some boaty youtube thing, it puts a smile on my face. The discussion of a workboat characteristic is interesting. Maybe something to dive more into. I think when you're building your own boat that's not a business, it's easy to get caught up on details that don't matter. Not only that... once launched pretty much every boat looks like a workboat after a couple months in the elements. So it's an interesting question of how to hold back and be real. Conserving wood is a value that can help, as you pointed out. Anyway, I look forward to more from this channel! (but take your time...)
