What a team and Jack Russell simply brilliant. Proud to be from Gloucestewrshire

Sequence from 37:20 shows three Gloucestershire legends on top of their game: lightening quick Russell stumping, Alleyne run out and Harvey wicket (and a brilliant Russell take). Outstanding team who won 5 trophies in 2 years - and would have beaten the England team of that period hands down.

230 off 50 overs "a good score". Different times. Jack Russell - top drawer keeper and so many times he made crucial runs for county and country.

I was there aged 12. "Stand up for the west country" ringing out the whole second innings. Jack Russell absolutely miles out his crease backing up. Would be run out today.

Jack was the last of the specialist keepers, rated him as number two of the glovemen I've seen to bob taylor

I agree with you. I used to watch Kent regularly in the 1970s and much though I admired Alan Knott's fitness and athleticism, Bob Taylor was the better keeper. He used to take the ball so cleanly and his footwork rarely left him out of position. Jack Russell was an artist with the gloves in the same vein.

@@geoffreyking4515 Totally agree. Knott always gets the nod when these all-time XIs are picked, but I would always go for Taylor; when you have a best-ever six batters filling the top 6 positions, you can afford to pick the best keeper regardless of their batting prowess. And it's not as if Taylor was a rabbit with the bat - he often made useful runs for Derbyshire and England :-)

Great reminder of the start of happy years for the Glorious Glosters. Still can't quite believe Somerset put us into bat, given our record of defending totals. Good match tho, perhaps the difference was we could bowl straight and field well, only 9 extras, whereas Somerset's youngsters had a bit of a mare, 24 extras. Oh yes, we had Jack too.

That take down the leg side from Michael Cawdron at 39:38 is stunning.

I remember, years and years ago, watching a match at Cheltenham. I can't recall who Gloucester were playing but I remember that Dave Thomas, the former Surrey player, was bowling and I thought it looked pretty quick. Lo and behold, Jack Russell chose to stand up to him and kept as easily as if he were keeping to a particularly slow village off spinner. The best keeper that I have ever seen and, if I were picking an all-time world eleven, would be the first on my list.

@paulp9557 Hello again. Do you have Worcestershire vs. Lancashire (C&G Trophy, August 9th, 2003)? I remember it was broadcast live on Channel 4.

Why did Richie always call Barnett BarNETT?

Seems like Kim Barnett outfoxed Jarvis with his unorthodox stance
