I've been at Hadrian's Wall at Housesteads Roman Fort, and it is very interesting. Surprisingly the Tyne Valley Line(Newcastle & Carlisle Railway) was the one who rediscovered Hadrian's Wall, back in the 1830s. Construction of the 60 mile(97km) long railway line begun in 1834 and opened in 1838 as the first English railway to cross the country from coast to coast.

Loved that!! I did all of Hadrian's Wall in the early 1990s using the train -- before the route was turned into a proper long-distance path. It was January cold, frost and snow, and just as for you, deserted and beautiful.

If you find yourself in Haltwhistle again, and have time, head down to the river south Tyne. If you're at the right time of year you'll see the salmon leaping up the weir. Also, going from the town to hadrians wall, follow Haltwhistle Burn. Nice walk with waterfalls.

Many a morning spent at Newcastle, usually around 6am, with a beer and a Gregg's breakfast, in my hi-vis vest, confusing other passengers with random information when asked questions, waiting on the first service to Morpeth. (I should point out I was a night shift worker) The 210 bar at Carlisle does some good Ales, and the wee coffee stand has a mean Latte.

At 06:48 Lough is similar to the Scottish Loch (and identical to the Irish Lough). Think of this term. Cleuch in Scotland; cleugh in Northumberland; & clough in Yorkshire. Meaning an opinionated football club manager.

If you get the Tyne and Wear Metro you can ride to the eastern end of the Wall at Wallsend. The western end is a bit more of a challenge as Bowness on Solway is served by a pretty infrequent bus from Carlisle and they are always threatening to cancel it.Brampton,Haltwhistle ,Haydon Bridge,Corbridge are I think the only Coop's along that line but the Brampton one is pretty far to walk.

One of my favourite lines in the UK....and as a massive history nerd, you can't beat Hadrian's Wall....and in that weather you can just imagine the Romans freezing cold, wondering what on Earth they were thinking about leaving the lush warmth of the Italian peninsula, whilst watching for angry ginger people running across the open plains to attack them 😂😂😂😂
