I called Adorama and changed my WHITE to SILVER just in time after watching this video. Made a lot of sense with the silver option. Thanks Robert!
@jeffpeterson55283 жыл бұрын
With the white cover, you have white...the only time it makes a difference is when used as a beauty disk. Also light bouncing around inside does not cause yellow...age causes yellow. Flashes are not UV light and don't degrade colors. Even if it was UV...the flash is so quick it would take hundreds of years to even degrade even a little. So if it turns yellow...it's just old.
@deenugent4733 жыл бұрын
@@jeffpeterson5528 - Thanks for your input Jeff! I figured that with the white cover, both inside and outside, it would be good enough. At the same time, I could use the silver one if I wanted to.

I have an 60" octabox from paul c buff for 5+ years now hasn't yellowed. You will see a difference with a silver interior and white interior regardless of diffusers . I always choose white interior over silver, because white in my opinion looks better for skin tones over silver.

@03:19 You mentioned worrying about the material tearing. Well, it tears. At least mine arrived with a tear, and it gets a bit larger every time you set the beauty dish up. I don't have tons of experience with light modifiers but I liked the Glow EZ Lock Beauty Dish during the brief time I used it. The representatives at Adorama were very helpful and paid for return shipping on the product. I ordered a replacement and keeping my fingers crossed hoping the tear was a one-off. Btw, this was a great review video and was the reason I ordered the initial 34" Beauty Dish.

Those prices are insane. I love what I got from Cheetahstand and don't need additional modifiers right now. Once I kind of decide on someone, I usually stick to it so I will probably replace what I have with more Cheetahstand modifiers over time. If I were new and wanted to save every $$ I am positive I would be going for these at those prices. It is such a great time to get into photography...more capable cameras, all kinds of competition from 3rd party lenses, amazing and inexpensive lithium powered lights from Godox (and others are rising to the occasion so more choices coming) and amazing, innovative modifiers at great prices. It all adds up to faster, easier setups and better photos. That means more money for photographers!

FYI, the standard industry test for fabric strength is called the Mullen Burst test, where a hydraulic cylinder is placed against a fabric sample clamped in place, and pressure is increased until the fabric ruptures, which stops the test, and a gauge shows the pressure at the point of rupture. The test equipment and process is shown in the link below, although it shows the test being done on leather rather than fabric. I worked in an industry providing a wide variety of industrial fabrics to manufacturing companies, and a Mullen Burst value was always included in fabric specifications (we had the test equipment in our plant). kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4PKmGeugtloe80

I'm still learning about light modifiers, but I would think the benefit of a white interior is the ability to use it directly as a White Beauty Dish with no diffusion spreading the light. The silver interior with diffusion would just turn this Beauty Dish into a Round Softbox and wrap the light around the subject, right? It wouldn't act like a White Beauty Dish at that point.

Thanks for this video. I just bought a Cheetahstand 26" version and so far I like it. I got it because my Mola Demi, which I love, is awkward to travel with. The Cheetah does have a pebbled silver interior which may make some difference compared to the smooth interiors of these but the price is higher. I still love the smooth tonal transitions of the Mola compared to this but for travel you can't beat these (Cheetah or Glow, I am looking forward to your comparisons). I now considering two of Glow EZ lock small rectangular softboxs or stripbox for edge lights for that now in favor edgy sports look. For location travel and quick setup this should be great. I have a couple of older Photoflex Halfdomes and the Cheetah RBs but these are a pain to setup and break down. I may get one 20" Deep Para and the largest one and sell off the Cheetahs! However I do occasional use the large Cheetah Deep para and that chopstick thingy to focus the light which you can't do with the EZ lock versions. How is the quality of the grids for the Glow series?

Size of light modifier will be the same in video. Bigger light = softer light. In video it's also tougher to bounce light because they aren't very powerful. Hey there. I have not taken any of them out of commission. I intentionally beat on one in specific, the 28" deep parabolic, for about 18 months hoping to find the point at which it would break in some way. I used it as my primary key light for all of my editorial work - and when not in use I left it outside of it's case in the trunk of my car. While it's outer diffusion has stains from being laid face down on the ground repeatedly, and the exterior has scratches from me leaving it open as I go through doorways, the softbox still functions as if new. Actually, it's a bit nicer now since the opening mechanism is "broken in" and collapses more easily. I've also since added quite a few of the EZ Lock Quick Octas and strip boxes to my rental studio. 6 in particular stay open and available full-time. We have had one strip box have 1of it's four 4 elastic straps to hold the inner diffusion break, but other than that it's been uneventful.

While the prices are low ( like you said just 5 years ago these would have been $500) and the quality is great (I think they are of high quality and even with heavy location shoots they will easily last 5-10 years..The nylon is at least 330D and that has fantastic tear resistance but onky moderate abrasion resistance. This is opposed to 1000D which has great abrasion resistance but once it's cut you had to burn the frays or they will keep going. So to me the weak link is the mechanisms and it feels very solid to me. So I just don't see it failing before 5 years and then you buy a new one. With that life cycle you could be 20 years down the road and finally reach the cost of a Westcott.. which IS better quality but not a 25 year box. I also think the beauty dish themselves are a waste of money. I think the 38" will everything any of the three BD will do and anything they smaller para's will do as well. It has amazing throw, great light shape, put the dish in and it really tightens it up, there inside diffuser with the double layer does am great job of fall off, then the outside and the egg crate acts like a medium soft box key light. I love it and with the ad600 I can shoot with just it from morning through high noon and not a cloud in the sky and then all the way into dusk. It truly is a jack of all trades and a master of a few of those.
