That's so wonderful, I can't wait to show my granddaughter! I wish we could do something with the nice designs afterward like transferring it onto paper.

This is amazing. I had only seen this experiment with milk, but I love the color spread - and we can resuse the glue afterwards! Thank you for sharing.

Yes this is one of my favorite experiments. Yes you should be able to use the glue, though I have never tried before as we let it dry for a couple days and it becomes a work of art. Thanks Ken.

Good Morning @stephanien6237, Yes it sometimes takes a day or 2 depending how thick the glue is, but it will harden. Thanks Ken

Can you use other types of dye, such as candle dyes?
@KidsFunScience28 күн бұрын
Good Morning @shibolinemress8913, Good question. I don't know as I have always just used food coloring. I would assume it would work. If you try it please let me know your results. thanks Ken
@shibolinemress891328 күн бұрын
@KidsFunScience I did try candle dye, and the results were interesting. The colours were more muted and didn't spread as quickly. At first I thought nothing was happening, but after a while I did get some interesting shapes. But for explosions of vibrant colour, food dye is the way to go.

I wonder if this would work with UV cure resin, once the pattern is how you want it blast it with UV cure to "freeze" in the pattern?

We just finished this experiment and looking for an explanation as to why the patterns come out the way they do. The patterns look different than the milk experiment. The milk experiment the colors get pushed around and we noticed they continue to move and swirl after the colors are done expanding. This experiment the patterns look like branches. Is there a reason behind the different reactions you know of? Would this be considered Raleigh Taylor instability effect?
@KidsFunScience2 жыл бұрын
Morning Tucker Time, Elmer’s glue has water in it and chemical compound called polyvinyl acetate. These long flexible molecules are moving around in the water like intertwined strands of hair. When the food coloring drops are added, they are prevented from spreading out much by the combination of water and polyvinyl acetate molecules. So soap molecules push the glue molecules around. I hope this helps. I do not know if this is considered Raleigh Taylor Instability Effect. IF you find out please let me know? thanks Ken

Cool,how long does it hold the design?
@KidsFunScience3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kai abdelhalim, Well my held for about 15 minutes. Some ideas to make it last longer Maybe if I made a thinner layer of glue or boxed in the glue to a circle so it could not keep moving it would dry and last long. Let me know if you figure out a way to make it last? thx Ken

Does this work with any glue? Like elmers?
@KidsFunScience Жыл бұрын
Hi Saryah, It should work with Elemers. You might have to add a tiny bit of water if it doesn't work. I have not tried it with other types of glue. If you try please let me know? thanks Ken

This is wild! I'm a soap maker and I'm wondering how I could do this on poured soap in a slab mold instead of on glue and still get the same effect. Also- does the glue get hard enough so it could be mounted on a wall, and I'm thinking how this could be done on poured acrylic and still get the same starburst effect? 😄🤗💜

Good Morning Dora, I think it should work, but I have not worked with soap before. as long as the soap was a liquid form, then put in food coloring and then add dish soap. If you try please let me know as I would love to hear if it works? Depending on how thick the glue is, it will dry and makes a nice design, though its not the same lighting bolts design, as it blends in more with the glue, but makes a nice design and I was able to hang it up. I think it took 2 days for it to dry for me. Just try to keep the glue at a thin layer. thanks Ken

What happens when you add water to the glue on a real plate
@KidsFunScience Жыл бұрын
Good Morning Donna, Adding water to the glue will help the colors move more rapid. I usually don't add water, as I like to slower effect of the colors, but water can help the experiment. Just don't add too much water and stir the glue and water together before you add food coloring and soap. As for real plate I think it would be fine, as the glue drys and should come off the plate, but I have never tried it on a real plate before. If you try it on the real plate let me know your results. thanks Ken
