I have a Rolex but it's now too expensive to service and buy. It used to be my workhorse watch but has become a fashion item for posers. I bought the Steinhart Vintage Red when the Rolex was away for 6 weeks being serviced for Euros 1000 !!! I now wear the Steinhart and many times forget that it's not my Rolex which is now in the safe.

Glycine deserves much more attention and respect than they currently receive. I see them on par with Hamilton and Tissot. The Airman and combat sub lines are strong enough to keep the brand going. They suffer from poor marketing and inconsistent pricing. Their heavily discounted prices give the impression of them being cheap when that’s not the case. They should have been part of the swatch group. The brand needs to make some organizational changes.

I love the Steinhart its just a classy looking sub. The glycine is also a good looking watch but i like the look of solid end links and i love ceramic or sapphire bezels. Steinhart just makes a good solid watch with high end materials for the price.

I guess you mean fitted end-links? I'd guess he has his Glycine on an aftermarket bracelet with straight end-links. The factory one has end-links that sit flush with the case and that leave no gap between the case and the bracelet. Also: Since it's a vintage piece, this version of the Steinhart doesn't have a ceramic bezel insert, either.

It's case is entirely different, its bezel insert lacks the "10" that Rolex has, its dial is dark-grey instead of black... to name only a few differences. I went with a Glycine specifically because it doesn't look like it's trying to be a Rolex. I can wear it in uniform or at an office, under a sleeve if I wish. Steinhart undoubtedly makes great watches, but I'd rather have a slimmer and more utilitarian original design. I can tell military time regardless, but that addition on the face is useful as well. That said, I wear a Gshock mostly while on the clock lol

I have the Combat Sub 36. Amazing for the money. Butterfly clasp is the only issue. Can't get it to fit right. Would love a 42mm but I have a 6.5" wrist. I don't think I can pull it off.

Both watches are nice. I give the nod to the Steinhart for its vintage dial, crystal, and lume designs. The Steinhart looks like a vintage watch without the price tag and servicing costs of a vintage watch.

I recenly got the Glycine Combat Sub and I have to say that I am floored big time about the quality of this great watch. I currently also have two Rolex, one GMT and one Submariner. I previously owned two othe Rolexes, one Explorer II and one Datejust from the 80s. But I have to admit, I prefer the Glycine. Who said that the Glycine is an "entry level watch"? That is by no means a true statement. In many aspects the Glycine is a better watch when it comes to quality.

The Steinhart is a copy of the ROLEX SEA-DWELLER DOUBLE RED 1665, which is out of production for decades, and usually has a five digit price tag. If you can find one...

Glycine is Swiss so it's pronounced more like 'glee - tsee - nuh' or 'glee - tseen'. Also, not all of their watches have ETA movements, mine are fitted with Sellita SW 200-1. If you buy one you will have to open it to find out what movement is in there.

I own a Steinhart Ocean One Titanium GMT and a Glycine Airman Base 22 - 24 hour purist. My Glycine has already needed repair within one month. The customer service is horrible and their warranty is not worth the paper it’s written on (Invicta type warranty). By far, the Steinhart is the much better watch. In fact in performance, the Steinhart performs as well if not better than my Rolex, Omega, Oris and Ball Watches. I am surprised you chose Glycine.

When did Invicta buy out Glycine? The difference may lie in pre-Invicta v. post Invicta takeover. I know of others who also had problems with hour hand alignment too (problem) who were recent purchasers. It turned out that the hour hand just needed realignment and tightening. My problem with their customer service is that they wouldn’t replace it rather they directed me to 3rd party service center which required $50 before servicing and not receive it back until 3 months later. With a warranty like that I decided to take it to my local watch repair in which they repaired it in a day for $20

It is absolutely unimportant who owns who. Do you refer to Volvo as a Geely? Or Jaguar as Tata? Glycine is historicaly comparatively way more significant brand than Steinhart. Glycine has important models for horology (such as Airman) where they brought something new to the table. They both go their own way, no point to deride somebodys choice. I would not put a hommage watch on the same level as a model line which was introduced over 50 years ago....

Looks like you have the Glycine 42MM Combat Sub. Have you tried out the 46MM version (GL0257)? I got that one from Costco for $299. In addition to the Water Resistance being bumped from 200M to 300M and the 60 click Brazil rotation being doubled to 120 clicks, you may notice that the Glycine Logo on the back of the case isn't laser-etched, but embossed - these little touches make a great watch even better!

Good review. But disagree on the durability rating. Thin case does not equal lower durability. Omega Seamasters have thin cases and they are very durable as an example.

Glycine any day of the week. Despite being bought by Invicta there brand is much more reputable and prestigious (being founded in 1914) I own an airman and a gl0083 combat sub 42. Both I bought around the time when my fiancé was about to give birth to our kids. I have both of our kids birth dates engraved on the back of both glycines. So maybe my judgement may be clouded but I absolutely love the brand!

Be wary of Steinhart watches. I've purchased 3 and 2 have problems. The crown fell off one. The worst part is the fact that you have to send it to the company in Germany for service/repair. I'm not shipping a watch to Germany from USA. At least Glycine has a USA facility. I've recently acquired 2 Glycine watches.

You had me sold on comfort. Literally was deciding between these two (and looking at squale and yema as strong possibles too). Have had issues with large rounded case backs not sitting correctly and also with long straight lugs ruining the comfort and on wrist seating. Thanks for bringing up those factors in your review.

Man, what world are we living in? What people are you guys associating with? The people I know wouldn’t care about this that much. They might be curious, they might have an opinion about it (perhaps being amused or not keen on products which mimic others) but they would never make a big deal out of it. And since when is a 400 dollar watch not luxurious enough on our wrist? I am not saying it is luxury (most of the more known bigger names aren’t considered to be either) but many people wear watches which cost far less.

I feel that in some ways, despite the Steinhart Ocean Vintage Red being a larger watch, it could perhaps fit into formal occasions more easily due to the dial design. The dials and hands are more reminiscent of a field watch whereas with the Steinhart (and, of course, the Rolex design), it looks like something that is more versatile, just in the same way a Submariner is extremely versatile.

So hard to decide between the two brands. I've narrowed down my list, eliminating a few micro-brands and now I'm down to the Combat Sub 0249 (orange chapter ring dial, metal bracelet), the Steinhart OVM and the Steinhart 39 Vintage GMT Premium (ceramic Pepsi). Or perhaps the 39 Premium GMT Batman? Damn... told you this was hard... :D Problem is that I'll only be able to try out the Steinharts in person (their German dealer is about 40 mins from my town) and I'd have to buy the Glycine sight unseen. In a perfect world, I'd get all three (four) - I like them all that much. But, yeah... so far, I'm leaning towards Steinhart, if only because I would be able to try them out and buy from a brick-and-mortar-store.

Against my better judgement,i bought an invicta with the yellow seiko mvmnt. Ignored the bad press. First time in the pool the invicta filled w water. No big deal.thought id just return it get another one.cust service was non existant and they basically laughed at me. So if glycene was bought by invicta caveat emptor. Wont EVER do business with any of their companies ever again. Thanks for the review. If you like lume, go for the Glycine. It's better than the Seiko Divers. I have a bronze Combat Sub. It's an awesome piece. If you like the more bulcky and homage watches, go for a Steinhart. Great quality for a small price.

Points to glyicine for being a more original design and for being slimmer. Knock for glycine for the whacky marketing and pricing, thanks invicta. Point to steinhart for being well made. But deduction for being a blatant submariner homage. But overall, there is not a lot of room for variation in terms of a black dive watch. Rolex made the template and everybody else mostly follows. Brushed finish with polished accents, Knurled 60 minute black bezel with lume pip at 12, 3'clock date window, white markers with accentuated 12, 6 and 9 and lume, large legible lumed handset, 3'oclock crown with crown guards and an oyster style bracelet. As far as dive watches go, at least panerai offer something different, the pasha de cartier too, or the longines super compressor style dive watch.

You're only seeing that because it is a straight end link and not the original bracelet that comes with the glycine, which fits to the lug curved. If you bought the glycine you would have the bracelet fit as you see it fitting the steinhardt.

I out score this quite different. Glycine would take it away by a much larger margin. I think the glycine has the best shaped case lugs of any dive watch out there. It's the thinnest dive watch made today. That is no small task that is some seriously genius Manufacturing. Steinhart watches are huge in case thickness and that's a big thing that keeps me away other than them being a COPY. A Parnis actually has better machining than steinhart. Ceramic bezels on ever watch.

@@EverydayWatchGuy I own the Steinhart and it's superb, and perhaps one day I may purchase a Glycine. Unfortunately Glycine watches are hard to pick up in the UK, especially at a good price. My comment was regarding your video format, not the actual content. Interesting comparison, and I enjoyed the video.

@@petrparizek6575 Yes and? It is the Swatch company. Omega and other Swiss brands (Blancpain, Mido, Tissot, Hamilton and others) continue to produce their watches independently. Invicta bought the brand name Invicta and produces junk watches, pretending to be a luxury manufacturer. Price tag $600, sells for $99. They seem to be doing something similar with Gylcine now. Has anyone ever paid the original price of an Invicta? I don't think so.

Would definitely not say they are the best entry-level watches. Davosa among others are better quality swiss entry level watches

Davosa is not really better only tje lume. The Movements are the same. The WR is 300 for Steinhart and 200 for davosa.

@@Shadowwalker1717 The build Quality is better wasn't talking about the movement. And not sure about the movement but there are different 3 or 4 different grades of the ETA 2824 And I believe Davosa does use a better grade ETA not just the standard.

German company... Chinese made actually with the swiss eta movement being the only part swiss made...they are allowed to have the swiss made logo only because the movement makes up more than 50% of the cost to make it

The lume is fairly on par with each other. I think the Glycine is more intense, but the Steinhart has more surface area for the lume.

Not a very unbiased review in my opinion. Immediately, you leaned towards the Glycine. Even the marker you used to over the scores was Glycine literature. And the reasons behind it, proves as such.

Sorry you feel that way. I try to approach all of my reviews unbiased and on my personal experience with the watches. The Glycine literature was only in the video because it covered the score-card really well, while the Steinhart literature was smaller. You can see by the scores that I love both pieces and they are both excellent watches. At the end of the day, its just my humble opinion and you can take it or leave it, no worries.

Didn't even have to watch video. In his videos, the marker he uses to block scores, always details the winner. Very biased towards the Glycine.

Nice Glycine, but that Miltat oyster bracelet has SHARP EDGES, like a DULL KNIFE SCRAPING THE SKIN, and you do not mention anything about it, as if you are not responsible for the marketing effect of its mere presence married to your GLycine watch. If you don’t understand this criticism, then you are not worthy of the viewers’ attention. So, good bye to ya!

Bad illumination. You need another light above to illuminate the watches. The watches are in shadow , specially when you take the watch in your hands. Bad video lighting.

Invicta owning Glycine only opened up more marketing for Glycine...nothing more. Glycine is still manufactured in the same place by the same people etc...nothings else has changed.

That's like saying you have your own business. A big business comes in and say they want to give you a bunch of money for marketing and you can still run your company exactly as you see fit. And your same factories same Parts everything they just want to help you out with some money in marketing. Yeah of course you're going to say no 🤦🏽‍♂️ 🤔.
