Throw some automation on this, turn your laugh down and turn Glyn Johns up! Your laugh damn near blew my laptop speakers. Great video BTW... Thanks!!!

I've used a very similar set up to this a bunch of times. Today I slightly changed the angle of my overhead to replicate Glyn Johns' method. It worked an absolute treat! The drummer I recorded with was blown away at the mix and tone of the kit. Thanks for the vid

Glyn is/was my old school chum and when we left school he got a job at IBC studios and I had formed a rock band called The Presidents. At weekends Glyn would invite us up to the studio and try out his new skills and the combination got us signed to Decca Records. Here is a link to one of the tracks we recorded with Glyn at the controls which was passed to Decca but somehow got lost BUT was found in LA in 2018 and released that June - so here one hears one of his earliest productions mimed with the original line up which I managed to get together. Please share the link - @

Would be cool if one of the students recorded with one of those mics so I could hear a word he's saying.

Audio engineers go crazy when the audio is encoded within the video, it's like an invisible force field.

2 valve mics (Neumann) set at equal distance from the snare, one above the snare aimed at the snare, the other one beside the floor tom aimed at the snare drum, and a bass drum mic in front of the bass drum. Nice energetic kit sound.
@veerchasm16 жыл бұрын
Just used this, having the snare mic’d is almost redundant. It’s beautifully simple and effective

jesus people, it's a great bit of info, you CAN hear it, and if it's an option between having the knowledge of this video (with poor audio quality) and not having anything at all...well, I appreciate that this video exists.

Thank you for sharing. Could someone please do a pass on the levels of this video please? Ironic that the audio is so bad don't you think?

I'm a drummer who writes tunes. I ALWAYS use the GJ method as a base, then add snare mic, kick mic, sub kick mic, tom mics. The imaging you get is top top. Sometimes you have to adjust cymbal height so you don't get whooshing by the floor tom mic. I swear by it!
@ElectricLabel5 жыл бұрын
I have found you can avoid that if you use a small diaphragm condenser in that position, such an AKG C1000. Aim it at the snare, give it a bit more height so it avoids the underside of the ride, and then you can have the cymbal where you want it. You get slightly less coverage of the kick drum on that mic, but other than that there isn't much noticeable compromise.

couldn't have said it better myself....this man (at least in my view) is in part responsible for the album 'Who's Next', pulling Pete Townshend out of his rut from 'Lifehouse' to create an album of great songs...it's their best record in my view. Todays engineers have nothing on the likes Glyn & Andy Johns, Eddie Kramer & Alan Parsons.

As he points out, this assumes the drummer "balances" his playing, not all drummers do that, or even know what that means.

+Tracy Eaves Leading up, he jokes that he "wouldn't make a cup of tea on" the console in the other room, but goes on to say, "but with MOST consoles, I found this works really well; if you open up the mic amp 10db more than you should, and operate the faders 10 db lower, basically. I guarantee you, if you DO ever get 'round to trying this, you'll think it doesn't work, because it doesn't look to you like it will, because you're used to the idea that HAVE to have a snare drum mic..."
@tracyeaves48478 жыл бұрын
+BRIAN VIGLIONE - Thanks for replying! it makes sense to get more out of the pre amp or tax it or saturate it more for some color or richness. Actually I am not used to using a snare mic, but rely on OH. I accidentally had the input gain up to high on an analog recording and found out some elements sounded rich in the mid and upper octaves. Was thinking of multing a channel and saturate it and add it in.

How about Phase's problem? This technique avoid it?
@DepressedCapitalist7 жыл бұрын
Im one year later but the side mic and the overhead mic should be at the same distance from the snare. Use a guitar cable. Have the drummer (make him work for once!) hold the cable tight on top of the center of the snare and measure the distance from there to the upper mic and from there to the floor tom side mic. Exact distances will result in no phase issues.
@dcp1020010 жыл бұрын
When I record drums I exclusivly use the Glyn Johns technique. The results are very good as it captures the way the drums sound naturally in the room. I use an omnidirectional pencil condenser centered over the snareto really get the height in the recording and a ribbon mic pointing at the high hat over the floor tom so I get some room ambiance with a kick mic and a top and bottom snare but it even works with no snare mic as johns has mentioned in the video
@AndrewsFlights4 жыл бұрын
How he pan? Hard left and right?
@brotherbuddyfellow4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the general rule with this is to pan the overhead over the snare halfway to the right and the one over the floor tom hard left.
