This was a very interesting cocktail! I have a question (not about the drink). I am a cheap bum when it comes to buying things that come in brown bags. What are your recommended essentials to give the most variety of cocktails and drinks?
@DrillingInTheNameOf2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, bitters, lemon juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and demerara syrup. They're all cheap and open up a huge variety of cocktails. With lime/lemon and simple alone, you could make gimlets (vodka or gin), daiquiris (rum), mojitos (mint and rum), caipirinhas (cachaca), Southsides (mint and gin or vodka), whiskey/pisco sours (whiskey/pisco and egg white), Tom Collins (gin or vodka), French 75s (gin and sparkling wine), etc. With demerara syrup and bitters, that opens up the classic old fashioned tree (base of bourbon, demerara syrup, and bitters). You can very easily modify this by using something other than bourbon (like rum or mezcal) or infusing the ingredients (like the pumpkin spice in the video or, say, toasted coconut in the demerara). If you add an orange liqueur to the list, that brings in a huge list of classics: margaritas, sidecars, Cosmos, white ladies, etc. I'm not really an academic person by nature and I don't really read cocktail literature, but if there's one book I'd recommend, it's the Cocktail Codex. It basically breaks down all cocktails to six root recipes and really helps increase your understanding of builds and balance.

Thanks for the vermouth recs, you mentioned the price and it's especially prohibitave to someone trying 3 or 4 bottles at home to find their preference. Then, factor in that all those bottles will probably expire and it's a difficult thing to get into. The pickaxe garnish is a great idea!
@DrillingInTheNameOf2 жыл бұрын
There's so much out there. Thankfully Carpano does make 375mL bottles so you can try it for around $15 before you buy a big bottle. Noilly Pratt is a good one for something really affordable, though I wouldn't drink it on its own. I've had a couple Spanish vermouths lately that I really like (Atxa and Muz). Both are very herbaceous and woodsy. Dolin dry and blanc are both great and affordable white vermouths. The blanc is citrusy and floral and I like it in gin martinis that are heavy on the vermouth. Quinquina is also worth a try. Mattei blanc and rouge are both great if you ever see them. I typically drink those on their own.

the magnetic stirrer is genius. love it. also, the pickaxe garnish lmao also, this is much less weird than i thought it would be, granted i don't know anything about alcohol. guess the expression in the thumbnail was just to match the gut reaction people have to hearing about consuming bugs. the lighting in your bar set isn't playing well with your camera, so the video appears grainy. i'm not very knowledgable in camera operation, but it seems like if you're not planning on changing the lighting setup in there, it may be a good idea to change the shutter speed/ iso balance to decrease ISO, or increase your aperature size. the shot of your setup wasn't detailed enough for me to make an assesment of your camera, especially since i don't even know what i'm looking at, but if you want to increase production quality, that'd be a good bump to it.
