GM 3.1 Intake Manifold and Timing Cover Reseal
In this video I have a 1998 Buick with a 3.1 liter engine and it has a couple of leaks. Timing cover is leaking oil and intake manifold is leaking oil and coolant, fortunately this is job is not too hard to do and is not super expensive to fix. The 3.1 is very similar to the 3.4 and 3.8 liter engines. I am going to show you how to reseal this timing cover and intake manifold in this video. Let's get going.

Best how-to video...ever. You sir, are a true proffessional. Perfect filming, audio track, and details. A complicated job, for such a minor problem. I've been a mechanic for 50 yrs, and this is intimdating. But your video is an excellent tool. Thanks.

Great great video. Thank you so much. Pretty handy with tools but was a little scared but with this straight forward to the point video , I know I can easily do this job myself. Thank you buddy for sharing and teaching.

I was surprised that you had trouble with the liquid thread sealant 🤔 I did this job on a 1989 3.1 a few years back and didn’t have that issue but I'm doing this job on a 3400 right now and wondering if I should use the tape. Best video I've seen on this job by far. I like that you took the time to point out all the little details that are important!👍

The funny thing is I have done a bunch of these back in the day and do not recall having issues with that bolt before. I would personally use the tape just to make sure you do not have issues. Thank you

@NutsandBoltswithTone I am praying that the leak is really the timing cover and not the rear head. There's a portion of the timing cover that obscures that inner back corner of the head, the pressure test isolated the leak at that area but I still couldn't pinpoint it for sure with the timing cover on. I did the head gaskets and LIM gaskets about 4 years ago...heads were machined, new valve guides/seals and its been great. Really hoping and praying it's not the heads again😣🙏

Thanks for always showing torque values, do you have a library where you keep these papers in case you get a job like this again? possibly take PICs and store that on your hard drive? This information is not always easy to locate in Service Info, cheers.

You are welcome, I only keep diesel specs for common repairs, I look up all the specs. Generally when I am doing a job like this I go through the service info and write down all the specs in one spot to make it easier. Finding specs in service info is not always easy for sure.

Have you run into any problems with the intake using the Scotch Rite pad? Scratching or changing the tolerances of the intake?

@NutsandBoltswithTone thank you and merry Christmas, let me pick your brain with one more dum question but on the timing chain cover do you only put silicon on the bottom? Or will it be over kill putting it around the timing chain cover with the gasket
