Many GM vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions manufactured in the early 2000s use an automatic transmission shifter cable that has a neoprene retainer to connect it to the transmission.
That cable connection to the transmission is located right next to a catalytic converter which exposes the neoprene retainer to intense amount of high heat.
The heat exposure degrades the neoprene retainer material to the point of failure which allows the cable to disconnect from the transmission leaving the vehicle owner with no way of selecting any gear in the automatic transmission.
I show you how to install an automatic transmission shift cable repair kit that was originally developed by Richard Bellville which is a well known person in the Chevy SSR owner community.

Any tips on how to remove the brake light switch on a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 ? I got the 10 mm bolt out but can't get the clip holding the switch to the brake pedal off ?

I haven't worked on a Sierra 1500 brake light switch. The Chevy SSR had a clip that you would need to pull out far enough to allow it to slide past the pin going through the switch/pedal.

Since this was a valid fix for the 2003-2004 SSR with the 4L60E transmission and the 2005-2006 SSR with the 4L65E transmission, my guess would be that yes it is likely the transmission shift cable in the 2008 Tahoe could use it as well.

There are two bushings used on the automatic transmission shift cable. One down by the transmission (in this video) and one up by the gear selector. Sometimes (far less rare), the bushing up by the gear selector will fail causing the gear selector to be disconnected from the cable. It can be a bit challenging getting to the upper bushing, but not impossible and it can be replaced with a Dorman replacement bushing available at most any auto parts store.

This style of gear shift linkage connector was used on a large number of GM vehicles. If the connector looks like the one in the video, then it should work. I don't have a year/make/model listing for the product since it was a vehicle owner developed solution to a problem that was discovered with a large number of the 2003-2006 Chevy SSR pickups. The SSR is based on the Trailblazer EXT platform so most Trailblazer and GMC Envoys should also be able to use it. The SSR comes with a 4L60E or 4L65E automatic transmission, so any vehicle with those transmissions should be able to use this same kit.
