Gm Bus 3703 getting back on the road

This was a project bus from this past year. I re-edited the whole project into one video. This bus had been off the road for 21 years and sitting in the dirt under a tree for 16 years. We got it up and running and moved to its new home in Idaho from Oregon. It ran beautifully and i can’t wait to see it when the conversion gets completed.

I've been watching some of these vintage bus videos recently and all I can say is that I am amazed at how these diesel engines sit for ages and fire up with very little effort other than fuel and batteries; truly impressive motors, not like some of the ones we have today!

We have back home bus old Mercedes seating 30 years ,friend of mine told me he can start i told him impossible , well bus started with new batteries and 50 l of diesel .That engine all mechanical so noting for mice to eat on.

plus in great shape for its age, paint is nice, nothing seemed rotted or broken, ran very well, surprisingly fast for a 4/71, she hogged up that grade very nicely, sounded great.. needed very little to get it going again from what I so. the 4/71 is only 4.5 liters, and she did 70 mph with it..up hill.. Imagine a 6/71t in that thing, re manned, 0 hours, bus is great from what I can see, I wouldn't hesitate to invest in her.. drop a nice wad making it perfect again, as long as nothing major is gone on her.. ground up resto, get all the pesky problems solved, go right through the drive line , and re do everything (maybe change to a spicer overdrive for commonality) , don't know what this guys budget is, but the thing is almost a museum piece, perfect candidate for a quality re do..

It's an Awesome sight to see it cruising down the road like it was never parked up for 2 Decades. I have a new respect for the Old Detroit.

You know what would be just beautifull? If such an old Grey Hound could be restored to its formal glory, and advertise to tour people in it again for the sake of the golden old past.... but that's just me. Would've loved something like that here in South Africa in the beautifull Western Cape. Tour you guys from over there here in my country and show you the beauty (while it still exist, although probably not for much longer, sad to say).

Boy does that bus bring back memories of the 50s and 60s on the Salt Lake City Buses that I used to take from 21st south to South Temple.. to see movies and walk around Temple Square.. Thank you for bringing this amazing bus back to life.. Of course we didn't have bunks on them.. lol

Wow! I love it. I wish I could drive one of the old GM's! I drove city, charter, and tour buses for over 30 years, and was a collector of bus memorabilia and photos. I loved the old PD's, and yet they were all out of service by the time I started driving professionally in 1973. Mostly, I drove the more recent "Buffalos," until I went to city buses; then later, Prevosts and MCI's in charter and tour service throughout the southwest. At 67, I sit around here in Tennessee and there is nothing for me to do. Best of luck to you on this find!

As a teen in the 70’s I watched my grandfather work on many V71’s. Looking at and hearing any Detroit diesel brings back fond memories. He worked on a fleet of concrete trucks and my first impression was the diaper they needed for oil drips. Lol

@Open Roader ..., People don't realize that the old Detroit Diesels were virtually Bullet Proof and from the little 2v all the way up to the 16v the rockers , injectors , pumps etc were interchangeable... These 2 cycle diesels were the work horse for the American road ways for decades... a friend of mine owns Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Breakdown 1953? GM tour bus and I know it was still driving and touring w/ a bluegrass band in 2015... Many Blessings , SMR

I drove Greyhounds in the 80s in Northern Ontario, Canada. MCI 5s, 7s, 8s and a pair of MCI 9s, powered by 6 cylinder engines, on a long term test. Those 2 busses were in the fleet for only a few months, before they were pulled from service, and converted to 8 cylinder powerplants. Driving 'the Hound' provided me with a lifetime of memories!

That is awesome to those old GM’s on the road getting the job done amazing, brings back memories in Portland and riding the 04’s and 06’s of the rose city transit company when I was a growing up. I always like to sit in the back of the bus on the long seat over the engine to listen to engine run and it was always warm and by the way the smell of diesel fuel, those were the days.

What do they do with their trains? Powered by American locomotive company products ( Alco Locomotives ) and in the past few years replaced with EMD locomotives to modernize the Indian Railroad system.

I love these old busses. Something about the sound of the engines remindcme of my childhood in the 70s. I would rather fix an old bus like this than to build one of the "off grid" vehicles everyone seems to be building now.

Love those 2 stroke Detroit diesels. Music to my ears. The largest Detroits I ran were the 12v71 and 8v92. The smallest Detroit I built a fire in was a 2-53 in a grader.

Man i got to hand it to you, your level of deduction and determination is unmatched. I mean that thing is an absolute relic from a time long ago and long forgotten. To see a guy preserve such a beast is not only rare but miraculous. The love for quality things of yesteryear has become obsolete and replaced with chrome plated plastic garbage. Jay Leno claims that if my memory is correct that the Rolls Royce airplane engines are what won WW2. I say he needs to give credit where credit is due. If it weren't for Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engines not only in military trucks, buses, marine vessels such as the landing craft used to transport soldiers to the aisle of Iwo Jima on D-Day. The Detroit 2-stroke engines were so reliable and adaptable. You could mount two Detroits end to end and literally double horsepower. You can also change the timing gears in the front of the engine and reverse the rotation. You would never see that with Cummins, Caterpillar, and Mack truck engines. God bless the Detroit.

This is the most beautiful style bus I've ever seen. Built in '47, the auto plants were just starting to make civilian vehicles again after making aircraft and tanks during the war.. So, the design of all these late 40's vehicles were really late 30's designs. That was the art deco period, when the most beautiful.. everythings were made. Truly terrific style bus, and I even love the color.

Nice old bus. Those 2 cycle Detroit's literally run forever. I ran a 6v92 for 24 years it never let me down. As far as I know it's still going. Two bits of advise, change the oil every 250 hours, and never lug the engine. They have very little oil pressure at low rpms so you have to keep it revved up. Remember they sound like they're screaming because it's a two stroke so the sound is an octave higher than it really is. Oh and never let it overheat that will kill it.

@@mikecarignan7002 They are called Screaming Detroits, but Gary is wrong about why. They don't run an octave higher. They run twice as many cycles as a 4 stroke. A 2 stroke Detroit at 2k rpms has as many combustion cycles as a 4 stroke at 4k rpms.

I was still very young when I traveled here in Brazil, some companies used this bus with these engines and at that time I fell in love with the sound of the engine, it is as if it breathed, as if a huge heart beat inside it ... exciting...

OMG! I can't believe my eyes! We once owned this bus. My dad had a 1948 3703 and my husband loved it so much that he wanted one. Dad's friend had this bus and ended up selling it to my husband. I think we bought it in the early 80's and sold it in the late 80's. My dad and his friend Charlie (the original owner) rebuilt the motor and put the exhaust pipe in. My husband gutted the inside and totally remodeled it. I reupholstered the seats and made the curtains. My husband had the hitch put on and we pulled a VW bug behind it when we traveled. We took a trip with my parents in their bus and us in ours and headed for Cape Hatteras. Coming home we nearly lost the (hydraulic) brakes in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They got so hot that they were smoking. We had to pull over to the side of the road and sit while they cooled down. Frightening experience to say the least. When we returned home, dad and Roger (my husband) put new maxi brakes on it. I had/have my CDL license and I drove it from Breezewood, Pa to Uniontown, Oh (where we lived) once we got out of the mountains pulling the VW bug and had the pedal to the medal. Dad stayed behind me the entire time and I topped 60 mph passing anything and everything to get back home. lol. When we owned it we had it painted to compliment my dad's bus. Both were painted dark blue with white but different pattern. They were beautiful. Dad's CB handle was Blue Dog 1 and we were Blue Dog 2. Please, please tell me where she is today and keep us updated on her restoration. So many memories. Can't believe she's still around and back on the road. Amazing! Brings tears to my eyes.

We once owned that bus. My husband and dad restored it. It originally belonged to one of my dad's friends. His name was Charlie. Charlie and dad rebuilt the engine. Dad had a 3703 1948. We vacationed one year at Cape Hatterhas. Dad pulled a VW bug behind his and we pulled a VW bug as well. I drove it home to Uniontown Oh from Breezewood PA with the pedal to the metal topping out at 65 mph. For the smaller engine she was a runner. I was amazed when my son called me one night in 2018 and told me he found our old bus. I've since made FB friends with the owners. Can't wait to see the final restore.

Heh heh, that first start was definitely ASMR for an old mechanic like me. Honestly, I didn't know that they put the 4-71's in the early buses. A lot of late 40's Greyhounds and Trailways buses had inline 6 cylinder 478 International gas engines. I've worked on a few of those and they were serious gas hogs (4-6 mpg tops), and probably didn't have near the torque of that 4-71 Detroit. I'm surprised how well the exhaust cleaned up after it ran for a while. I did hear 1 sticky injector when you first got it going but it seems to have cleared out by the time you got to your fuel stop. You might still want to adjust the rack a bit to get it to fire evenly on all 4 at idle.😉 That's going to be a neat restoration project! Nice work guys!😁👍

The Greyhound Scenicruisers original power plant was 2 4-71 engines each with its own manual clutch going into a common gearbox. When Detroit came out with the 8V71 series in 1957 Greyhound started replacing the dual engine setup with the 8V71. I spoke to a greyhound driver that drove them across the southwest and he had a few breakdowns with the twin engine setup and what he liked is after unclutching the failed engine he could finish the trip. A little slower with only one engine but far better than sitting by the side of the road in the desert. The air conditioner was run by a separate engine. When Greyhound replaced the twin engine setup with the 8V71 they eliminated the air conditioning engine and ran the AC off the main engine. Break down in the desert and it gets hot quickly. Cheers!

danw is that why they lope at idle.. mis-adjusted injectors ? I remember riding the old silver side greyhounds.. and they always had that lope at idle.. and I thought it was a governor problem.. or just how they were !

@@jamesshanks2614 could a live twin 4-71 powered scenicruiser be seen somewhere on the internet nowadays? or are they all gone ? I spent several hours searching but without success.
