Glad to see you finally got both buses home, Do yourself and buy a Remote starter button from Snap-On or MAC Tools both make really nice heavy duty ones that are worth there weight in gold in my personal opinion. I know it's a time honored practice to use a screwdriver(s) to jump starter solenoids but I have personally seen vehicles/engines damaged as well as people injured by doing it screwdrivers. Personally I think a block heater is an excellent investment, if you get coolant heater not only do they make starting 6-71's much easier to start when cold but they have the added bonus of warming the entire bus and building the bus is in as long as the building has a little bit of insulation but they will make the power meter spin a little bit faster because it is essential having an electric water heater running every minute they are plugged in. That said I had a friend who keep his Autocar Tow-Truck plugged in one winter in his shop while we were doing body-work/modifications on it in preparation for painting and after a few days of being plugged in it keep his shop that was 40'x50' above 70 degrees, which certainly beat the hell out of using torpedo heaters and a wood stove which at best would only heat the shop up to the low 60's mostly because the truck could stay plugged in 24/7 and the wood stove we would would not feed it any more fuel 2 hours before we were planning to knock off for the night so we could dump/clean the ashes out it because neither of us were comfortable leaving an unattended wood stove burning at night.

I have enjoyed watching your bus rescue videos. As I live in New Zealand I find it hard to understand the miles you had to travel to rescue this bus. Looking back at all the work and travel you did to finally get it home, would it have been easier and cheaper to put it on the back of a truck and just transport across the USA. I’m now looking forward to the restoration of these busses. I’ve never see one of these busses in NZ. Most of our busses came from Great Britain.

Huge sigh of relief all the way from Aus Sage. I am glad to see you didnt try to tape up the holes for the trip, it just doesnt work without Tek Screws and poly sheet, A few observations for you though. In the final Parking of the Silver Ghost you backed the old girl in like a Gas powered vehicle slipping the clutch at revs to control speed and keep her moving. Thats the opposite of what you do with an oil burner. Idle or slightly above and fully engage the clutch allowing the torque of the Diesel to do the work. Scary in reverse I know but you wont chew through clutches. The other observation is your relative experience with heavy vehicles and is perhaps a reflection on those who should know this stuff but the air system and especially older versions is always a weak point and what you had repaired after the Holland event was 100% predictable given the climate the bus came from, its age and unknown service condition. You will always get Moisture in an air system, you will also always get Oil in an air system of this age as thats the nature of old air compressors and so water and oil make Goo that will over time solidify and infest (Best word for it) your air system. That Canadian Guy kinda did the air hose thing as did you I believe but flushing lines clean is always a must because otherwise the crud accumulates where you least want it to accumulate. The old an Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure maxim comes in to play. Now I dont know IF or if not Why but you should have been given an essential punchlist relating to Bus Rescue so Id suggest that all the accumulated knowlege be collated and that You, Jason and "Those in the Know" should Write a book that contains all this hard earned and fought knowledge and self publish it. The reason why You and Jason should do it is because Jason obviously has more mechanical experience but you both struggled with issues that you probably realised could have been avoided. I know I sound a bit mean in my comments but its not meant in a mean spirited way, I made some monumental cock-ups in my late teens to mid 20's buying, repairing and restoring old Buses and later when I owned Trucks both big and small that knowledge saved me a lot of grief and expense knowing what, how and with what to restore and maintain the various oil burners in my life and I shared this throughout the time I sent training new drivers and keeping old drivers compliant. Write that book Guys, Grab a draft and get Tyler to contribute, get Phil to contribute (And anyone else at BusBoys), Add piccies coz Piccies sell books and give it a humorous name. Hell Id buy a copy! Cheers, Tony
