I had a complex 4x rook 9x pawns position today, this game and the commentary was really useful in understanding those positions. Really fun stuff. Those videos are hella good to learn chess
@Kamamura212 күн бұрын
I remember Lasker complaining being at a disadvantage in Havana's hot climate against Capablanca, so maybe the choice of location is more important in chess preparation that it would seem. ;-) I liked the reasoning behind the opening, especially Levy boldly sacrificing his somewhat rigid conviction that "bishops are better than knights" (they indeed have that potential as the position opens up, but there is plethora of examples of quite miserable bishops, French white squared bishop comes to mind, even bishop pairs), so that was great. The whole bishop maneuver felt quite fresh and inspired. Moreover, the g4 pawn intermezzo very much resembles Shirov's approach to various lines in Queen Gambit Declined - I remember him playing it with vigorous gusto, it was even a kind of fashion one time. Great game!

Trusting your instincts reminds me of what an old skeet shooting instructor told me when I was a kid. Even though shooting a shotgun is very much a reflex skill, when you're training you think about every step you are taking and do everything in slow motion. But when you are competing you forget everything and trust your instincts. If you have trained well your instincts will serve you well.

20:31 As crazy as it sounds, i think of countering g6 with Kf3. Basically, Kf3 lets white preserve the knight by taking back during the queen trade with the king, instead of the e pawn. The rook on c5 prevents any queen checks, and if black makes the mistake of prodding at your knight with e5? Rc8. If black retreats with Nf6 instead, Qg2 lets you counter attack with a threat to black’s b pawn, forcing white to respond. This gives white time to step the king back to e2.

Recommend Dvoretsky's endgame manual. In rook endgames it is almost always worth a pawn for an active rook rather than staying passive on equal material. Even if the passive position is a draw in theory, it's likely to slip eventually, while when rook is active it's your opponent that has to be precise
