Hey Levy, there are two main reasons why I watch you. First is the way you tie your sense of humor into the recaps to make them both informative and memorable. When I was a math tutor I did the same, and my students would often proudly show good exam grades to me and say that they were able to remember what to do because of something funny I said during our lesson. It's just something I appreciate about you and I find it relatable. Second is that I get to witness the emotional journey that must occur with every competitive chess player, but rarely anyone sees. Maybe it's just the para-social phenomenon at play here, but that process you described in this video about just choosing to follow your instincts and not second-guess yourself (while at the same time not being completely careless) really spoke to me. I often struggle with Imposter Syndrome when it comes to multiple aspects of life, so watching you over the years try, try, and keep trying to overcome your psychological challenges is inspiring. Whenever I'm worried about making a bad decision, I always think about how it must be infinitely more difficult for someone in your position, whose every decision, comment, joke, chess move, wardrobe choice, product, book, opening course, and even WIFE (only by the worst of them) will draw infinite scrutiny to the point of oblivion from those who are too cowardly to address their own insecurities and instead weaponize them toward successful people like yourself. I don't know if you'll see this but it made me feel better writing it, and I suspect you've come to understand most or all of this already anyway. Good luck to you in the rest of the tournament and take care.

Chessly - Been using it to prepare for each round of my local club's OTB championship. Round 1 played e6b6 (win), Round 2 played Vienna (win), Round 3 was trying to play Vienna, opponent went into Sicilian, ended up going into Smith-Morra which I had not prepared (draw), and I'm preparing e6b6 for the final round against an opponent that likes the London. There is a three-way tie for first going into the round.

I could get Levy to GM before the year is out... with a just a touch of Zen. This marks the umpteenth time Levy has spoken of self-doubt, stress, and overthinking as sheer consequences of existing. As much as I want to see Levy reach grandmaster the statement "I can't wait for this tournament to be over so I can get back to work on Chessly" is why he's not going to become a grandmaster. In order to become something as difficult as a grandmaster you have to dedicate all of your time to that goal and it has to be the thing you're most passionate about. Levy's clearly more passionate about other things in the chess world, which is obviously fine.

Good to see some confidence coming back. I am pushing 40 and dont have much time to devote to chess although I do really enjoy the game. I recently took a break from chess for a few months at around 1000 ELO and did some studying of the game (Chessly 2.0 is great btw). Since I started playing rapid again recently, I have regularly played with a rating of 1800+, and won 10 rapid games in a row, even though my ELO is now only at 1150ish (again, I don't play often). I thought maybe things were starting to click and was happy with my performance, so I played some blitz and got completely destroyed because I am always winning and then make horrific blunders. I even played one blitz game with 400 rating. It is frustrating to feel great about yourself one moment and then be brought back down to earth in such a way, knowing that you are better than how you are playing, but you just have to put it behind you, learn from it, and continue working to improve.

In those cases and perhaps in this it's a matter of mental determination. Every game is a new one and memories of the others has to be wiped away. Perhaps working with a sports psychologist would help mental focus. I'm really looking forward to the day that he gets his grandmaster's title.

from may 2016 as a 20 yo and to December 16, going from 2254 to 2404 at rocket pace Levy just around his 21st birthday passed the 2400 mark, in august 2018 he peaked at 2421, later same month he opened this KZbin channel and as soon as October his rating was down to 2387, then in April ‘19 2367, august 2352, November 2343 at which it remained until June ‘21 when after a short resurgence up to 2362 in October it was back onto 2334-2333 feb through July ‘22 before hitting 2322 in august idling there until June ‘24, then up and down 2348, 2370, 2347 and now 2353 while Levy turned 29 in December…. in the same intermediate period gothamchess has steadily increased to now 5.8million subs - numbers quite clearly show how Levy deliberately chose not to take the chance on going for the GM title back when it could’ve happened

a direct correlation between streaming and stalling
@FenceThis56 минут бұрын
ok, so ‘someone’ deleted my first comment, but to recap: July to December 2016 Levy rocketed from 2254 to 2404, passing the 2400 mark right around his 21st birthday, then peaking at 2421 in august ‘18 same month as he opened the gothamchess channel from whence rating soon started plummeting, spending most of the intermediate 6 1/2 years at 80-100 points below his max at 22 yo while streaming views and subs went up at same pace as his chess rating back when he was 20, meanwhile now at 29 years of age stalled at ca 150 points from the magic 2500 which is only one of the requirements in order to achieve the GM title. Numbers strongly indicate that Levy chose streaming over GM title or prove me wrong: it’s only 150 points just like back in ‘16 !

I forvever dread and weep, thinking of the day you will one day retire. I would sacrifice my own life it were the only thing that could put a smile on your beautiful face. You have given me so much joy, and heartbreak over the years. I remember when you first left me and its like my heart got broken into a million pieces. But a tear still fell from my right eye when I watched you win your first match in road to GM, because deep down, my glorious king deserved it. I just wanted you to return home. Then allas, you did, my sweet baby boy came home and I rejoiced. I was crying, bawling even, and I heard my glorious king exclaim these words, "GOTHAM, THIS IS FOR YOU!" Not only have you changed the game of Chess and the world forever, but you've eternally changed my world. And now you're getting older, but still the goat, my goat. Amazing game Levy, absolutely inspiring how you can completely change your mindset in a bad tournament and get a great position against a grandmaster after playing really fast. All the best on your journey!
