It's his hesitancy against GM that is holding him back, over thinking it instead of just going for an attack.
@Adam-jl6cs
@Adam-jl6cs 11 ай бұрын
I'd say you're correct, but I believe it's more fundamental than that. I believe it's more that, when Levy, or anyone really, is in a competitive environment that has some kind of value to them, the nerves kick in. That hesitancy is a product of this environment because there is a perceived value to a particular match compared to other matches. In other words, of course he's going to overthink. To put it in perspective, think of it like you're playing a football match and you're going against Ronaldo.
@bravosix2960
@bravosix2960 11 ай бұрын
@@Adam-jl6csIsn’t that kinda what Hikaru said? Those things are def a big thing, if he goes against a GM he tries to survive rather than win. Or something like that. Both points are valid and probably combine together.
@Adam-jl6cs
@Adam-jl6cs 11 ай бұрын
@bravosix2960 I have no idea what Hikaru has said. All I stated is that, while correct, the OC's comment doesn't state enough. It is far too narrow a statement, and that's what I was pointing out. Drawing from personal experience, I participate in a competitive sport, of which there are tournaments at various levels to compete. You would expect that this is where you would find some of the best performances of the sport. However, that's not always the case. There are plenty of instances where, simply because it's a tournament, combatants just aren't able to get over the nerves. Any number of things can instigate that feeling of pressure, whether it's a change of venue, personal expectations, tournament level, or other factors. Doesn't need to be a lot, just enough to make you start 2nd guessing yourself. I've gone through it, and I know dozens more that have as well. That's why, typically, at least, you'll find the best performances at practice. Why? There's no stakes, nerves, distractions, or other things. There's no pressure. The reason I took issue with the OC's statement is because, while it's easy to point out from the passenger seat, it's another thing to get inside the nuance of it. It's not fair to sum it up as simple hesitancy because it's more than just hesitating. It's dealing with, and overcoming, that pressure, and that's not easy to do, especially at THAT level. So, with that in mind, please don't try and group mine and OC's statements like that. Why? Because OP insinuates that this is a simple thing to deal with, and I can attest that it is anything but simple.

Levy could be a GM if he trained with Hikaru for 2 years on defensive fundamentals and utilizing the kings Indian and the catalan. He's trying to solve every position, rather than doing what Hikaru does, which is just constantly present dilemmas that force his opponents to calculate more than him.
@FrancescoFerraris
@FrancescoFerraris 11 ай бұрын
Problem is 1 - Hikaru simply WON'T spend two years of his life training Levy (not out of spite or whatever, it's just a cost/benefits equation) 2 - At the same time, Levy can't afford to properly train for two years. His internet persona is a small-medium sized company when it comes to net gross and expenses. He HAS to keep streaming, doing GTE, and all the stuff he does in order to maintain his operation profitable. He just can't afford to study chess 6+ hours a day.
@katrinaxharhus3747
@katrinaxharhus3747 11 ай бұрын
@@FrancescoFerraris tbf he already spends a huge chunk of his day analyzing high level chess so depending on how he directs some of his effort and content, he is already living and breathing chess all day so it wouldnt necessarily be 6 additional hours a day-- maybe 3. When he's teaching openings he's learning them too. If he was creating non chess related content and not doing lessons and such properly elsewhere and studying for that it'd be a bit different. I could see him becoming a grandmaster within the next few years.

the only way to achieve a difficult goal, is to believe you can do it. It is possible that you may believe you can do it, and still fail to achieve it. But If you do not believe you can do it, it is impossible that you will ever succeed.
